The Split Second (Raceform) rating is a modest — on his scale — 113. That seems more plausible than Topspeed’s. But I have hopes that Sir Percy, if he stays sound (and if the jarring-up after the Guineas was not a portent), will turn out to be an above-average Derby winner. I agree with his supporters: his form looks good. And I agree with those who say that he still has a lot to prove.

Wins the Dewhurst, second in the Guineas, wins the Derby: his luck has got to run out sometime.

Would you run this horse in the Irish Derby or in the Eclipse? If connections are aiming for the Irish Derby, then we may assume that they’re thinking about the King George and the Arc; but I’m not aware of any horse managing to win those three races following the Derby, and I can think of a number that won the Derby, Irish Derby and King George and were never as good again. Mill Reef and Dancing Brave won the Derby, Eclipse, King George and Arc. Of course, Sir Percy is unlikely to be as good as they were; but if you were connected with the horse, you might prefer to attempt a feat that has at least been managed before.

Some people assume that if George Washington has any chance of staying the Derby trip, Aidan O’Brien will want to go there. But the horse might increase in value more if he wins races at a mile/10 furlongs. As AP says, the days are gone when the Derby was the most important race for a future stallion.

What are your views on Innox? He’s in good form; but will the conditions/distance of the National suit him?

I am not giving Arazi a bad press — I thought he was fantastic (and better than Hawk Wing). My point was that despite his ability, he has not won recognition as a champion, because he did not produce enough top-level performances.

Arazi put up one of the most sensational performances ever seen on a racecourse, and on his day — a phrase we hear a lot in connection with Hawk Wing — was an outstanding animal. Was he a champion? No. Hawk Wing should be seen in the same light.
