Sums up the meeting for Mullins/Townend as Barcardys hits the deck
December 28, 2017 at 15:44 #1334533Saying that SJ finished distressed but nothing specific mentioned
December 28, 2017 at 15:44 #1334534For a race regarded as the best of the festive season in some places, it turned out to be a load of old welly in the end.
For starters Sizing John was a ridiculous price. Having decided 7/4 was too short for me to take, I couldn’t believe the odds the lemmings were willing to take.
If Sizing John was not scared after watching the King George, then it has to be assumed that Might Bite is laughing out of his anus after seeing that lot today.
Yorkhill gave it go for a while but surely ruled himself out of THE Gold Cup with today’s showing. Djakadam went out like a light and has questions to answer now.
Sizing John never seemed to travel comfortably today and it was soon abundantly clear he was not going to win at all, never mind have the walk in the park the odds suggested was expected by most punters.
Hard to believe that TWO 66/1 shots finished ahead of the odds-on favourite and the second favourite here and anyone wanting to take 4/1 Sizing John for the Gold Cup after today’s effort surely needs psychiatric help. He’s 8/1 elsewhere. Wouldn’t it be more sense to take the Henderson horse at 5/1? The unexposed chaser has just landed the King George and he’s running up a sequence of wins at a stage where others are falling by the wayside.
Who would you back to save your life were it truly on the line?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 28, 2017 at 15:56 #1334536SJ was obviously not right, so how you can criticise that performance I don’t know…

The horse finished distressed, Steve. Unless you in your magic wisdom can foresee such things, can’t see how you can criticise the “lemmings willing to take the odds”. Indeed you youself rightly imo criticise the form of today’s race… But that in turn means Sizing John could’ve won by being nowhere near his best – which strongly suggests he was value even at a shade of odds-on, let alone those who took 7/4, 6/4 or Evens.
EDIT:
OMG, I see from an earlier post you made Yorkhill the “lay” and your bet was a forecast Sizing John and Djakadam.Strange for someone who thought Sizing John a “ridiculous price”.
Value Is EverythingDecember 28, 2017 at 17:17 #1334550Putting together the distances in both the KG + the Christmas Chase, they are all in a bit of a heap; perhaps we’ll have really big field in this years GC, plenty of contenders who only need to find a few lengths
December 28, 2017 at 17:30 #1334552GET IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shame the 66/1 shot done me out of the forecast but am happy with the winner and the third.IMO Might Bite should be a lot shorter for Cheltenham now than 7/2 ish !!
Road To respect is looking progressive but 10/1 against the mighty MB is no bargain!!
SJ ran too bad to be true but to get him back fro Cheltenham will take some doing.
IMO Might Bite at 7/2 is a steal and as I am already on for the KG GC double and have backed him at 6/1 and 7/1 I am undecided as to backing him again at 7/2 but I still think his price is huge!!
December 28, 2017 at 18:01 #1334557I was unaware of Sizing John having a problem when I wrote my post. Obviously that fact changes things.
Coming into the race I expected Sizing John to be the most likely winner. He was not a backable price for a single for me though, so I just decided on a small forecast. Sizing John was not the silly price he ended up at when I placed my forecast bet. If anyone wants to live their lives thinking losers were value then that’s up to them but I just move on from races and accept that bad things sometimes happen.
My forecast picks both ran stinkers but I correctly identified Yorkhill as the bad value. I also said just the other day that Might Bite was a canny price at 6/1 for the Gold Cup. No doubt if he goes and wins it it will be a fluke on my part.
Some very poor losers on this forum.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 28, 2017 at 18:10 #1334565Some terrible, terrible winners too.
December 28, 2017 at 18:32 #1334570Well done, Raymo and Ginger
Sizing John overheated . . . Sizzling John
December 28, 2017 at 18:34 #1334571Gutted about yorkhill, I honestly thought he would stay better then that.
I really fancied him for the gold cup. But looks like my tickets are in bin already.
Only glimmer of hope is they give him another chance as the yard have had a torrid x mas period compared to previous years. Sizing john & DJAKADAM also ran very flat.
Well done whoever picked the winner
December 28, 2017 at 19:04 #1334575Thanks Joe, but tbh when the fav would’ve won it pretty easily had he shown anything like his form – finishing distressed – hasn’t quite the right feel. Hope SJ is ok.
Value Is EverythingDecember 28, 2017 at 19:27 #1334579Well done Raymo, a winner is a winner but it seems some feel that anything other than the favourite winning is a fluke.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

When you are punting professionally you have every right to feel good about getting the winner. You had the vision to pick the horse that few had considered. It’s always worth a pat on the back for yourself for putting the work in and wagering a good priced winner.
Thinking beyond the obvious and covering yourself is what ultimately keeps you in front and I have never failed to acknowledge that you are winning overall, despite our many spats.
If it makes you feel guilty winning when Sizing John ran below form, you can send me the money instead.
Well done.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 28, 2017 at 20:15 #1334584Sizing John is better than he showed as is Might Bite as is Bristol De Mai … been an odd festive season results-wise
December 28, 2017 at 20:40 #1334588I was just thinking the same.
I wonder if there is a little bug doing the rounds?
December 28, 2017 at 23:52 #1334612Gosh steve, what aload of nonsense, your posts can sometimes be constructive but goodness, do you dislike NH that much that everything is garbage, every horse is over rated, one bad race and there dogs, every grade 1 ran is “old welly”
Sizing john was not a rediculous price at 7/4, considering the second fav had never ran the distance and the 3rd fav he had hammered 4 times in a row,
Lemmings for taking 7/4 lol go back and wath reruns of the derby and enlighten us how that was tosh, id much rather read that, than read that utter garbage
If you were unable to see that SJ was never comfortable, maybe stick to the NFL
