Librettist,
Thanks for the info (and concern!) regarding Ashram. FWIW, I backed Delegator out of the two, thinking he shaped best of all.
December 13, 2008 at 21:09 #196744and the sprinter Rip van winkle
I would have thought he was more of a Derby horse than a sprinter.
December 13, 2008 at 21:29 #196748Naaqoos bounces between 12.5 and 15 on betfair, rather than the 8/1 – 9/1 I think he is with the bookies. I have to put the money on each month, as I am on minimal wages and it stops me going on drinking binges.
Will be using May pay packet to go to Auteuil to see Denman. (Easier to get to Paris than Cheltenham.) Did Mandarin run in the GN, between Cheltenham and Auteuil ?. . . .Should I take the 2/1 now or wait for a better price Ha Ha HaYou should be keeping your money firmly in your pocket Gerald. Will be off to Auteuil for the big one myself and looking forward to seeing a great race:
Denman vs. Remember Rose (Jousselin winner) vs. Princesse D’Anjou (dual Grande-Steeplechase winner) vs. Oculi (leading 5yo) vs. Loulia (another leading 5yo) vs. Louping D’Ainay vs. Musica Bella etc.
Brilliant racing and there’s not a better jumps track in the world Gerald – we are so in need of a "Butte En Terre" at Cheltenham
December 13, 2008 at 21:40 #196749Mandarin never ran in the National to my [limited] knowledge.

I would have thought he was more of a Derby horse than a sprinter.
I have been debating the breeding of Rip van winkle on the Racing chat pages of C4 since the summer and i cant see where this colt is going to get the stamina for a 11/2m fom being related to "Dont forget me" and
"Stravinsky", he looks to me as though he would struggle to get the mile!December 13, 2008 at 22:52 #196758I don’t normally have an opinion, but when I saw Naaqoos at Longchamp, I thought "that’s the Guineas winner". I have to back my opinion when I have one.
Never been to Auteuil, but have been to Longchamp half a dozen times, and Saint-Cloud once (Arazi).
I ain’t putting a big portion on each month, and it would only get wasted on beer otherwise.December 13, 2008 at 23:59 #196768and the sprinter Rip van winkle

OK, this is sort of against the guidelines/rules and is mixing up threads a bit,
but it was reported on the RP website that Louping D’Ainay and Musica Bella would both receive entries for the Gold Cup & GN. Now I’d reckon there would be zero chance of them turning up for the GN (too close to important French races such as the one on 24th May). How about the Gold Cup? If they did, whereabouts would they finish?December 14, 2008 at 03:57 #196816Aidan, theres more chance of Denman winning the Ayr Gold Cup than
Rip van Winkle getting a 11/2m! have a close look at his breeding!December 14, 2008 at 04:37 #196825Aidan, theres more chance of Denman winning the Ayr Gold Cup than
Rip van Winkle getting a 11/2m! have a close look at his breeding!Like I said there would be doubts about him getting 12 furlongs (but it is certainly not out of the question), but I can guarantee you there is absolutely no chance he will ever race over 6 furlongs as you are suggesting.
December 14, 2008 at 06:28 #196837Rip Van Winkle might not get 1m4f but he definitely should not be labelled a sprinter. None of his performances have shown an electrifying turn-of-foot that is synonymous with 6-7F horses.
December 14, 2008 at 07:22 #196839It quite often comes up Soft at the Western meeting, and Denman does go fast in the middle of his races.

If they did, whereabouts would they finish?Louping is a serious candidate for the National apparently (well it’s his target at least). He made a couple of errors at the Water Jump in France in the Jousselin which would put me off a bit but it really is a proper jump with decent size water after it. From that point of view his jumping might be found out. Usually ridden by Dean Gallagher, Xavier Hondier or Christophe Pieux (mainly as owners number 1 rider has been on Musica Bella or Princesse D’Anjou – Phillip Carberry).
Musica Bella is the one with the most stamina – she stayed on well in the Jousselin and you’d imagine neither would have much problem getting into the race should they opt to go that route – wouldn’t think 4m+ would be a problem, in fact I’d say it would be beneficial to her if anything.
Runs in the Gold Cup would be interesting – any cut in the ground would be a great help to both and a true test of stamina which is likely with Denman leading from the front would also help. Can see them running into places at big prices but wouldn’t have them in any shorter than 33’s for the race.

December 14, 2008 at 17:17 #196878Damn, I put £2 on Louping for the Gold Cup, and ignored the National.
December 14, 2008 at 17:23 #196879(If anyone keeps on wondering about all these small bets I’m making, my strategy is to have small bets on the likely dangers at big prices, so that at the time of the race I can have a big bet on my main fancy without worrying about the imponderables.)
December 14, 2008 at 18:59 #196889thats what I do..I back @ 1/4 of the field in the National and then gleefully announce that I’ve backed the winner, and quite often panic just before the race starts and have a couple more..I do, however usually manage to have the winner at a good ante post price so make a profit..what I do enjoy is having my ante post bets when the weights come out and then seeing the prices come in and I’m getting better at knowing which horses are actually inteded runners..sorry this should be on GN thread shouldn’t it….
