Has there been an instance of this cross in any horse of particular note?
When I saw this yearling and his pedigree:

I was reaching down on the ground to pick up my jaw.
He is of the particular cross I have mentioned – out of a regal bloodline in Australia filled with Oaks winners of the past and present.
Name is Seventh Reason – I’m hoping the sireline is not a hindrance when racing in Oz, of which past progeny have not been kind to the racing style.
November 10, 2008 at 19:45 #189071I cant think of any that come to mind myles, although godolphin had quite a few sunday silence horses a few years back. Sal might know more.
Sunday silence horses are generally IMO good at middle distances on firmer conditions, sadlers wells is the same but with a bit of cut. I imagine that a cross of the two is going to produce a stayer, whether it has the natural speed to tackle shorter trips is hard to say but if he is only a yearling and he is that tall, then one might think he will be a stayer in time.
November 10, 2008 at 21:45 #189083Space Telescope, by Galileo (by Sadler’s Wells) out of a Sunday Silence mare, has won his only start in a 7f maiden at Leopardstown recently. The RP’s comments indicates he looks like a horse who will need a trip next year.
The other way about, the 10f Group 1 winner Heavenly Romance, is by Sunday Silence out of a Sadler’s Wells mare.
Seventh Reason is a very good-looking fellow indeed, isn’t he? He doesn’t look like a speedster, and his pedigree suggests he’ll need 10f or more to be shown to best advantage.
November 11, 2008 at 04:46 #189150Seventh Reason ran second in a maiden race over just below 1 mile in September.
Just could not quicken, but I worry if he will have any toe once he competes up towards 1 mile 4 furlong and further.
Nonetheless, I’ll start to bet ante-post for the AJC Australian Derby (mid-April – 1m4f) once the markets open.
November 13, 2008 at 05:29 #189513No Sadler’s Wells/Sunday Silence cross has ever got black-type – however I think the cross is surprisingly rare – there are definitely none that have run in Europe.
The other way round, the cross is very popular in Japan (less of a surprise there!) and has had reasonable success. Heavenly Romance, as Ven says, won the Tenno Sho and Sapporo Kinen over 10f, and also won a bt race over a mile. Born King (another from a blue blooded family) won the Keisei Hai over 10f and was 3rd over 11f in the American Jockey Club Cup at Tokyo. Ingot won the Shion Stakes over 9f. Placed black-type horses are Er Nova (2nd in the Metropolitan over 12f and the Stayers Stakes over 18f) and Strategem (2nd in the Nikkei Sho over 12f+).
However, I’m wary of applying the results of a reverse cross to a horse, it rarely works out the same!

Please put Stratagem high on the list because he was a good stayer. Unfortunately, he was sandwiched by two generations of excellent stayers, such as Deep Impact, Delta Blues, Heart’s Cry, and Lincoln, and had no G1 win.
■Sire (Sunday Silence)-Bms (Sadler’s Wells), according to earnings in the JRA:
1. Heavenly Romance (m, 8; 8-8-3-14)
2. Stratagem (h, 7; 5-7-5-13)– 3rd to Deep Impact in Tenno Sho (spring, G1) ’06, 2nd Lincoln in Nikkei Sho (G2) ’06, 5th to Delta Blues in Kikka Sho (JPN St Leger) ’04
3. Er Nova (m, 9; 5-11-3-14)
4. Reportage (g, 10; 4-16-11-38 )
5. Born King (h, 10; 2-1-1-13)
6. Hikaru Dokiseki (m, 7; 3-0-4-22)
7. Millenium Dancer (h, 11; 3-4-4-25)
8. Proton (h, 12; 3-0-2-16)
9. Toho Raijin (g, 12; 3-3-1-10)
10. Eishin Lighten (h, 6; 3-4-1-14)My impression is that it would be necessary in order for horses sired by Sunday Silence to win traditional classic distance races–more than 12f– at Tokyo or Kyoto Racecourse to have top-level European stayers on their dam sides.
December 1, 2008 at 00:44 #193425Cesario won the 2005 G1 American Oaks. She was by Special Week who is a son of Sunday Silence. Special Week won the Japanese Derby and was third in the Japan Cup as a 3YO. He won the race as a 4YO, beating Montjeu in the process. Cesario’s dam is Kirov Premiere by Sadlers Wells.
It’s not quite a Sunday Silence X Sadlers Wells black-type cross, but close.
