Yes great run from Mourilyan. Plenty of value for the e/w punters there. Take nothing from the winner who was wide throughout and has improved all spring. His galloping partner has been Shamoline Warrior who was scratched on Saturday when favourite for the Derby.
November 3, 2009 at 19:15 #256951if mourilyan had been more positively ridden surely he would ve given winner something to think about, jockey said he had little more to give but looked strongest stayer to me!
November 3, 2009 at 21:09 #256976Thats exactly what I was thought when I read the quote; I’m glad I didn’t get to see the race live because I would have been a wreck..Mourilyan did not seem to be stopping at the end of the race. What he said and what I saw didn’t tally somehow.
November 3, 2009 at 23:03 #256996Mourilyan was fantastic and credit to Terry Spargo who pointed out the horse as an ideal candidate for the Cup when he fell short of Veracity in the DRC Gold Cup earlier this year.
Unfortunately both jockey and trainer learnt that Mourilyan’s race pattern is unsuitable for a race like the Melbourne Cup, where the winner has recently been ridden in the front-half of the field, and leads entering the straight.
See Delta Blues/Pop Rock, Viewed, Media Puzzle, Makybe Diva etc etc
The field jams up like sardines with 600m to go and if you are at the back of the queue you will land deep in the scrum and be picking off horses steadily whilst the eventual winner has already taken off.
November 4, 2009 at 09:07 #257019Thanks for the explanation; it’s a fascinating race and I’m looking forward to next years already. What was interesting was how informative the trainers were when being interviewed and the technical
details they gave about horses weight, fitness etc. And having people like yourself and Snoop with local knowledge adds another dimension to the race and the lead up to it. Most grateful.

I’m sorry that’s simply generalised rubbish
