The trouble is Graeme those clubs are only likely to fold if and when their playboy owners tire of their plaything, remove their money and leave them with unsustainable debts/exes. The ordinary fan is powerless to do anything about these things, and these are, after all, traditional old clubs in which people have huge emotional investment.

It really doesn’t matter if a club is ‘big’, ‘small’ or whatever, when they go to the wall a lot of people get hurt through no fault of their own. The top end of PL football is a cesspit, there’s no denying it. Many ordinary fans deplore what’s going on. But your team’s your team and I could no more give mine up than chop off my arm.

Yes it would be hilarious if Newcastle United, a club of well over a century’s standing and an institution that carries real meaning and significance for the city and it’s fans, was pissed up the wall by a flash Johnny-come-lately cretin. I don’t know how people could contain their laughter.

Sky sports cliches and narrow stereotypes do not define the game of football, nor its followers for the most part.

Maybe I’m missing something here Gaz, but I appear to be on +7.60, the same as I was before a winner and a placed e/w selection on Sunday.

I only point it out because it’s likely to be the only time I ever lead this table

I rarely read sports biographies but I would put in a word for Sir Bobby Robson’s. Being a lifelong Newcastle United fan (yes, I know, we’re shyite  ) and also an admirer of Robson since his Ipswich days would be the two main reasons I read this, but I would think it’s a decent read for anyone with even a passing interest in football.

His old-fashioned standards and simple integrity come across very well and it’s full of (what I thought were) interesting anecdotes – he’s had an amazing life. One in particular stands out. He had a young beast of a footballer called Kevin Beattie at Ipswich. Now this lad was lightening quick, and somehow got entered into some FA-organised 100-yard sprint (it may have been for charity, something to do with Powderhall iirc). Bets were being struck on this, and Beattie wasn’t the favourite. Those in the know at Ipswich knew he was a certainty, and bet accordingly. About halfway through the race, with Beattie pissing it, his shorts split and his bollocks popped out. He did complete the race but he was hampered by his attempts to cover himself up, and got beat on the line

I do agree that on the whole though, most of them are probably dull as dishwater. Footballers in their early twenties are doing them these days

There’s nothing in racing I’d like to see more than Henry Cecil have a five-or-ten-year swansong winning the big races again. He really was the punters friend for those fifteen or twenty years or so when you could just about back his horses blind. And it was always a pleasure to see his post-race interviews, in which he always came across as charismatic without ever showing the slightest hint of arrogance.

    Absolute legend.
