Thanks. That makes far more sense than my imperfect recollections.
Remember the great rivalry between To-Agori-Mouu and Kings Lake over a mile in the eighties. I think they met three times, Kings Lake winning twice, and there seemed to be quite a bit of aggro. Does anyone recall the exact details?
I think it was to do with Eddery on King’s Lake bumping To-Agori-Mou in the Irish 2,000.
I can’t remember whether I felt it warranted a change of result or not but I do recall Starkey giving Eddery the ‘v’ sign after (I think) the St James’ Palace revenge.
Although there’s no doubt which of the two jockeys won the war in the end, and it wasn’t Greville Starkey. It’s sad that Starkey is most-remembered for the Derby ride on Dancing Brave (but there’s no doubt either that he made a colossal misjudgement that day, and paid dearly for it).

I hardly ever post but I’d just like to say RIP here.
I thought he was a brilliant jockey.

Yeah let’s have government by referenda. It’ll be like Big Brother, get in!

I always liked it when Destiny Angel made an appearance! Which reminds me of Parker (yes, M’lady
), who’d also qualify as a favourite character.Destiny Angel, I find, was from Captain Scarlet not Thunderbirds.

Bollocks to my shyte memory.
I can vaguely remember Torchy The Battery Boy (including the theme tune), Zoo Time, Fireball XL5 and obviously Blue Peter; those others escape me.
^^ Casey Jones, steamin’ and a rollin’! That tune is now stuck in my head
The Tomorrow People it was Aaronizeez, scary telepathic children! There was also another, earlier, sci-fi show called The Time Tunnel I remember watching. I have a feeling it was rubbish but I would have only been about six at the time so I excuse myself.Just done a bit of Googling and found dozens of shows I remember: Daktari and cock-eyed Clarence, Beatles cartoons, Jackson 5 cartoons, The Monkees, Pink Panther cartoons, The Banana Splits, Inch High Private Eye, Dastardly & Muttley, Doctor Who of course, loads more. On reflection, it strikes me that telly catered very well for us kids back then.
They were indeed ‘wunnerful’. I seem to remember Laurel & Hardy and Buster Keaton featuring regularly in Saturday morning kid’s tv (late ’60s, early ’70s). Along with Joe 90, Captain Scarlet, Stingray and Thunderbirds – I always liked it when Destiny Angel made an appearance! Which reminds me of Parker (yes, M’lady
), who’d also qualify as a favourite character.Mentioning Parker has reminded me of another favourite character from a little-known but lovely British comedy called Don’t Take It To Heart (1944). An actor called Edward Rigby plays a put-upon butler, and it’s one of the best comic film performances I’ve ever seen. A film well worth the watch if you come across it.
For the most part I can’t abide American sitcoms either but I make an exception for The Phil Silvers Show/Bilko, which was top-notch I reckon.
Moehat: the Lean film had a fairly straightforward happy ending, with Pip and Estella walking off together into the future. A bit soft really but I didn’t mind that much, the rest of it being so good.

Every week my missus would be in the kitchen and she would shout "who’s that coming in the back door" and we would shout back "we’re the Sweeney and we want our dinner"

Blimey I’d forgotten all about TRTP – I can barely remember it now but I did enjoy reading it.
^^ Miss Havisham a role model

I hope, Moe, you keep a fire extinguisher handy and don’t make a habit out of adopting young girls

I also love Dickens. If I had to pick a couple of favourite characters out of all of his fantastic creations they would be the debtor William Dorrit, and Estella from Great Expectations. I always ‘see’ Estella as a young Jean Simmons having watched Lean’s film many times. Which is no bad thing as she was perfectly cast.

Jack Regan, the hard-living hard man with a soft centre – John Thaw got that unforgettably right. I’d still call The Sweeney my favourite tv show of all time, loved it. Huggy Bear from Starsky and Hutch. I once almost ran Antonio Fargas over outside Newcastle Theatre Royal – he just looked at me and grinned
I’ll never forget Clive Francis playing the decadent Major Hedges in Potter’s Lipstick On Your Collar – the highlight of one of the best things ever done for television for my money, so full of good things. And lastly, Alexandra Bastedo playing Sharron Macready in The Champions, as I was besotted with her as a kid

Best leave it at telly as if I did film and novels as well I’d be here all day.

I’m keeping mine. I’ll cling to the hope that there are 300,000 affluent numismatists out there. I’ll strike when the ebayers run out of coins.

Lovely to see those old coins. I remember once finding a crisp ten bob note in a birthday card from my favourite auntie and feeling immensely rich (it was summer 1970, so naturally I blew most of it on a football, and packet after packet of Mexico 1970 Soccer Stars, probably in pursuit of a few obscure El Salvadorians, Uruguayans and Bulgarians).
I had an uncle who was an inveterate hoarder of old coins – he had thousands of the things, kept protectively in an old brown suitcase under his bed. I seem to remember he had several bizarrely optimistic theories about decimalisation and the potential increase in value of his cherished pile of coins.
I’ve found one of these undated 20p coins. When I saw that £5800 auction I briefly thought I might get a holiday out of it; I can’t be bothered with the hassle of working out how to sell on ebay now the going rate has fallen to about £200 (though that’s still surely way above what they’re worth).
