Amir Khan’s hand-speed is frightening at times and I have long held the view that he’s capable of doing himself justice on the world stage. That said, it can’t be argued that Prescott (who, in fairness Bos, isn’t a weak puncher) asked a serious question of him – a question he failed to answer – and that the Barrera fight was little more than a farce. I am in two minds as to whether the clash of heads was entirely accidental, given the problems the Mexican has had with head cuts in the last six months, but either way Khan was effectively boxing a blind man.
If he is lined up to face an established name next time, he’s a massive lay.
March 19, 2009 at 13:30 #217296You can`t underestimate Prescott,he is well rated and a good fighter. No one is suggesting that Khan is remotely ready for Marquez or Diaz ,but if he keeps sparring and training with The Pacman and the others in this excellent Gym he has got a good chance of getting there. His hand speed is brilliant as you say,his defence is now clever and solid,we still have the problem with his chin, but he is getting there.Surprised me anyway
March 23, 2009 at 20:07 #218050How the hell did Khan manage to get a prestige fight like Barrera, on PPV as well ridiculously, whilst the man who banjoed him in less than a minute is fighting an unknown in some mickey mouse yank venue?
The fight shouldn’t have made the 5th – is it a massive coincidence that if it was stopped in the 4th there would had been no result? If this was the other way round and fought in Mexico i’m fairly sure Frank Warren would be spitting feathers about a ‘home-town’ decision.
Khan has GOT to give Prescott a rematch, hopefully in a World Title – Warren can make it happen, but i doubt he wants to take the risk.

Peruvian Chief, I have to thank you for bringing the term ‘banjoed’ in to my life – I haven’t stopped smiling since I read it

The disappointing thing, from Khan’s point of view, has to be that he had four and a half rounds of uncontested boxing and still couldn’t put Barrera away – even with blood pouring down his face and a fairly uninspiring offence, the Mexican didn’t look at all troubled by what had been thrown at him.
I think Frank Warren knows that, at this stage, Khan can’t match Prescott’s punching power and as his chin hasn’t been tested since they last met, avoiding him is probably the best option.
March 24, 2009 at 13:49 #218141Why would he want a rematch with Prescott? he was no underdog. He is ranked 10 in the ring ratings. I wouldnt go anywhere near him for a long time.Prescott will get plenty of action Plenty of easier bouts Khan can take as he developes
March 26, 2009 at 00:30 #218399If Khan gets a world title shot before Prescott, i’m never watching boxing again – thats how wound up i am about it.
Equitrack – you’ve got to enjoy a good ‘banjoing’ (without injury of course), unless you are poor old Bomber Graham…..
April 27, 2009 at 20:37 #223937Prediction time fellas !
Pacman in rounds 4-6 with Hatton’s fizzog a bloody mess, I’m saying.
April 27, 2009 at 20:48 #223943Hatton to win on points
April 27, 2009 at 20:50 #223944If Hatton boxes cleverly and throws some bombs, he has a chance, but Freddie Roach ( a very shrewd trainer ) will not hear of defeat for his man. He thinks the Pac Man is a stonewall certainty.
Who am I to argue ?

I’ve been on Pacquiao to win in either the 6th or 7th round for quite some time (see earlier post) and see no reason to change my position. Obviously I hope Hatton annihilates him, but I just can’t see it happening.
I’ll be glued to SKY Box Office nonetheless.
May 3, 2009 at 14:11 #225294Utter destruction.
Couldn’t he have held off for another two rounds ?

(Hope these don’t break any rules – I’ll take them down if they do obviously.)
May 5, 2009 at 13:33 #225753Having been away and missed it very grateful to see it. Didn`t he know Manny had a left? He left himself wide open.
May 6, 2009 at 00:17 #225863What with the passage of a day or two, I’m just taking in what Pacman has done. I fully expected him to stop RH, but not in that manner. I offer him my fullest respect, ‘n’ all………but…
……he’s just beaten Hatton by a very comprehensive KO. I expected him to defeat RH with his sheer speed, but didn’t expect him to bring such devastating power to this division. Or did he ? Hatton’s shot, we all know that, and there’s another ‘but’………
… he couldn’t KO a weight-drained and ringworn Oscar De La Hoya in his previous outing.
Now look, I bloody love Manny – he’s a force of nature and I’d back him against anyone up to 135. But if Mayweather looks like he’s still got it against Marquez , and especially if FMj drags Manny up to 147 – he’s worth opposing.

I don’t think there are many who truly thought Hatton would beat Pacquiao, but few could have predicted that it would be the Ricky of old who would be knocked out in the second. He had no defensive cover whatsoever and I can only imagine he thought he could overpower Manny in the first three or four rounds; it’s either that or he was acting in direct defiance of Mayweather Snr’s strategy.
The meeting of Pacquiao and Mayweather Jnr could be the greatest fight of our time, but assuming the latter comes out of his match against Marquez in decent shape I can’t see him putting pen to paper unless he’s sure he can win. He’ll have a more definite advantage over Pacquiao, size-wise, and he possesses the ability to avoid the shots Hatton didn’t see coming (though everyone else probably did).
In the opening rounds of his fight with Hatton, Mayweather Jnr looked as though he could be beaten. Ultimately class won through and by the time he put on Ricky on his a*se for the second time he was playing games. Technically he’s not the most gifted boxer, but as a package he’s devastating – and he can go the distance, too.
I think it would very much be a ‘bet in running’ fight, as Mayweather’s actions in the opening moments will give a clear marker of how much respect he has for Pacquiao; if he’s overly aggressive, he’s running scared and needs to end it early, if not, he’s simply biding his time. I can’t stand Mayweather Jnr as a character, I really can’t, but as a fighter he’s a class act and I’m fairly sure I’d just favour him over Pacquiao (who is, it has to be said, thoroughly likeable).
