I think we go very close there with a clear run for Festive Cheer. Still returned 33/1 so a nice return nonetheless. Very strange race though with the 2 big guns very disappointing.

Pretty Polly Stakes – Princess Highway £200 win @ 5/1 Hills

Connections of the favourite have tried to keep this horse away from quick ground, which is what she will get tomorrow so I think she is worth taking on. There is no doubt she could be top class but she does have to step up on what she has shown so far and with doubts about the ground I would rather go with something with proven form already in the book. For me it was a toss up between Was and Princess Highway and I Just prefer the claims of the Weld runner.

I think for this horse the ground is very much in favour as all of her best form has come on better ground. She absolutely bolted up in the Ribblesdale last year, beating some good horses in the process. She hasn’t repeated that since but I don’t think she has had her optimum conditions. Tomorrow she gets good ground and comes into the race on the back of a respectable return to action. That should have put her spot on for this race and with the blinkers on for the first time, she could be tough to beat. This is a race that in recent years has gone to something in the first 3 in the betting and I don’t see it being any different tomorrow.

Well done today Whorse. You summarise your thoughts really well and more importantly the results are pretty decent!

    Good luck – OD.

Couldn’t have got it more wrong today. Princess Highway was very disappointing. I don’t think this was her true running but she never looked like threatening. I would never have picked the winner and I wasn’t surprised to see the favourite come out. Looking back at the results, it looked an extremely tough day to find winners at the Curragh.

    3.30 Pontefract – Bollin Greta £60.94 win @ 14/1 Bet365

Only a small interest in this race but it looks an intriguing little contest. The Stoute horse may well be the best horse in the race but she looked a little flat footed at Goodwood when the pace lifted and she could find the same happening today with only 4 runners. I do like Huffoof who could get an easy lead in the race, which would surely see her go very close but she is up 7lbs for her latest win in a better race. The one I am going to take a chance on is the Tim Easterby trained Bollin Greta. She stays further than this and she is now 10lbs lower than her last winning mark which came this time last year at York. She didn’t run much of a race last time out but the jockey gave her a very tender ride. Duran Fentiman takes over today and she is a previous CD winner. It wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to see her go close but she does have plenty to prove against these younger rivals.

    4.00 Pontefract – Fanrouge £150 win @ 5/1 Hills

This is what happens when I am off work at home bored… Wasting money on the mid weeks tripe. Fanrouge didn’t run so well last time out at Leicester but he was slowly away that day. He won well at Warwick a couple of outings ago, beating Rivas Rhapsody in the process. He is 2lbs worse off with that rival today but I fancy him to uphold the form. This could turn into a muddling affair, which wouldn’t suit a few of his opposition. Fanrouge is drawn in 2 and has Daniel Tudhope on board who is one of the top jockeys at the track. Stable continue in decent enough form and I would give Fanrouge another chance today in what looks a very open race.

    8.30 Windsor – Strategic Action £25 EW @ 25/1 Bet365

I don’t really think this horse should be such a big price. He is clearly in good form at the moment with his only recent disappointing run coming over an inadequate trip at Birghton. This is as far as he wants to go but he comes here on the back of two good efforts. He was only just caught on the line at Lingfield by Pink Lips who has since gone very close to following up. He then looked unlucky at Kempton as he got squeezed for room at a vital stage in the race and could have challenged for the win had that not happened. He does have one win on turf and a further couple of placed efforts from 8 runs. I just don’t think he should be such a big price so I think he is worth an each way play at the odds.

    9.15 Ffos Las – Nafa £100 win @ 5/1 Bet365

Bad habits rearing their ugly head again… chasing losses that is. There looks to be plenty of pace in this race, which should this strong travelling type. She is on a role with 4 wins from her last 5 runs but switches to turf here. If she can translate her all weather form to the turf then she should go well.

A lucky boy indeed as Nafa bolts up at 6/1….

Thoughts turn to the Eclipse and the John Smith Cup.

Right now I am leaning towards Mars in the Eclipse. Back over a more suitable trip I feel this horse could be a big player. He had valid excuses in the Derby but still managed to finish a close up 6th. There should be much more to come from him.

For the John Smith Cup I am hoping we get some rain as that will really enhance the chances of my fancy Educate. He had no chance whatsoever in the Hunt Cup but has proven himself to be a very talented horse already this season. He goes on any ground but I feel his chances would be improved if the ground comes up soft. He proved himself over the trip when winning very easily at Lingfield, beating the talented Sheikhzayedroad in the process. I don’t really see any point in backing either of them now as I can’t see the price differing that much closer to their respective races.

    3.45 Brighton – Lady Barastar £100 EW @ 7/1 PaddyPower

I backed Young Jackie last time out when it got the better of my selection by a nose at Lingfield. I fancy she might be able to turn the tables with that one back on turf. She is yet to win in turf but has several places efforts. George Baker takes the ride in a race full of inexperienced jockeys and he could make the difference. Sorry for shabby write up but I’m on my phone.

    8.10 Stratford – Prospect Wells £240 win @ 15/8 PaddyPower

I’ve had my returns from earlier on this horse who I think has a cracking chance. He had to wait for his 2nd start over fences before getting off the mark but he did it nicely. He got the better of Awaywiththegreys that day and I expect him to uphold the form with that one. The Bowen yard were in a real purple patch at the time so it was probably a very nice effort. The main danger tonight looks to be Bold Chief. Paul Nicholls however is in fine form at the moment and does have an excellent record at the track so he will do for me.

Slightly frustrating as I was extremely close to backing Seal of Approval rather than Ruscello. Both the Racing Post and Attheraces had him priced up much shorter so the drift did put me off. Also frustrating over in Ireland as Sharjah is a horse I backed recently and he just got the better of my selection in that race. I think Net Whizz is a layers dream.
