FOREIGN ENTRIES-JAPAN CUP
At Tokyo Racecourse
PAPAL BULL (GBR, h5, bay)
-jogged 1/4 lap, walked (back stretch), cantered 1/4 lap, strongly cantered 1/4 lap, walked, on turf course
-ridden by P. Jones, from 6:40 to 6:50“He’s very fresh, and his appetite is enormous. He drinks well and his temperature is normal. It’s unbelievable, he dug a whole in the floor of his stall last night. His exercise was very good this morning and we’re looking forward to tomorrow.”
(Comments taken from G. Weir)
SIXTIES ICON (GBR, h5, bay)
-jogged 1/4 lap, cantered 1/2 lap, on turf course
(ridden by M. Denaro, from 6:40 to 6:50)“The horse looked good when he left England and he looks good now, but the Japanese horses are tough and it will be a bonus if we can beat them after going through a long season. Stall 11 is not too far wide, and from the middle in a one and a half mile race, you have time to find your position, so I’m happy with that. As long as he jumps out of the gate smoothly and can get into a comfortable rhythm….then I’ll leave it up to Johnny from there.”

PURPLE MOON (IRE, g5, bay)
-jogged 1/4 lap, cantered 1/2 lap, on turf course
(ridden by N. Rakotoarisoa, from 6:40 to 6:50)“He’s looking good and I’m glad that the turf is now almost “firm” at this stage. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. ”

http://japanracing.jp/_news2008/081129-04.htmlPapal Bull looks bullish. Sir Michael Stoute once said to a Japanese trainer :’I love your county veeery much,’ smiling all over his face. When? Just after his second win in the JC with Pilsudski. Perhaps, he may repeat it again to poor Japanese trainers.

I see Uma recently posted so I’d love to read something further from him/her.

I posted related information, replays, and etc. in another racing forum; see the link below:
http://thoroughbredchampions.com/forum/ … ic=29948.0The other way round, the cross is very popular in Japan (less of a surprise there!) and has had reasonable success…..and Strategem (2nd in the Nikkei Sho over 12f+).
Please put Stratagem high on the list because he was a good stayer. Unfortunately, he was sandwiched by two generations of excellent stayers, such as Deep Impact, Delta Blues, Heart’s Cry, and Lincoln, and had no G1 win.
■Sire (Sunday Silence)-Bms (Sadler’s Wells), according to earnings in the JRA:
1. Heavenly Romance (m, 8; 8-8-3-14)
2. Stratagem (h, 7; 5-7-5-13)– 3rd to Deep Impact in Tenno Sho (spring, G1) ’06, 2nd Lincoln in Nikkei Sho (G2) ’06, 5th to Delta Blues in Kikka Sho (JPN St Leger) ’04
3. Er Nova (m, 9; 5-11-3-14)
4. Reportage (g, 10; 4-16-11-38 )
5. Born King (h, 10; 2-1-1-13)
6. Hikaru Dokiseki (m, 7; 3-0-4-22)
7. Millenium Dancer (h, 11; 3-4-4-25)
8. Proton (h, 12; 3-0-2-16)
9. Toho Raijin (g, 12; 3-3-1-10)
10. Eishin Lighten (h, 6; 3-4-1-14)My impression is that it would be necessary in order for horses sired by Sunday Silence to win traditional classic distance races–more than 12f– at Tokyo or Kyoto Racecourse to have top-level European stayers on their dam sides.
I understand that Zarkava’s127 as a 3yo filly is nothing other than an indication that her performance was outstanding, IMO. As Bosranic wrote, if she can repeat that performance in foreign racecourses other than Longchamp as Ouija Board did, she could have a different dimension added to the rating.
If she should lose, I’m sure she should have a higher praise for the versatility. Not only in a win is revealed the true talent of an excellent horse, but also a defeat tells even more eloquently about it.
Take’s comments (compiled from his blog and the JRA web site):
‘Fortunately I managed to win the first two races. Winning them was more than I expected from what I was told of my horses. It was a pity that I couldn’t win the last one because I aimed at the third win.’
‘Our team ended up in second, but I fully relished the challenges. Competing at such a high level as a team is truly enjoyable–actually to the degree that I even felt guilt at that.’
‘It had been raining all day at Ascot. In such a weather, the British racecourses are nothing other than the ‘soft’ turf, which was lucky to me because the experience might benefit me in the future; next time I’d like to be back here again as a rider in the King George (smiling).’
Take is an intelligent jockey. Also he’s articulate; he can meaningfully answer after-the-race interviews, even with a bit of humour, which I think has contributed immensely to turning a general perception of horse racing towards regarding it as a sport. This is perhaps his greatest achievement, IMO.
No ‘Impact’ Ran on the Sale
This is a headline of an article in a web-paper summarizing the second day of the sale. True to the description, the sale still lacked in excitement in comparison to great expectations before the sale; even in the foals secession in which dozens of the first crops for two new sires, Heart’s Cry and Deep Impact, were listed, sales were ‘sluggish,’ or ‘steady’ at most.
A full sister to Vodka was knocked down to Darley by Mr John Ferguson for (about) $1m because of his unbelievably high praise to the Derby winner.
Unexpected was that Air Thule was just 100m yen; before the sale they said that it was highly likely for him to fetch $2m or more. He was bought by Mr Tada. According to the Racing Post:
He (Mr Tada) did say the price was lower than he had anticipated. “We expected we might have to spend more, so I’m pleased with the price,” he said.
http://www.racingpost.co.uk/news/master … ock%20NewsThe hottest topic of the sale seemed to be, not horses, but a man: ‘Who is Mr Tinkler ?’ Even he was inconspicuous (only one filly by Deep Impact).
Brandford Bloodstock bought a filly by Deep Impact out of Lhiz (a champion mare in Chile), #329, who is going to run in Britain together with (unspecified) two horses by Deep Impact, according to an interview with Mr Harry Sweeney at Paka Paka Farm.
The Live coverage via the internet is quite good, though!
The Result (Day Two)
http://www.jrha.or.jp/eng/html/sale_res … lash2.htmlHere is the result of Day One:
http://www.jrha.or.jp/eng/html/sale_res … lash1.htmlPatinack Farm (Nathan Tinkler, in Queensland, Australia ) bought 5 yearlings (1 colt, 3 fillies): #18 (f), #27 (c, by Agnes Tachyon out of Silk Prima Donna, ¥64m), #61 (f), #86(f), #162(f).
http://www.patinackfarm.com/I’m sure the firm will be aggressive in the foals session tomorrow. Perhaps, the firm may take some by Heart’s Cry or Deep Impact to Australia.
The highest bid yearling, ¥245m, was a colt by Agnes Tachyon, half-brother to Kurofune, who was bought by Mr Kondo, the ex-owner of Admire Moon.

