Ground conditions could be anything from good-firm (if Epsom escapes the storms) to soft if hit severely. So it’s difficult to bet/tip right now.
Value Is EverythingJune 7, 2014 at 02:39 #481377If ever a horse was bred to win the Derby then its
Australia
,Darren spotted this fellow way back and snaffled the 25/1 another brilliant bit of foresight,I cant see him out of the first 3 no matter what the ground.Would I take 6/4 now though?Well I remember way back to 1985 on the morning of the Oaks,I was sitting on 10/1 vouchers about
Oh so sharp
winning and she traded at 6/4 on the eve of the event too,I thought she was a stone wall certainty,She was. However I’m not interested in 6/4 about ‘Australia’,I’m looking at another
At first sight
scenario, this fellow ran em ragged 4 yrs ago at 100/1 and only the mighty ‘Workforce’ could catch him.I reckon if the rain does come
Kingfisher
at 80/1 could emulate that performance,I have taken 100/1 and above about his chances and 20’s to place. When ‘Australia’ runs past him at the furlong pole I’ll still be shouting for a place from a horse who has St Leger written all over him.Good Luck Darren fingers crossed for you.
Best of luck Darren, I posted about Australia on the 30th of June last year and watched him get beaten. I saw him win next time but was not impressed, so I missed the boat that sailed with 25/1 written on the side.
Well done for keeping the faith and your horse has contracted way down to hot favourite. I’m on Western Hymn at 33/1, 20/1, 16/1 and 14/1, some of it each way, but I am not confident and he never came in to the single figure price I expected. If he places I’ll be happy.
My lays are Geoffrey Chaucer and Kingston Hill and I’m taking Fascinating Rock to emerge top of the three who ran in the Derrinstown.
Australia should probably win this but I doubt he’s as hot as O’Brien has claimed. I am fairly sure Kingman would beat him again over a mile and that is not exactly "Best ever" material.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 7, 2014 at 06:56 #481388I’ve backed
Kingston Hill
to win the Derby today but I have this feeling that won’t go away that
Sudden Wonder
is going to run a big race too and at a generous 66/1 I couldn’t help but have a little each way,
Saw him win at the Craven Meeting and was very impressed and unlike some I thought his Derby Trial 3rd to Snow Sky was not a bad effort and the booking of Kevin Manning to ride this son of New Approach..perfect.
Kingston Hill (win)
Sudden Wonder (ew)Good luck..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 7, 2014 at 08:50 #481415Aiden could do with a win to give Gosden and Hannon something to think about in the trainers title. I’d be happy with Australia to win had him for the Ante Post comp at big odds and done a £2 each way at the time. I also like his other runner Orchestra and with a line through him Romsdal is a decent price and with Richard Hughes on board searching for his first Derby win I’ll be cheering him on aswell.

I second you on Kingman beating Australia over a mile again. However, they will never run against each other again now. I will also wager that Kingman will reverse form with Night of Thunder in the Sussex Stakes, and possibly remain unbeaten after the Guineas, throughout the rest of the season.
June 7, 2014 at 10:44 #481475I think Australia is too short all things considered and could be a shock result this year i reckon.
My three against the field are Kingston Hill, Impulsive Moment and Ebanoran.
For a bit of fun we’re offering a free tenner bet on the World Cup Final to anyone who predicts the Derby 1-2-3 (correct order) on our Racing Forum facebook page.

Agree wholeheartedly about Kingfisher Gord, 20/1 for a place definitely worth a few pound. As you say he should appreciate the step up in trip and he won’t mind the rain softened ground. Geoffrey Chowser, as Aidan calls him, my main bet at 16/1 although he’s pretty friendless in the betting today.
June 7, 2014 at 13:03 #481513Time of first race suggests still good ground, with no more significant rain forecast.
My 100% book for good ground is:
Australia 13/8
True Story 9/1
Geoffrey Chaucer 9/1Kingston Hill 11/1
Orchestra 13/1
Arod 15/1Western Hymn 20/1
Ebanoran 20/1
Fascinating Rock 20/1
Romsdal 33/1
Pinzolo 50/1
Sudden Wonder 300/1
Kingfisher 300/1
Impulsive Moment 500/1
Our Channel 1000/1

June 7, 2014 at 13:19 #481515I’ve just seen the prize money for 1st. It’ll put O’Brien back in the hunt so I might just cheer on Varian, Dunlop, Oxx, Weld etc.

It’s Alzheimers Nathan.

As long as Fallon comes in to the winners enclosure, I don’t mind.

June 7, 2014 at 15:20 #481538Was there ever any doubt? ^^
Maybe I should stick to the no winner below 7/1 in ages stat…
June 7, 2014 at 15:30 #481541I do not see AUSTRALIA getting beat at Epsom unless there is a horse from O’Brien yard on at 25/1 this horse is one to beat he is.Though GEOFFREY CHAUNCER may go to racingpost trophy i still see AUSTRALIA as there number one.
Wise words from Darren indeed quoted from the opening post on this thread from last year.I am a very proud man this weekend seeing both Steve and darren leading DLAPS contributors picking both Oaks and Derby winners at big prices in a way only TAPK has done in the past.Your King is very proud indeed.I cant say the same about Ginge mind who is to Hindsight what these guys are to Foresight.Well done again chaps, celebrate hard as you both have to do it again now!
June 7, 2014 at 15:38 #481543It’s great to see a really good quality Derby winner/field after recent seasons. Australia lived up to AOB’s confidence/adjectives. May not quite be his best yet, but not far off and still potential to be just that. Settled well in a truly run race and on the bridle as all others were under presure.
1 1/4 lengths back to Kingston Hill, put up a performance good enough to win many a Derby after a first class ride from a first time Derby jockey.
Daylight (well 3 1/4) back to third Romsdal, looking a Leger horse, who also had daylight (3 3/4) back to 4th Arod.
Quality stuff.

Am delighted for Darren and Steve, we’ve now got two ante-post kings now the old one has been dethroned.
…And very pleased with my own Epsom profit thank you very much.
