LORD DONOUGHUE, the well-known Labour peer who chairs the influential Starting Price Regulatory Commission, has robustly defended his position after it emerged he is working as a paid consultant for bookmaker Paddy Power, which has over 250 betting shops in Ireland and the UK, including 60 in London.

February 12, 2009 at 16:11 #209855He claims that he is paid in line with comparable consultancy work. Comparable to the likes of Truscott, Taylor, Moonie and Snape presumably.
It seems there is now a total amnesty on these corrupt Labour Lords and it’s open house for them, now that the police can’t justify the expense of investigating them.
"If anyone thinks that SPs would have greater integrity if bookmakers decided to produce their own, they should visit a doctor."
No, they should just visit any fixture on the all-weather this week. They’ll then see the big off-course bookies directly deciding the SPs as they have the casting vote in what is returned under Lord Donoghue’s framework.
He claims to have a reputation for independence. Reputations are formed by others’ opinions, they’re not self-assesments. Maybe I should start a poll to find out what reputation he really has.
February 12, 2009 at 23:41 #209923"You do not get invited to occupy senior positions if it is thought that you are up for sale.
"The idea that I could be corrupted and that, for the sake of a few thousand pounds, I would jeopardise my reputation for independence and act against the interests of the SPRC is bizarre and offensive."
How could anyone think such a thing – a person in a senior position being corruptible !!!

Has he got no understanding of the terms conflict of interest or perception.

February 13, 2009 at 02:32 #209935These people quite simply never cease to amaze me….
Why we let them waltz all over us is beyond me. This isn’t a ‘conflict’ of interest. It’s a complete nuclear armageddon.
February 13, 2009 at 05:45 #209951Their capacity for finding a trough into which they can dip their snouts is matched only by the brassneck shown in their explanations.
Though he may get shouted down on the Morning Line, John McCririck is quite right in his position on what is happening to starting prices.
Donohue should resign and "umbly" apologise
