Thanks OTS, I’ll try it nearer the day.
I watched the Melbourne Cup on http://horseracing.bigpond.com/ which was free and simple, but I’ve no idea if they’ll cover the Japan Cup.

Just found this on the RP website:

CHAMPION jockey Ryan Moore is hoping a combination of fast ground and a strongly run race will help a “more mature” Papal Bull end his career on the highest of notes in Sunday’s Japan Cup.

Backed up by Purple Moon and Sixties Icon, Papal Bull heads a three-strong British contingent in an 18-runner field featuring the last three winners of the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in Arc flop Meisho Samson, superstar filly Vodka and this year’s Classic winner Deep Sky.

The partnership finished seventh last year, when they came with a late charge after missing the break and Moore reckons there are grounds for expecting better this year from Papal Bull.

“One of the stalls handlers hit him and he’s a horse you can’t bully so he went sideways and missed the start,” said Moore.

“Hopefully there’llbe no repeat of that. I just think that he’s strengthened up and is a bit more mature this year.”

“I’d like to think he has improved a good few pounds on last year and he travelled over a lot better.

“He stays the trip and he’ll be finishing strongly – it’s a lovely galloping track and the ground will probably be riding fast, which is what he likes.”

    Let’s hope he’s right. 8)

This is a tough race. Vodka has proven this season to be very sharp and ultimately a winner of the Yasuda Kinen against top Japanese milers.

If she gets the distance nowadays is interesting – not a doubt, not a concern, just interesting. Her time in winning the Tokyo Yushun was 2 and 3 seconds quicker than that of Meisho Samson and Deep Sky though. (I’m taking those times on face value only)

Of course, a horse possibly questioned as too quick for the Japan Cup won the Japan Cup last year.

There is no genuine pace but it is bound to eventuate anyway. No expectations of records being slashed though.

I could almost split Meisho Samson and Vodka down the middle. They both have similar levels of doubt – will she step up to 2400m OK now? Will he be back in full flight post-Arc?

Anyone know where I can bet PMU for this? RP say there is a PMU market but I cant find it anywhere.

For the record, I’m still sticking to my guns – Meisho Samson will not win this and I’ll be very suprised if Vodka manages it. I have worries as to whether she will get the trip and feel that, if any of the top three in the market are to make an impact here, Deep Sky will reverse the form with Vodka.

Deep Sky is running over C&D here from his last win at 12f (The Japanese Derby). According to the RP, Deep Sky only has 3 runs but I’m sure this must be wrong? I can see Deep Sky going off at 2/1 or around that mark and making a mockery of Meisho Samson here.

I’m happy to be on Purple Moon and Sixties Icon here at big prices. The way Luca is talking this doesnt seem to be a warm-up race for Purple Moon. They want this just as much as they will want the Hong Kong Vase next month.

Sixties Icon is reported to have travelled well and has settled in beautifully. The ground should also be spot on for Noseda’s colt – as should the jockey. You have to have confidence with Johnny Murtagh on board (with no team tactics/stable horses getting in his way as much as I respect AOB). This is the revised target, as I already said, after a lacklustre Breeders Cup performance.

I still cant have Papal Bull. I think my selections would beat Papal Bull on firm/good to firm over here and with Papal Bull finishing 7th (5L back) against some of these top Japanese horses in last years’ renewal, despite missing the break, gives me extra faith in Purple Moon and Sixties Icon.

It’s a great race in prospect.

    Good luck all

Well, I’ve had an each way stab on the American horse March Side at Japanese odds – apparently, he’s about 50s over there, but only half that with the UK bookies. His earlier runs don’t inspire much confidence, but he looked very decent when winning the Canadian International last time out under todays rider, leaving some very decent animals (including the German superstar Quijano) in his wake.

Just had a glance at the field.

I like the look of Oken Bruce Lee. The race could be run to suit and he’s in good form. Not too sure how he’s generally priced-up, but I think 10/1 is an attractive ew price.

Papal Bull could improve on his effort last year in an open contest. Michael Stoute will have him primed for the final start of his career. I hope he goes well – a true character and one I’ll miss.

Sixties Icon wouldn’t have won at the Breeders Cup, regardless. Excuse the pun, but Frankie put himself in a position to be criticized, that’s it. Stays well and has a turn of foot. Solid Place claims.
Purple Moon is an interesting contender. Luca wouldn’t be wasting his time if he didn’t think the horse could do himself justice. The conditions of the race will suit and the horse obviously settles in well abroad.

OBL for me, but our horses all have place prospects at their best. Sixties Icon could prove best.

    Great race.

    November 29, 2008 (Saturday)

    FOREIGN ENTRIES-JAPAN CUP

    At Tokyo Racecourse

    PAPAL BULL (GBR, h5, bay)

-jogged 1/4 lap, walked (back stretch), cantered 1/4 lap, strongly cantered 1/4 lap, walked, on turf course
-ridden by P. Jones, from 6:40 to 6:50

“He’s very fresh, and his appetite is enormous. He drinks well and his temperature is normal. It’s unbelievable, he dug a whole in the floor of his stall last night. His exercise was very good this morning and we’re looking forward to tomorrow.”

    (Comments taken from G. Weir)

    SIXTIES ICON (GBR, h5, bay)

-jogged 1/4 lap, cantered 1/2 lap, on turf course
(ridden by M. Denaro, from 6:40 to 6:50)

“The horse looked good when he left England and he looks good now, but the Japanese horses are tough and it will be a bonus if we can beat them after going through a long season. Stall 11 is not too far wide, and from the middle in a one and a half mile race, you have time to find your position, so I’m happy with that. As long as he jumps out of the gate smoothly and can get into a comfortable rhythm….then I’ll leave it up to Johnny from there.”

    (Comments taken from J. Noseda)

    PURPLE MOON (IRE, g5, bay)

-jogged 1/4 lap, cantered 1/2 lap, on turf course
(ridden by N. Rakotoarisoa, from 6:40 to 6:50)

“He’s looking good and I’m glad that the turf is now almost “firm” at this stage. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. ”

Papal Bull looks bullish. Sir Michael Stoute once said to a Japanese trainer :’I love your county veeery much,’ smiling all over his face. When? Just after his second win in the JC with Pilsudski. Perhaps, he may repeat it again to poor Japanese trainers.
