That is quite a bitter post.Perhaps it was all too much for you.You need to lie down for a while.

Not bitter andy,I’m a realist even poor Joseph has inherited the irritating ‘Listen’ bit and coming from a 21yo’s mouth is certainly a bit condascending, shame because he comes across as a decent well balanced young man.Never all too much for me,I thrive on horseracing and in the scheme of things it all pales into insignificance when we think of the bigger picture of life itself.I did indeed lie down for a while, slept like a log, woke to my beautiful 5yo daughter wanting to watch ‘Little Princess’ and yet feel exactly the same as I did when I posted the above.Your School report would definitely say ‘Must try harder’!

    certainly

    a bit condascending,

Why think the worst Gord? "Listen", it’s "certainly" not "condascending", just a nervous thing someone says, "know what I mean".

I was slightly irritated by the comments about Aidan training the winner three years running; ok it is a good stat but how many trainers have ever entered quite so many horses in one race year after year, including their own pacemakers? Even so we’ll never forget the year that we went to the Arc and Aidan and Joseph,

spent so much time talking to people and signing racecards; they didn’t have to do that. Good on them.

Surely this year’s Derby is an easy one to solve , just as the 2012 Derby was.

    The O’Brien hotpot wins !

Yes folks, it really is that simple. :D

Yes, as I wrote back then – it really IS that simple. Some people positively hurt their brain trying to look for something that isn’t there – when all they do – in their vain search for " value " is to end up backing a horse which they deemed "value" ( yes, that priceless word again  )and then invariably watch the good old jolly hose in – as per.

As for the victor himself ; well, I reckon he’s a very good horse and I think Aidan will view the Eclipse as his next stepping stone, before taking on Treve et al in the Arc. My advice is, best to keep on the right side of Australia – just to be on the safe side.

I backed Arod and Western Hymn (£5 on each) for value but I did have a £2 safety double on Australia and Baitha Alga to get my £10 back 8)

Australia’s Derby was miles better than the awful one that Camelot won.

When Australia was closing down the leaders just over 2 furlongs out, I thought he was going to win in the style of Authorized back in 2007 but was made to fight for it by the gallant Kingston Hill.

I do agree with TAPK that should the going had been softer, Kingston Hill would have prevailed.

I thought Australia won more comfortably than the margin suggests. I thought he was always holding Kingston Hill ( one for the Irish Derby methinks ! 8) ) and was simply idling once he hit the front. No denying that Kingston Hill is top notch, but like all other Derby runners-up ( apart from Dancing Brave ) , they are invariably flattered by the proximity to the winner.

I also think that Camelot’s Derby was a much poorer affair than the 2014 running – and that yesterday’s winner, Australia, is a much better colt than Camelot ever was.

Only time will tell if it was a good derby but the front two look top notch to me. Both seemed to have a bit of a problem with the camber of the course but australia was a clear winner and anybody who thinks kh can reverse placings is kidding themselves on. Joseph was hands and heels for the last few strides as he knew he had it won. He knew he had the race won so eased off to save the horse for races to come.He was cantering throughout the race and always looked the winner.I think he will drop the horse to 10f and if he did go for the sussex stakes that would be fantastic if not cirrus des aigles in the irish champion. He hasnt proved hes one of the best yet but think giving the way he won yesterday suggested decent surfaces will see him joining them. KH ran a cracker and the irsh derby is at his mercy though aobs adelaide will be a big contender there. i think he will get 124 as a rating as he was already on 119 going into the race.

Aidan has been proven right so far; why challenge him about the second horse. You are suggesting that he is wrong about that horse, that he would lose if the ground was less firm.I don’t think so.I just cannot take your opinion over Aidan’s.

Aiden said himself the horse wouldn’t want soft ground.

Which is why Australia and Kingston Hill may not reoppose again i.e … would probably beat each other on their preferred ground.

Not only is there a doubt about whether Australia would act on soft ground, but also a question mark about whether he’ll stay 1m4f on soft ground. Two out on Saturday Australia was on the bridle with every other horse being scrubbed along. Won the race through superior speed. Suspect 1m2f might be ideal and I’d be surprised if turning up in the Irish Derby if ground conditions place an emphasis on stamina.

Joseph repeatedly stated that he got to the front too soon.Who takes credit for that?Aidan I suppose.

The curragh isn’t the test Epsom is and I don’t think cool more would be worried about not winning the Irish derby. The only doubt is very soft going and aob has already said he wouldn’t run in those circumstances after came lots slog in the race. I hope he goes the 10f route and we can see his amazing cruising speed.

Having been trained for the Derby and gotten the Guineas out of the way I would think everything from a mile to a mile and 1/2 would be his meat and potatoes. Can you imagine him racing without worrying whether he is fit enough or will we lose the Derby if we take the Guineas seriously.

Lovely shots as usual David, what a great looking colt he is.
Have you any of Kingston Hill apart from the heartbreaking one of him coming home in second place?

Like Nathan..looking forward to your Royal Ascot gallery.

Thanks Jac – I’ve just added a couple of him to a flickr ‘Derby Day’ page where I’ve put a few more of my pics from the day.