http://www.jrha.or.jp/imgs/banner3.gifDeep Impact was unbeatable as well I seem to remember in the led up to 2006
Hope he does come, will get some serious value on the likes of New Approach and the SoldierAny horse is beatable; they are not machines.
Please don’t underestimate American dirt horses as well as their connections who are not so naive as their Japanese counterparts. Actually, they are so shrewd as was shown in their excessively cautious preparations in the Dubai World Cup. Who could have expected them in the race on DIRT?
Mr Asmussen is not like Mr Ikee, the trainer of Deep Impact who had been under a huge pressure of ‘MUST WIN’ atmosphere back home; it would be New Approach or SOF this time who find themselved in the same situation as DI’s while Curlin would be quite easy because a defeat wouldn’t deprive him of any honour which has been already established in America and Dubai. A win would be just a bonus–a big one, though.
In a word, As Geraldinho wrote: ‘It all depends on the dirt/turf transition.’
Having said that, I’m not so sure of whether it works.
The Grade III Arlington Handicap? And he shall be allotted topweight of 216lbs or similar?

I don’t know. But I would be certainly glad if Curlin comes to the Arc.
At the same time, I would have been more pleased if his connections had referred to the Arc AFTER any significant turf G1win in America; even in Japan, it seems to me that owners or trainers tend to refer to the race as if it were a matter of course after their colts have won a G1 on turf. Well… ‘see the world before saying something significant’ is what I feel at their comments.
Is it me, or does the Arc not have much appeal this year due to the lack of ‘very’ high profile runners?
What about this? Is he not a ‘very’ high profile runner?
——————-
So with a serious goal of running in France’s Arc de Triomphe — Europe’s most prestigious race, which is run on turf — he and Jackson said Curlin would also have a prep at Longchamp. But before they return overseas, Asmussen wants to see how Curlin handles a grass surface.
In that regard, Asmussen said he’d like to see Curlin’s next start be in a month over a large turf course such as Belmont (which has the $500,000, Grade I Man o’ War), Arlington (the $200,000, Grade III Arlington Handicap) or Toronto’s Woodbine (which doesn’t have a race but has slots revenue to make one happen).
