the Arkle Chase is a well known route to the Gold Cup.
It’s a route, but it’s been a losing route.
KK and WoA both lost in it before going on to win the Gold Cup.
Maybe the soft ground will be enough to slow things down and make it a stamina race.
If not, I reckon MWDS is in the wrong race.
(I would have put him in the Ryanair)

It may be worth pointing out that MWDS was allowed to sit behind Fair Along for most of the 2m in the Henry V111, thus passing the advantage to the speedier horse.
It wasn’t a mistake he repeated in his subsequent races, even though over further and on heavier ground, where he made all and never looked like being headed both times.
Given that the trainer has favoured the Champion Chase all season, I would expect MWDZ to serve it up to Fair Along from the start, and I cannot see the latter lasting home in such circumstances.
Could be wrong, but FA seems far from the banker that many hold him to be?
March 12, 2007 at 09:32 #44891Could set the race up nicely for something.

I just cannot see MWDS have the toe or jumping speed to match fair along in the first four furlongs. He goes off like a train. Then RJ will give him a breather down the back straight before kicking on again around the turn and nothing will come within 4 lengths until the straight when 2 or 3 will emerge like a calvery charge.
I think MWDS will stay on for a place. But just not sure he is quick enough over 2 miles.
Personally I hope Fair Along holds on…
March 12, 2007 at 11:04 #44893Dickie Johnson is one of the best judges of pace around and to be honest I can’t see anything getting near him until they jump the last.. It’ll be a case of whether johnson saves enough. My way won’t win this… Hasn’t got the toe to win a 2 mile chase in this class.
March 12, 2007 at 23:39 #44894I agree with the general opinion that fair along will lead them a merry dance. Quick accurate jumper, acts in all grounds and proven form with horses like my way and detroit city.
I can’t understand why everyone is jumping on the my way de solzen bandwaggon just because of soft ground. Did no one else notice it was soft at Sandown when Fair Along hacked in by 10l?
I was pleased with getting my money on a few days ago at 100/30 n/r no bet but now im surprised it’s 7/2 in places.
March 13, 2007 at 06:20 #44895I’ve been running the race in my head, I’m not even sure Fair Along will make the running. He will if they don’t go mad but there are some quick horses in this race I think Richard Johnson might just sit in behind the leaders (s) and kick off the top bend. I actually think it’ll suit Fair Along when he quickens I expect him to quicken clear and I don’t expect him for a second to stop up the hill.

March 13, 2007 at 06:48 #44896I still think Lennon will front run, though sadly for me probably for only a mile until the horse throws the towel in.
March 14, 2007 at 00:02 #1114I thought he deserved his own thread after that performance. A seriously classy display over a trip that is short of his optimum. Well done to cormack who remained so bullish, I hope you made plenty.
March 14, 2007 at 00:18 #45866Thought for some time this is the next star in the making. He ouzes class and was always likely to make an even better chaser than hurdler
Beautiful jump at the last too

You could be right. I just thought he was sweating. Seriously, the horses talent has never been in doubt, I just didn’t believe he could do it at that trip, on that ground and at the pace they went. It was a pretty awesome performance, probably on a par with what Azertyiop, Well Chief and Moscow put up when winning the same race. Wouldn’t it be nice to think he could be as good as them.
March 14, 2007 at 00:25 #45868The time was faster than both Azerty and WC and only marginally (0.67 secs) slower than MF so looks good alright.
March 14, 2007 at 00:25 #45869To be able to win an Arkle following a World Hurdle is very impressive. Fair Along’s ride does give me a concern to the literal form, but I think MWDS would have pulled out more anyway if he’d got to him. Although I couldn’t have MWDS on my mind for the Champion Chase next year.
I considered the horse a soft ground only performer, so to put in two successive wins at the Festival blows that away! Would love to see him step up in trip to 3m next year. A great jumper and likely to stay at least that distance, and in the hands of someone who won’t overface him but won’t hide him away! Great stuff!!!
March 14, 2007 at 00:26 #45870I would say now…that i think he is
Certainly A King wouldnt disagree….
A real stamp of class (Kauto…dessie…and probably Moscow if he had been tried at 3m) is that ability over a variety of distances.. Has the lot for me
i was suprised at how easy he found it to lie up with the others too.. expected him to come from further back

Hadn’t spotted the time was that quick David.
Blimey!
As mentioned to me by another astute forumite. The ground might not be that soft then….
March 14, 2007 at 00:31 #45872Thats remarkable about the time because (i havent checked) surely those races were run on a lot faster ground
Thing is…he could have found more too
March 14, 2007 at 00:39 #45873The ground was closer to good than good to soft judging by todays times. Without any rainfall/irrigation, ground could well be as quick as last year by Friday.
