Make yourself a template, and the night before C&P the racecard and all form, jockey, trainer, pedigree info etc that you need into one column, and have a column of unfilled jockey colours in the other column, corresponding to the numbered info sections. Take coloured pencils to the track, and fill in as required?

Does that make sense to read? I know what I mean……… :?

Great horse, fantastic memories, glad they’ve stopped with him.
Have a great retirement, the Drever, you’ve more than earned it! :D

For those that have taken umbrage to my reference to muppets………did you see the documentary filmed of Monty Roberts running Shy Boy into the ground until he was so exhausted he could barely stand? Do you really think Monty Roberts continually riding fresh horses to chase the stallion until the end of his tether is horsemanship? It was one of the most saddening and sickening sights I’ve seen. But hey, look at the money it made him…..
As far as round penning goes, it is a damaging and powerful tool, essentially to dominate the horse into submission. More Stockholm syndrome than genuine bonding. I have seen horses totally messed up by the muppets that buy into this as a onesizefitsall solution with horses.
If you use this way of working on a horse that is already scared of human contact, you are likely to shut it down so far mentally that it won’t ever trust again.I’ve seen it done.
And for what its worth, I’ve spent a fair proportion of my life rehabbing horses. Including Iberian horses.
I agree about the rug for the stalls, great idea, but MR didn’t invent it, he nicked the idea from someone else and marketed it as his own.
Some of his ideas are good, and he is undoubtedly a horseman, but above all he is a businessman.
Please be very careful how you proceed with a scared horse, SL’s advice was spot on.

I expect he’s been used for bullfighting, or at least done some of the training, that would explain the body scar. The bridles the Spanish use have serrated nosebands, and scar the horses noses.
If they are useless for the job, these horses get sold for meat money through various sales in Spain and France, and there are UK dealers who import these horses from the French fattening farms, and sell on to unfortunate less experienced people for less than the normal asking price. A Spanish well bred and trained horse (upwards of £14.000 for a decent one) is a fast buck turnaround for a dealer at three grand, and a ‘bargain’ for the unwitting.
Poor bloody horse, you’ll probably need some help with him. Don’t go down the Parelli or Monty Roberts muppet route tho’, find a conventinal trainer who does rehab work, or one who breaks youngsters. Any of the racehorse retraining centres should be able point you in the right direction.
Rehabbing older damaged hoses can be tricky, so go slowly and carefully.
    Good luck. :)

Gelding will only stop the testosterone fuelled antics, not exact a personality change. If he’s nervous, that’s his character, and you’ll need to work on establishing his confidence.
Probably a lot more complicated than that tho’……….does he have any minor scarring on his face where a low noseband would have been?

I agree, gc, I had a real soft spot for the horse as he always seemed to love his job. All course fatalies are bad, but his seemed so unjust.

    1977 Red Rum
    1980 Ben Nevis
    1990 Mr Frisk
    1994 Minnehoma
    1998 Earth Summit
    1999 Bobbyjo
    2006 Numbersixvalverde
    2008 Comply or Die

And my two that got away, Ad Hoc in Bindaree’s race, and Le Coudray (at 50’s) in Amberleigh House’s race.

I love watching the front runners over these fences, such a glorious sight when they jump in rhythm. Tremallt and the Last Fling were great to watch until fate took over.

Most horses do have a natural bias to be one sided. It’s far more apparent when working them in an arena. In my experience most of them are more flexible on the left rein than the right rein. I’m not sure how much that would translate to the racecourse though, as it is not normally noticeable outwith an arena.
Various factors that cause horses to hang or jump in a specific direction are IMO teething problems, or minor pain issues, or both.
Horses don’t have the full mouth of teeth until 5 years, but trainers don’t stop training/running them if they are teething, and that can cause pain. Or they develop wolf teeth, which sit very close to where the bit lies, so a jockey being rough with his hands can cause a horse to tilt his head or run to the side away from the pain. In a stabled horse, the teeth can grow more irregularly than a horse out all the time, and they can develop hooks and spurs on the teeth that can also cause pain. Some trainers are diligent and have their horses mouths checked regularly, others don’t.
Regarding Dessie, he had well documented back problems, which I’d say were definitely contributing factors in his preference.
I’d think most horses showing a strong bias for one direction have some problem either current, or previous. The difficulty is that horses are not pushed to their limit anywhere but on a racecourse, and often any problems only show up on them when the horse’s muscles are tired and at their limit. It can also be learned behaviour, if they have carried a minor complaint for a while, they learn to avoid it by carryng themselves in a certain way, which is too established to change after a while.
Kauto Star is a very straight jumper, maybe it’s just the timing of his runs, rather than the track direction……….

I think it’s harsh on Daryl, The Listener is one of those horses that makes catastrophic blunders, and hardly seems to save himself. When it goes wrong he always jumps into the top of the fence, can’t get the landing gear out, and falls over his feet trying to stand up. I was beside the fence in the Sun Alliance when he fell with Andrew Thornton. I doubt there’s a jockey on the planet that could keep the horse on his feet when he blunders. Strange really, when he’s such an impressive jumper most of the time.
The owner is obviously fickle. :?

Wonderful horse, I remember him sluicing up at Kelso in his novice chases. A grand stamp of a horse, and so safe to watch.

    Sleep well, Jodami.
