I agree with a lot of that Marlingford, and although the current nature of the race prevents it, I do myself miss the big National horses returning year after year. Very much like yourself, this was a lot of the appeal when I was growing up. Sadly though, I think those days are long behind us, and it would just be unfair now.
I doubt there’s an easy answer to it, and I don’t think there’s a solution that would suit everyone.
Now to find the winner haha

You are right VTC, there is no easy answer, and even if changes were made this would not bring back the past. Probably best I focus on appreciating what we still have; I certainly don’t think finding the winner has become any easier!
February 18, 2017 at 13:02 #1287880Yeah, no point dwelling now Marlingford. The funny thing is though, that despite it’s now re-vamped “feel” it’s still the biggest race of the year, and the biggest day for racing by some distance, and I still loo forward to it as much as I ever did.
Yup, still tough to dig out the winner, and I’ve only managed it 4 times.
February 18, 2017 at 13:12 #1287884Do we know when the first forfeit stage is? Hoping Champagne West runs and keeps the weights similar to how they are…
February 18, 2017 at 13:14 #128788528th February Peter, and the next one will be 21st March
I think there’s a chance Champagne West will run, as would be ideal for Stellar Notion, who they seem to be quite keen on for this.
February 18, 2017 at 13:23 #1287886Good stuff. Hopefully Gigginstown will withdraw their ten thousand entries in protest of the post brexit conspiracy that is the rating system and hopefully Tour Des Champs might just squeeze in!
February 18, 2017 at 15:33 #1287917Glad i got the 27s while they were available! A very gutsy performance by a horse who is surely now thrown in at the weights?
February 19, 2017 at 12:02 #1288041I backed Vieux Lion Rouge each way at 100-1 last year despite several posters on here saying he wouldn’t stay. Sure enough he travelled like a dream only to weaken from two out. David Pipe said yesterday that he’s matured but do you really see him staying the trip this year?
I’ve twice managed to back the winner of the National the year before it won(Mon Mome and Red Marauder). I don’t want to miss out this time!!

Champagne West has jumped a lot better on his last two starts than previously, VTC. However, don’t think it’s coincidental that’s gone hand in hand with getting an easy lead out front – even then made a howler 5 out. Doubt CW will be able to lead throughout in the National. Also looked a 2m4fm to 3m2f (at most) horse, rather than (my preference) effective at 3m2f+
Value Is EverythingFebruary 20, 2017 at 16:42 #1288198Yeah, I don’t think The National would be ideal for him either Ginger. His Thyestes win was easily in the top 5 best performances of the season so far, but he’s not on my radar for this at all. I wouldn’t say no to a big run in The Gold Cup though.
February 20, 2017 at 16:58 #1288200tbh VTC, probably more front runners in the Gold Cup so can’t see Champagne West jumping well enough in that either. Also, suspect held up outsiders will do better than prominent outsiders who can get racing too soon. But I could well be wrong.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 21, 2017 at 10:41 #1288250I loved that performance in The Thyestes Ginger, but yeah, still takes a leap of faith for Gold Cup. I would be very happy to be wrong though lol
February 21, 2017 at 10:41 #1288251Gallant Oscar & Viex Morvan both out.
February 23, 2017 at 01:19 #1288533I might have a small punt on any of my horses in your ten to follow comp VTC, if they run.
At the moment that’s Le Mercurey, Minella Rocco, Carole’s Destrier. Although I don’t hold much hope of Le Mercurey winning bar a Foinavon type incident, and Minella Rocco last 2 runs not inspiring either.
Already have Carole’s Destrier, The Young Master, Vicente (each way for 5 places)
The Last Samuri, One For Arthur, Vieux Lion Rouge (Win : Price too low for EW betting )

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.February 23, 2017 at 13:28 #1288565I wouldn’t be in a rush to write off Le Mercurey, and don’t think he’d need a Foinavon incident to take a hand, and I’d actually give him a live chance.
February 24, 2017 at 11:35 #1288659Champagne West has been scratched.

I put him up earlier Bobby, and I bet him at 66/1. I think some
Of his form works out really well (quite a lengthy bit, 2 pages back
on this thread) I think he’s a very decent outsider
February 24, 2017 at 19:46 #1288697Yeah, thought you were on him Graham, and 66’s, what a price……best of luck with him
