ascot and debeers must be well miffed, they put up 750,000 in prize money for the king george and only six turn up and one of them is a pacemaker.
if i was them id slash the prize money by half and give it to the jump races in the winter where it will be more deserved.
lets hope sir percy manages to at least win another race.
apart from 2000,01,02 all the derby winners since 96 never won another race,an amazing stat seeing as the derby is ment to be flat racings biggest race.
after the triumph hurdle rough race we had this year and the sad loss of horatio nelson, connections of top horses may avoid the race all together
the last time anything like this happened was in 1996 when 10 horses died during the festival.
is it just a coincidence that the 96 festival like this one was run during very cold weather and on a course with very little grass growth?
just like rats foxes are vermin and should be treated as such.
its hard to belive that blair has wasted valueble time on this. what next.. a driving ban for splatting a fox on the road? whats the difference?
its been proven over and over again that the horses love it and return to racing fresh and revitalised.
if hunting was only done by black people would blair still want to ban it???? i think we know the answer to that one;)
look at the stick thommo gets on this forum. if he was black im sure some pompous liberal would accuse us all of being racist:biggrin:
wish i hadnt started this thread now lol. so much for free speech.
typical of this country as a whole.you express an opinion and then get wrongly accused of racism by someone with a one tracked mind and a very large chip on the shoulder.
i still stand by what i said… if we want young people to get hooked on watching racing then have horses with theses unattractive arabic names wont help.
oh my god we have political correct liberals and radio one listeners in the building:o suddenly thommo and co dont seen so bad
well at least someone agrees with me;) if the rest of the maktoum family and abdulla can stretch themselfs to give their horses decent and memorble names im sure hamden could if he tried.
AP RACING…. it apears ive upset you again sorry if i have. maybe i should intruduce myself when i see you at the races next but then again best not eh;)
guess im just a traditionlist who wants jumping in the winter flat racing in the summer and high class horses with names that will live in the mind forever.
its a very sad irony that with the owner being too scared to ever run him over the jumps and give him a chance to prove himself to be a proper champion he should perish on the flat.
its a big blow to flat racing to lose its biggist star as it slips further behind the jumps in the popularity stakes.
as someone said earlyer thank god we didnt have to witness it on tv.
classic example of how cheltenham is the be all and end all with trainers was the way FLAME CREEK was trained last season.
after winning the haydock champion hurdle trial this horse had a great racing weight in the tote gold trophy at nebury worth 100.000 but didnt run to be saved for cheltenham.
as we all know he ran badly there and in the scottish version at ayr thus ending the season with nothing. maybe it serves them right for not running at newbury
what a cracking topic;)
theres no doubt that the jump season is very different than a decade or so ago possibly for following reasons:
1.cheltenhams bigger than ever especially since ch4 has coverd it
2. aintee is so valuble now that it makes the season even more bottom heavy
3 trainers have worked out how to get horses fit at home instead of on the racecourse
4.the mild winters meen you can now plan a programme for a horse knowing youd be unlucky for a race to be abandoned rather than expecting it.
5.horses dont seem as robust now hence no class horses in handicaps anymore i dream of seeing best mate in hennessy but it will never happen.
but i do think that its unfair to single out its just a jumping problem as apart from the derby king george and the internatinal the major flat races are too not like they once were witness last years champion stakes.
all in all theres still a lot right about the jump season ( the success of the tingle creek as a grade one for example) and cant wait for those great saturdays to get going in the autumn.
its all about preferance isnt it,,,for me no matter what a flat horse achives it never even begins to compaire with what the likes of best mate give us each winter:biggrin:
you can always rely on THE RACING FORUM for balanced opinion on our great sport. shame the likes of miss balding couldnt be the same instead of behaving like a embarrising spoilt schoolgirl.
yes PERSIAN PUNCH is a remarkable horse and a very brave won but the flat racing people really should get out more ie:national hunt racing where they will see horses at least as brave and noble on show nearly every weekend;)
was great to see him win today.every time i look at him i think of what might have been if he had been allowed to be jump fences .can just imagine him in the champion chase. still its nice for flat racing to have a proper brave horse to enjoy.
well said pocket rocket sad as it was dorens pride did die enjoying what he did,,i hope im as lucky.
as usual the jumping knockers are out in force i see describing flat racing as "proper racing" blah blah but of course fail to mention the racing of immature two year olds etc or running the derby on a course that slants sideways up the home streight.
