As a newcomer, this was the first comp I have entered on here, great fun. Thanks Bully for the hard work you must have done and the time it must have taken.

A P may not have had as many winners as he would have liked, but his ride on Wichita Lineman is something that racegoers will remember for a long time.
Ruby Walsh made the point in his interviews about how lucky he felt being the retained jockey for the top trainers in both Britain and Ireland. He is a brilliant rider as well but without these connections he wouldn’t break the records he does.

A magnificent performance from one of racing’s true all-time greats, and Ruby was adamant that he is the best he’s ever ridden, which of course includes Denman and Masterminded.
It was clear from the post-race comments of connections that Denman was never going to be seriously ridden, and they were delighted he finished were he did, understandable in the circumstances but, without the advantage of soft ground, doubtful imo that he would have beaten Kauto Star today, whatever his readiness.
The hosepipe brigade might care to consider that today’s result would probably have been quite different had the ground been similar to last year, and that is the

    real

difference that over-watering makes in prejudicing some horse’s chances, and the results of even the very highest class races,
It is also plain to see now that KS wasn’t himself last year and, by the time he’d pinged the 4th fence today, it was obvious he was a much different animal to the one who had laboured around the course the previous season. Clearly, great trainer though he is, P Nicholls doesn’t always get it right.

Of course Denman was ridden seriously this year, more conservatively yes but on that ground I doubt Denman could have made a decisive break.
Even so had Kauto Star not been on the top of his form then Denman would have won. Kauto benefitted from the ground today just as Denman did last year, and if they meet again in 2010 it is likley the ground will again be a major factor.

What elevates Kauto Star to true superstar status is his abilty to win at a greater range of distances and types of course

    Cormack

    Behave yourself!
When PN has won 3 Gold Cups, 3 Champion Hurdles, a Grand National, 6 Derbys, a host of other classic winners and (as Jimbo pointed out today) 9 Gloucester Hurdles out of 12 runnings, then you might be able to talk about him in the same sentence as the legendary M V O’Brien. :)

Agreed – he has not won a National or a Champion Hurdle yet, which puts him below a few ot the others as well

No Reet Hard, that was George Bernard Shaw and some woman at a dinner party, after she agreed she’d have sex for £1million.

Lady Astor, I believe said to Churchill that he was drunk. He replied that in the morning he’d be sober, but she’d still be ugly or whatever.

Their capacity for finding a trough into which they can dip their snouts is matched only by the brassneck shown in their explanations.

Though he may get shouted down on the Morning Line, John McCririck is quite right in his position on what is happening to starting prices.

Donohue should resign and "umbly" apologise

    Hello,

Conversely you cannot lambast Nicholls, Findlay etc. for wanting the best they can afford, wouldn’t anybody??
You cannot employ anyone to do a task simply because he is a nice guy..

I type as a master of mediocrity, I am neither ashamed or proud, I just am..but I do admire people who excell at their trade, and of course I am also pleased about people who have had, shall we say, a bit of luck, or being in the right place at the right time to lift themselves from Planet Average… :)

I think you miss the point of most of the comments. There have been none that I have seen lambasting the owners for wanting the best jockey. They should choose who THEY want.

The comments that the trainer has made in public have been the main issue, and how you get the best from people you employ. Such comments have probably contributed to how Sam Thomas has ridden in the subsequent headline races and made the problem worse not better. When did you last hear Alex Ferguson criticise Ronaldo or Rooney for any individual failings – and there have been some this season?

Finally, associating mediocrity with a jockey that has won a Hennesey and a Gold Cup with little fuss is nonsense. It is one thing to be in the right place at the right time – it is another not to blow the opportunity, and its not as if there was no pressure.

I don’t rate him as a jockey who can ride well over obstacles, an opinion I’m more than entitled to.

The facts speak for themselves. No jockey with the win % that Sam Thomas gets is lacking ability. Some jockeys have a much better win %, but that is because of the ability of the horses they get. If you compare Sam Thomas and Ruby Walsh the % for falls shows precious little difference.

Nicholls was at it again last Saturday after Big Bucks had won at Cheletenham, saying that if Ruby Walsh had been on board in the Hennessy then the horse would have won.

I think Sam Thomas did little wrong, and it is far from certain Walsh would have made any difference so why go public again?

If Nicholls doesn’t think he is up to the job and replaces him that is the time to comment, if at all.

Grasshopper nails it. Derek Thompson in particular probably drives more people away from racing than he does attract people to the sport. He is definately detrimental to the sport of racing and should be sacked immediately.

    Talk about overstating your case.

Derek Thompson is a competent broadcaster, maybe not the brightest or the best, but I doubt anyone has been put off racing from seeing him onTV. As someone else has said he is to be heard on Talksport doing a good job promoting the racing for the day.

If a different type of program is needed then the editors and directors are to blame, Thompson can justifiably claim to be "following orders"

This newspaper is brilliant…the racing was rubbish this weekend but ive just spent an hour in the bath reading it front to back, races all laid out in order and cuts half the crap The Racing Post has.

    Well worth the money!!!!

    It should produce a website!

I have no objection to McCririck – he is often funny and on some important issues is worth listening to – he has a personality. Most of the others are dullards whose company in real life you would try to avoid.

For me the most astonishing thing is how little time they actually devote to previewing the day’s races which is surely the raison-d’etre of the programme.
