I cant put my finger on what went wrong today for

    Boston Bob

,other than jockey error.Paul Townend rode a respectful race sitting contently on the rail, for some strange reason he drops him out the back halfway round and steers a more central/wide route,What was wrong with continuing to track the eventual winner?? ‘Boston’ jumped relatively cleanly without making any significant error and was flexible enough to be placed just where Paul wanted him at any given time, that tells me he had plenty horse under him.As the field approached the final bend,’Boston’ was still nearer last than first but for some strange reason his jockey takes the widest route of all and sweeps past the whole field to lead approaching the 2nd last.As soon as ‘Boston’ hits the front he starts hanging into the rail and almost curls up under a strong whip frenzy from his jockey, its clear as day the horse hangs against the whip being used in Pauls right hand thus encouraging his mount further into the rail itself, the horse completely loses its stride and thereby blunders so badly at the last he inevitably falls. What is clearer than day is ‘Boston Bob’ does not want to hit the front so soon,he needs hanging onto and the later he’s delivered the better as he has a telling turn of foot!

Why on earth the Sporting Life race reporter says he took a TIRED FALL is complete tosh!

.That guy wants to offer me 25/1 about him winning next years Gold cup to £100 e/w! He is a proper Gold cup horse this, not a Ryanair type…..Tommy!
Anyone who dares to dissagree with my appraisal of the RSA need not respond to this post by the way!!

Well you all know the jumps isn’t really my game but what racing fan can’t get excited about Cheltenham? My problem with the jumps is that it is SO geared towards that 4 days in March that everything else is essentially a trial for that meeting. But that’s another argument for another day. Having watched, read and learned from the experts on this thread here are my thoughts on a couple of the races:

    The Gold Cup

I can’t be having the Irish horses. There doesn’t seem an awful lot between them and a line through Kauto Stone plus the Hennessey result would suggest they have something to find on the leading British contenders. I appreciate that Cheltenham is SDC’s course and Gord’s confidence is quite contagious but I will leave him out.

Long Run has done little wrong really lets be honest. He seems as good as ever this year and his King George win was epic but, strangely enough for a GC winner, he still has something to prove – to me at least. His jumping is not good enough for a horse at the highest level and he was firmly put in his place earlier in the season by Silvi C.

Bob’s Worth is very short for one so inexperienced and I would be worried about his recent problems. It is getting close to Cheletenham to be having these little niggly concerns.

There are three I like –

    Silvi C

    – has been brilliant this season and just keeps on improving. Considering PN was at pains to point out he would need Saturday’s run AND that better ground would suit, I thought he was fantastic. It is also telling that PN has now decided to run TB in the World Hurdle – a decision seemingly influenced by what happened on Saturday. My only worry, and it is admittedly a big one, how will he handle Cheltenham? He has only ran there once and was beaten convincingly. However he is a different class of animal these days and I think PN and RW know they have something special on their hands.

At bigger prices I have an interest in

    The Giant Bolster

    and

    Imperial Commander

. TGB showed his well being at the weekend and we all know he is a much better horse at Cheltenham. He beat Long Run fair and square last year and yet is a much bigger price. A good ew bet imo. IC is a legend in my book and, whilst his age is against him, he is still lightly raced. NTW was delighted with that comeback run as he had left plenty to work on and I can see him having the class to run a huge race.

    The Champion Hurdle

So I have backed the fav

    Hurricane Fly

as I don’t think he was right last year and looks a different horse this. I see him coming there swinging at the last and having too much class for the rest. I will admit that someone much cleverer than me has advised an ew on

    Countrywide Flame

who loves the track and will be suited by the stronger pace of the CH.

    The World Hurdle

Hoping the ground stays tacky as I am on

    Reve De Sivola

. What’s not to like about this horse. Tough, genuine over hurdles and goes well at the track. Hoping Henderson sends Oscar Whisky elsewhere but even if he doesn’t and the ground dries out, I still think my one will be a tough nut to crack. My worry would be Monksland.

    The Neptune

When NTW says that The New One could be the best he has trained then that is good enough for me. The ground got him beat last time out and he wsa probably up against a decent one (hey Gord?!) so I hope it dries out a bit for him. If it does he will be hard to beat. The Irish horse is a huge danger obviously as is that Melodic Rendevous who keeps on improving but nobody knows which race he will be aimed at.

I have followed Gord in on

    Quantativeasing

if only because it took me an hour to work out he was talking about this one after the last Cheltenham meeting and they have clearly been getting his handicap mark down.

    That’s all for now!!

So far so good. Not bad for a flat man. The New One was awesome today!! He has some engine no Gord?!!!

‘The New One’ was awesome today!! He has some engine no Gord?!!!

