Nightmare Gord

That reminds me of the the time I had a few quid on Wellforth, a total outsider in The Classic Chase at Warwick, think I had him at something like 125-1. I had a day out, and I’m in the pub watching, already a bit pissed, and about to get even more pissed as Wellforth digs out the victory. Unfortunately, through my drunken eyes, I’d mistaken Rigadin De Beauchene for Wellforth………….it fair wasted my day out.
For the record, Wellforth pulled up lol
April 12, 2016 at 10:10 #1242148As the new conditions and fences sort themselves out, my three key rules will be:
1. Don’t back anything that has run in the race before
2. Anything with endless stamina, mark it up hugely
3. Look for something with class, no matter the weight (assuming it meets 1 and 2)
2017 will mark the 40th anniversary of the last ‘multiple winner’ – Red Rum (who was a freakish horse anyway)
The likelihood of anything repeating a win has probably diminished since the fences were adjusted through various phases to what they are now.
You’re very fickle steeplechasing, isn’t it only a few days since you napped Many Clouds for this years race

I’d sooner be fickle than skint! :)
April 12, 2016 at 19:26 #1242194Surprised Gilgamboa hasn’t gotten a mention yet, I backed him this year he jumped really well and having watched him closely I think Power rode him to conserve stamina had he been a bit more confident I think he may have got closer to the winner. Can’t see him getting much more weight than he had this year, whereas the likes of The Last Samurai is likely to get a hefty increase. Hopefully Bolger doesn’t start messing around running it in the Cross Country at Cheltenham…

I don’t think Power thought he was going to get home so he probably made up his mind to ‘nurse’ him from the turn in. He has actually stayed pretty well from the last and appeared to be cutting the third back on the line. It was a very good effort but I wouldn’t trust him to reproduce the performance.
April 13, 2016 at 13:52 #1242257Decent effort from Conas Taoi at Cheltenham just know staying on to finish second to old Any Currency, must admit haven’t seem much of him prior to today and not even sure he’d be aimed at this but certainly looked like he could have a big staying handicap victory in his locker.
April 15, 2016 at 19:24 #1242514Hi Wallet, he’s came on leaps and bounds this year, but unfortunately he’s way off the rating required to get into the race at the moment, but hopefully he can land one of the other big handicaps in the immediate future. He’s still got time on his side as well.
Good luck with him
April 15, 2016 at 21:53 #1242535I’ll throw Marinero into the mix.
He is one of the most unexposed novice chasers around with plenty more sure to come as he tackles marathon trips. He’ll need to win a decent pot to handicap himself into the race of course, but he has shown glimpses of his staying prowess when the handbrake has been let off around three miles. He was entered in the National Hunt Chase and Irish National until the final declaration stages so Gigginstown and Tony Martin clearly view him as a potential National type.
A liking for good ground is also a good thing for a National prospect nine years out of ten.
Now I just need someone to quote him!
April 16, 2016 at 15:34 #1242682That “few quid a week job” has just started Nathan………..all systems go after that
April 16, 2016 at 18:33 #1242709Yeah, I thought he was going on to win once he took it up. Had him each way today at 20’s so will dabble along the way and see if I can build up a stake on him. He’s certainly a classy enough horse. Do you think they will prepare his season with the National as the main target, Bobby….?
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
April 17, 2016 at 10:09 #1242773Well done Nathan

I’d be amazed if they don’t target it now Nathan, they seem keen to target him for the bigger races.
I can see him starting off at Carlisle for the Colin Parker Memorial, followed by a tilt at The Hennessy. Those 2 races will probably dictate future plans, but I think his season would surely take him to Cheltenham, before heading for The National.
Whether he’ll be good enough remains to be seen, but he’s worth a tilt at The National after yesterday.
April 17, 2016 at 23:26 #1242826I thought Carole’s Destrier would be a nice type for this.
Wonder if Hadrian’s Approach will spearhead another Seven Barrows campaign

I think Seeyouatmidnight would be scuppered by the ground 9 times out of ten
April 18, 2016 at 10:33 #1242842What about Djakadam? Not priced up anywhere i looked so maybe its a very long shot but the case for him is as follows … he will be an 8 year old next year. He is grade one quality but just not quite good enough to win a top class grade one like the gold cup, king george, aintree bowl etc. Similar in that respect to many clouds. Has previous form of carrying 11st 10 to win a big handicap, giving weight away and winning it by 8 lengths. Is an excellent jumper despite his two falls at cheltenham. Is a stayer, has won a 3 mile 1 handicap on heavy ground, has been placed in a gold cup on soft ground, so i dont think the grand national trip on good-soft or soft ground or even soft to heavy ground would be any problem. He doesnt seem to have a significant turn of speed but just gallops away at a good speed, which is what is needed for a national.
And i think his chance of winning a gold cup are gone. Mullins and walsh always want to keep horses apart. Vautour looks to be their best chance of a gold cup winner, along with something like Black Hercules, so i believe that djakadam will be sent somewhere else. Either the Ryanair or the grand national look the options. Why send it to the ryanair when horses like killutagh vic, outlander, shaneshill, douvan, valseur lido, black hercules etc are all possibilities for mullins.
He would just need to start planning now to try get the horse dropped a few pounds between punchestown, next autumn and winter aswell to get it a mark of about 163/4 for the national.April 21, 2016 at 21:26 #1243136Another win today Wallet
getting there, be interesting to see what mark he gets after today.September 3, 2016 at 00:43 #1261934The Last Samuri is likely to start off on The Charlie Hall or Becher Chase, according to Kim Bailey.
September 14, 2016 at 18:19 #1263460Don’t think we seen too many Aintree contenders at Listowel today, but took a chance on Wrath of Titans @ 250’s. He’d have to win again to even get in, and might be one for Fairyhouse, but happy to take a chance at that price.
October 9, 2016 at 18:42 #1266444I mentioned on The Munster National thread that Tiger Roll might be Gigginstowns Aintree horse, and seen nothing today to change my mind. Very impressive winner, and that should be enough to get him on a nice mark.
He’ll probably have a quiet couple of runs now, and go under the radar a bit, and I’d fully expect his price to drift over the coming months, but happy to have a few quid on at 100’s, for what I consider to be a realistic contender.
