Three Faces West makes his seasonal re-appearance at Carlisle tomorrow, and provided they’ve spent a bit of time on that jumping style of his, then I think he could quickly come into the picture for Aintree. Doesn’t look the toughest of tasks tomorrow, for which he’s around the 6-4 mark.
I dropped the ball a little with him, and didn’t get round to adding him to the exchange market, but he still looks a big price at 66’s with Stan James, and Sportsbook.
October 12, 2016 at 19:37 #1266825I was sure I had mentioned Wounded Warrior on this thread but must have been dreaming. I see Meade has spoken of him as a National horse in a recent stable tour and he’s definitively a horse with potential to improve. He hasn’t had much racing and looks a stayer. The National may come a year too soon for him this season but he could make his presence felt in some big races along the way.
October 13, 2016 at 00:21 #1266847You’re not dreaming Tommy, though it was actually on last years thread we discussed him.
I had a feeling he must be due back, as his price has barely wavered on Betfair the last 2, 3 months. Think we both liked the look of him last year, and but for the strength in depth they had, could have been a Gold Cup horse. He’s obviously had a few problems, but he did get a Gold Cup entry last season, so he must have been showing something. Very interesting that Meade mentioned Aintree, and I’ll watch with interest as to where they start him back.
October 15, 2016 at 09:25 #1267152THM, Wounded Warrior entered in The JNWine Chase at Down Royal.

Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
October 15, 2016 at 09:45 #1267163Nothing yet Nath.
I reckon he might appear at Carlisle at the start of next month, en-route to Newbury, but total guesswork at this stage, and there’s always The Charlie Hall as well. I could almost see him getting an entry for The Betfair as well, in the hope that it ended up heavy.
Been chipping away at him for Aintree, but always the worry that one win will blow his mark. The minute I hear anything, I’ll let you know.
October 23, 2016 at 17:39 #1268372Just put this on my blog:
Silvergrove was moved to Ben Pauling’s yard last season and should have been 3 from 3 going into the Cheltenham Festival. On his debut for Pauling he unshipped his rider when leading on the run in after the saddle separated from its tree. He went on to win at Newbury and Kempton then headed to Cheltenham for the Kim Muir. In that race he disputed the lead throughout, jumping superbly (his trainer says he’s the best jumper he has handled), but paid for being in the van by fading late to finish 3rd of 22 carrying 11.5
Pauling (better know for training Barters Hill) must get him a higher handicap mark to guarantee a run in the National and the trainer says he will attempt to do that in the Becher Chase over the National fences in December. If successful there, Pauling says he will not be seen again until the weights are published.
Silvergrove will be 9 come National day. He has the pace to be up there early and avoid trouble, though will probably need to be ridden more conservatively than in the Kim Muir. His jumping is sound, he is improving (he’s improved, officially, by 23 lbs since joining Pauling) and he’d be too big a price at 40/1 never mind 80/1 – Bet 365.
October 23, 2016 at 23:55 #1268425Interesting candidate Joe, and though he’ll probably not make my list for the big one, I’d be very interested in him for The Becher, though certainly hard to argue with that 80’s, certainly based on that Kim Muir run.
October 24, 2016 at 00:04 #1268426Although high enough off of 155, he still looks interesting for The National, and according to Jonjo today, they’re at least considering it for him, though he does acknowledge that he’s still a young horse. I wouldn’t rule him out of The Gold Cup either, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t take in one, if not both, those races.
October 25, 2016 at 14:51 #1268555As expected Nathan, going for The Colin Parker at Carlisle on Sunday.
October 25, 2016 at 17:33 #1268591Silvergrove is on my list for the season. The dam was a decent hurdler in the US and he’s got that Old Vic breeding like a couple of National winners.
Pauling is a very good trainer and has a good relationship with De Boinville, Bass and others due to being Henderson’s assistant during the golden period a few years ago. Massive plus when trainers can call on a good jockey to school and race ride these types when preparing for a National. NDB is top class and Bass is underrated
October 26, 2016 at 18:43 #1268750Definitely Minella Rocco for me at this stage, and I’m happy to have a very early punt at 33-1.
October 31, 2016 at 19:24 #1269854Well I got the first part right Nathan, but after yesterday, I think connections are going the Graded route, though it looks like he’ll only get a tentative entry for Aintree now.
November 2, 2016 at 10:12 #1270101For me at this stage it’s got to be a return to my old mate The Last Samurai . Better ground last year and he’d have strolled home for me IMHO. Was absolutely gutted to get heavy ground as I had made him the best National prospect in many many years. Superb jumper, stamina to kill, well in on the weights and is absolutely as game as you like. 25/1 for next year is good enough for me to go again even though he will be probably a stone heavier come Aintree.
Also fancy the Paul Nicholls trained Vicente . Stamina to burn and jumps well too. 33s is enough to tempt me into a bet hoping Aintree is the target.
November 2, 2016 at 17:52 #1270220I think The Last Samuri might be too high in the weights this year MOM, but no denying he could have a decent season ahead of him, and The Rooneys strike me as the type to throw everything they’ve got at it. Good luck with him, he was certainly rock solid last year.
Vicente will surely go, and he’s hard to be too negative about
November 2, 2016 at 18:33 #1270225That rain that came a few hours before the off at Aintree this year was truly gutting for me.
I’m sure he would win if it didn’t pour down. Backed him antepost almost every week from before Christmas.
Hopefully this year is his time but I fear that he will be too high.
I also backed ONENIGHTINVIENNA Last year and if he progresses this year, I’ll go In on him for the 2017 renewal. He took a big bump and didn’t like the ground this year but hopefully he matures. A national horse who probably ran a year or two early.
November 3, 2016 at 15:15 #1270327I feel your pain mom, I had the same with Double Seven 2 years ago for a massive amount.
Good luck with Onenightinvienna, it was certainly one year too early at the very least, and remains one of the strangest decisions I seen last year, it seemed the least suitable target for him.