He was visually impressive Joni but I dont rate him as a long term propositon, certainly wont make a chaser. As bad a ride Paul Townend gave ‘Boston Bob’,Ruby Walsh gave ‘Pont Alexandre’ a worse one.Every man and his Dog knew this horse needed an end to end gallop over 21/2m and he was supposed to be able to do just that! Instead he serves up a crawl,so much so every horse was still on the bridle jumping 2 out and in effect the whole race turned into a 2 furlong sprint that was tailor-made for a little horse like ‘The New One’ who according to his trainer has speed to burn.It beggars belief that Ruby could set fractions that would equate to last years winner ‘Simonsig’ winning this years race by a distance.A good ‘Neptune is run in sub 5mins,this years took 16 seconds longer to run.Todays Champion Chase was run in a time suggesting the ground doesn’t have that much soft in it and that only concurs with the crawl set by Ruby.Almost a year ago

    My Tent or Yours

    gave 6lb to

    The New One

at Aintree,I decided then the former was the better ‘Supreme’ prospect, now they are both 10/1 for next years Champion hurdle and I know who has the more scope for improvement but I have certainly seen enough to know that ‘The New One’ is the horse to beat.I hope they both go down that route.

Its without doubt my biggest day of the year tomorrow regarding my Ante-Post wagers for the Festival.I hadn’t backed a winner at this point last year but with ‘Sir des Champs’ at 12/1, and ‘Sunnyhill Boy’ at 16/1 both winning it started to turn things around.Things kick off with

    Captain Conan

,I’ve had 10’s on the machine and 5/1 on the High st and yet he still trades at around 6/1,an unbelievable price.I expect an impressive victory!

    Shutthefrontdoor

has the right profile for the Pertemps and I’m expecting a place.

    First Lieutenant

can single handedly return a 4 figure victory at 14’s down and I honestly think he’s a Certainty.I will be speechless if he gets beat fair and square….Unless of course its by ‘Albertas Run’!

    Get Me Out Of Here

more than any horse deserves a Festival victory to his name and I’m staying loyal at 20/1,e/w of course, his big dangers his old enemy ‘Oscar Whiskey’!

    Hunt Ball

will take some stopping tomorrow but with ‘Cantlow’ and ‘Calg’ in it should ensure it being a great race.
    Another banker for me is

    Alfie Sherrin

,I’ve had more than enough on this fellow at 20/1 but again I expect a victory,I actually wont be happy with just a place from this fellow as like I said a year ago about ‘Sunnyhill Boy’ I’m expecting a victory in this and then a victory in the Grand National and my 40/1 shot from last year couldn’t have gone any closer,’Alfie’ was incidentally ‘Royal Athletes’ pet name and he won me a National at 66/1.coincidence or what?

Good luck with The Captain Gord, think you might need it as Charlie skips past him up the hill :D

No luck needed regards The Lieutenant, on at 10’s and it’s my nap of the week, he’ll hose up.

    Have a good day.

Laugh at me playing the old Loyalty card but I’ve just taken 40/1 with Skybet to 5 places about

    Calgary Bay

,he’s available at 50/1 to 4 places but I’ll take the extra place as he’ll have run a blinder to get there! 100’s on the machine has had a whole £6 of mine too!

    Calgary Bay

    £50 e/w 40/1 skybet 5 places ‘Byrne’.

Nath its all about the prices mate,I’ve beaten the SP 99.9% of the time with my horses thus far and because I preach e/w betting Ante-Post I’m rewarded with place money too.I’ve hit the post a couple of times for big bucks,’MTOY’ and ‘Boston Bob’ but that will change today with my Army! Confidence is King!

No problems at all Gary but you have to keep checking your accounts constantly to ensure monies are going in! Good luck today yourself!

A fantastic Jewson that changed dramatically as three jumped the last together but clear as day both my ‘Captain Conan’ and the over-rated ‘Dynaste’ failed to get home! Back to 2 miles for my fellow, back to the drawing board for ‘Dynaste’! Both touched 1/2 in running but were out stayed by a decent animal.

Also gord as well i know you like Jonjo horses what chance you give
HOLLYWELL in Pertemps am on at 16/1 myself.

I’d give him a solid chance of finishing 2nd to his stable mate

    Shutthefrontdoor

.Still relatively unexposed and worth a bet at 16/1 Darren.

Get in there Darren,Well done! 25/1 was a helluva price!Jonjo 1st and 4th,no complaints mate.

    First Lieutenant

looked positively one paced today against a far speedier sort in ‘Cue Card’,the winner won that easily and I’m afraid ‘The Lieutenant’ never really looked like winning even though he traded shorter than 1/2 in running.Place money yet again but thats down to having the foresight of snaffling the big prices.A real anti-climax of a race for me.particularly with

    Albertas Run

    being pulled up!

Well what can I say about

    Celestial Halo

eh ‘Fist’? he ran the race of his life in the ‘World hurdle’,he too traded odds-on in running from an opening show of 100’s,I managed to get 16’s in running as I knew very early on he was up for it,trouble was I kept thinking shall I shant I,loyalty won the day but I still lost! Thankfully Ladbrokes declining my ‘Oscar Whiskey’ bet helped but another one of mine just didn’t get home in

    Get me out of here

.Time to unleash my ‘Secret Weapon’!!
