I’ve said before that Kelso is the best course I’ve been to , Cheltenham is the Mecca in my eyes and I will go for one of the minor meetings one day soon , while the buzz of Gold cup day would be an experience the crowds would be all to much for me , I like to sit in peace , racing post and oj to hand relaxing …..not an easy thing to do nowadays

It was OK at Doncaster yesterday but at £29 (£26 plus a £3 ‘fulfilment fee’) I thought it was a bit overpriced for a card that featured a Group 3 and a Listed race.

All races bar the last were on the straight course, which was just as well because all the marquees and the funfair in the middle of the course obscured the view of the far side. Not convinced that will be good for the St Leger!

On entry, there were police officers with sniffer dogs. I cannot remember if I have ever seen that at a racecourse before. A sign that Doncaster has a problem with the white powder brigade?

All major meetings have problems with the CUPBW brigade, CAS.

It’s good to see Doncaster taking action to prevent drug use on course; now they need to refuse entry to anyone dressed like the Shelby brothers.

The beers on offer in the pub in the station looked a bit uninspiring, so I gave that a miss. But pleased to say the Hallcross and The Leopard were both in good form.

It is nice of the Leopard’s staff to actually ask if you have a CAMRA card. It is a bit frustrating when pubs do a discount but do nothing to advertise it or do not make it very clear.

Handy to know that- thanks, CAS! :good:

I’ve said it before, but when did that ever stop me saying it again?

During my early 20s gut bucket phase, Printing Office Street played host to a kebab house so acceptable I consumed FOUR large ones one Leger meeting lunchtime circa the mid 1980s.

Admittedly, this was the better part of 40 years ago, but it’s surely worth a visit, if only to see if the English Heritage blue plaque to “Four Kebab Chezza” is still in situ.

I’m currently in the Brewery Tap, which is opposite Printing Office Street, so I’ll check for it later, Chezza.

CAS- don’t know if you have visited but the Brewery Tap’s beers are outstanding; well worth popping in next time you’re in Donny.

Great stuff, Gladders, if it’s still there I’ll be faintly amazed tbh.

    Have a great day!

Thanks Glad. I did think about visiting but ran out of time. Will certainly go next time. I am planning on going to a jumps meeting some time this winter.

They’ve got the local Unplugged group playing at the moment. Live music and great beer- I was due some luck after the racing was called off!

I do hope Gladders had time to check out Printing Office Street for itinerant kebab houses – if he cba I may have to wait until next year’s Leger meeting to ask again!

    I’m actually going racing today.

56 declared runners, seven races, a respectable average of eight a race if they all go, only a tenner admission access all areas, free car park and also effectively free admission if you’ve used Rewards4Racing points.

£15 fuel to get there and back is a pain, but you can’t have everything, and they do a very acceptable chicken tikka wrap at Cobham Services Food Hall on the way home.

And after all, it is beautiful Epsom Downs, arguably one of the greatest and definitely one of the most historic, racecourses in the world.

Epsom is only twenty minutes from me by train. Would have gone today, but some friends have invited me over for lunch.

And not a Class 5 or 6 in sight.
Have a great day Ian on this sunny Sunday morning.

“Epsom is only twenty minutes from me by train. Would have gone today, but some friends have invited me over for lunch.”

Fortuitously, Gladders, I don’t have any friends so I was never likely to be diverted thus.

Thank you, GSP, I am stood at the 2f pole, having just strolled down to Tattenham Corner and it’s a glorious sunny morning and even the car park grass walks like a carpet.
