Probably my fave race of the year this. First Classic On THe Flat, so almost like the ‘real start’ of the flat season, and the first indication of what horses are classy. Last years win for me made it even more enjoyable.
Also, Rip Van Winkle has just overstretched according to AOB but reckons he’ll be fit for 2nd May.

The market says otherwise!
If that over-reach took place 6 weeks ago and the money has only come for Mastercraftsman in the last few days, that would indicate to me that the injury to Rip Van Winkle is more serious than first thought and he probably won’t even line up at Newmarket.

Agree with you lad, just passing on info.
I’m becoming more and more unconvinced by MasterCraftsMan every day that passes and never been a fan of Rip Van Winkle
March 23, 2009 at 01:43 #217964I like Karl Burke’s Lord Shanakill at a big price in the Guineas. Showed excellent Group race form last season (just pipped in Dewhurst after winning Mill Reef stakes). From a (relatively) small yard so no hype involved but his form looks good enough to me and at the 33/1 available, he’s worth an each-way shout IMO.
March 23, 2009 at 01:55 #217965Rip Van Winkle has been favourite for the Guineas all winter. He’s had a setback that has meant they "couldn’t do much with him for about six weeks" and we are told about it only now after the horse drifts in the betting and is removed from the lists by some bookmakers.
Old habits die hard. It really is depressing.

Have to say he’s one of the many I like in this David, looked progressive last season, had top class 6 and 7f form, looks like he’ll get a mile and should act on a fast surface or good surface. Dont know how Burke is for preparing a guineas horse but at 33-1 he ticks a lot of boxes.
On my shortlist for this I would also have:
Crowded House 8-1 Never won over shorter than 1mile as a juvenile[/color:t4dhv7ol]
Naqoos 8-1
Evasive 12-1 On 2yo track achievemnets his price is somewhat short but he has potential to be very good[/color:t4dhv7ol]
Intense focus 20-1
Art Connoiseur 33-1 (Poor form from ascot onwards, not guaranteed stayer, but boy was he good at ascot)[/color:t4dhv7ol]
Cityscape 33-1
Ashram 33-1
Lord Shanakill 33-1
Shaweel 33-1 Too big on the exchanges[/color:t4dhv7ol]
Delegator 40-1
Soul City 100-1So thats 11 then
(7 if I go against those with big enough negatives in red[/color:t4dhv7ol]) will need to get that rounded down over the next month or so.March 23, 2009 at 05:27 #217982Shortlists are the way to go, for now.
MASTERCRAFTSMAN
EVASIVE
ARAZAN
ASHRAM
FAME AND GLORY
CITYSCAPE
SHAWEELMarch 23, 2009 at 05:37 #217983Do you think Fame and Glory would have the speed for the guineas myles, I can see AOB sending him for the derby. I ahve him down as a derby st leger type.
March 25, 2009 at 15:16 #218287Have just had a little go e/w on Cityscape before the 33-1 disappears as there appears to be money for him this morning. Only hope is that Steve Drowne keeps the ride at Newmarket.
March 25, 2009 at 15:56 #218293I’m not doubting Fame And Glory will be far superior once staying (mind you, I prefer the Prix du Jockey-Club for him); his debut win at Navan was impressive enough, as a Montjeu 2YO over a mile, to indicate he would not be entirely out of place in the 2,000 Guineas.
But, another two predictions must come to fruition: a more sluggish, enduring 2,000 Guineas than usual, and a soft track.
March 25, 2009 at 16:01 #218295Have just also had a go on Delegator at 40-1 with Victor Chandlers before that goes, thats three of my shortlist are shortening at the minute. Havent made my mind up about evasive yet, but he does seem pretty strong in the market of late…
March 25, 2009 at 16:06 #218298He has been surprisingly firm – I think I questioned his place so far up the market once before.
March 25, 2009 at 17:02 #218310Indeed Myles a bet on him is really a bet that the dogs are barking right. He’s a likely sort on breeding and although he doesnt have useless form, it does call for considerable improvement.
The thing with him is he should go well on the all weather as well as gd-fm, so he could be doing some good work on the Al Bahathri or something at the minute, you just wouldnt know.
Was just having a thought regarding Crowded House, I know stats are there to be shot at, but with him being so short at 8-1 2nd fav, does anyone know who was the last horse to win the 2000 guineas having never won over shorter than a mile as a 2yo.

BULLY, What a question! i am struggling but i do remember Nashwan
having a similar profile, although the minimum distance he ran and won over was 7f! Horses that i thought might Golan, Island Sands, Tirol, Entrepreneur dont match your stat! Not that i give Crowded house any
chance of breaking that statistic anyway!March 25, 2009 at 19:48 #218341Bul, it could even be the LEGEND himself!

It’s a bit uncanny that each of the two words of DB’s name has the same number of letters as Crowded House and both horses have a terrific turn of foot.
