I am on ante-post on One For Arthur, The Last Samuri and Vieux Lion Rouge. I felt all three would start a good bit shorter come the day of the race.
I felt the ground might have gone against One For Arthur and I wasn’t confident but I’ll take that one.
The Last Samuri was my biggest disappointment, that was well below what he is capable of and I felt sure he would be thereabouts.
Vieux Lion Rouge was slightly disappointing as well, particularly having looked to have stayed better than Blaklion last time. Blaklion was a silly price, despite running a big race. 8/1 in such an open National looked madness.
Well done to all those who backed One For Arthur at better odds than me. I backed him the day the weights came out at 20/1 and felt that those odds were probably about the right odds of his chances on the ground yesterday but in the end I managed to beat SP and warrant the ante-post bet.
It turned out that I had to miss the race live and had taped it to watch about an hour later. Sadly, the first words from the lassie driving my Taxi were:- “One For Arthur won the Grand National” at least it was winning news but it rather spoiled the mystery.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 10, 2017 at 00:54 #1296324Very entertaining race and some excellent early nominations on this forum for One for Arthur and Cause of Causes. Congratulations. I found it quite easy to dismiss the first two.
One thing I got spot on, sour taste it leaves all the same. Ridiculous Nicholas Henderson who should be deeply ashamed of running Cocktails At Dawn whose performance was exactly what could have been expected. The one bit of mayhem he did not cause was Vicente’s departure at the first. He fell independently as seen CLEARLY on the ITV re-run.
Great stuff from Davy Russell on the admirable Saint Are

April 10, 2017 at 21:47 #1296420Thanks all for the kind words but it sounds like MOM was storming in to OFA – well done him and all backers.
LS, that’s interesting. It crossed my mind after the race that he could still have improvement in him and might be a GC outsider. Can’t recall a horse ranging up so easily turning in, making lots of ground quickly yet swinging on the bridle when he got there. He did a similar job at Warwick where it’s not at all easy to come from well off the pace. He’s a classy horse.
I think it was you who originally highlighted the 40s available so cheers for that.
Been on him weekly for months
And got him with Ricky fowler in the golf too which makes tomorrow interesting
Well done all on him
Great to see 40 jocks and horses came home safe too
What a deserved winner he was, and great to see a proper stamp of a chaser win the big one.
I could not have had him on that ground, but you could not grudge that won at all.
Steeplechasing, you were quick off the mark with him, and what a great early call by you, and what a price. Middle, it sounds like you had a win to remember, enjoy every moment.
I thought I was in with a shout with Roi Des Francs, but he met with those traffic problems after the first circuit, and I was cursing my bad luck. He will definitely be On my shortlist for future big chases, and I wouldn’t hesitate to bet him for this again, I think he loved it
