Correct decision? Daryl must be gutted, It’s a shame for him after he’s been regular jockey to the horse for so long. Will be interesting to see if Andrew McNamara makes a difference to the horse.
January 3, 2009 at 02:09 #201137Tough on Jacob but the horse does most of his racing in Ireland and Andy Mac would have far greater experience of riding around Punchestown, Leopardstown and Down Royal.
January 3, 2009 at 02:15 #201139Given the circumstances in which he gained the ride, I don’t think he can have too many complaints. The owner comes across as a twat to ride for though.
January 3, 2009 at 02:29 #201144Since the listner does all his racing in ireland nowadays perhaps moving him to an irish trainer would make more sense instead of keep traveling back and forth.
January 3, 2009 at 03:01 #201161It’s just another example of the current "blame culture" practised by many in racing, noticeably Paul Nicholls. My horse didn’t win therefore it must be someone’s fault therefore I must make a high-profile change and tell the papers about it.
January 3, 2009 at 03:25 #201164Daryl will know the horse inside and out and find it a bit bizzare!!!!
Agree with others go the whole hog send him to a trainer in Ireland.
Jacobs is a good jockey just to many ahead of him when it comes to booking rides.
January 3, 2009 at 05:40 #201193Both horse and jockey may have been a bit unlucky with a few races, and perhaps Daryl could have stayed on a couple of times, but replacing him is a little harsh. Hopefully his confidence won’t be knocked by this.
Agree with the comments about moving him to Ireland.
January 3, 2009 at 09:12 #201203Guys only won The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup (Grade 1), The John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase (Grade 1) and Lexus Chase (Grade 1) for the owner why shouldn’t he sack him?
January 3, 2009 at 10:19 #201207Personally I think Jacob is a poor jockey who couldn’t judge pace for toffee and I’m not surprised he’s lost the ride.
I’m not really one for criticising jockeys I think they are often hammered unfairly but I just don’t rate this chap (If I owned The Listener I would jock Jacob off).
Just my opinion.
January 3, 2009 at 13:08 #201215To be honest I am not familiar with the jockey but would it have made any difference to his results had someone else rode him. Seems odd a jockey who was deemed good enough to ride him in a dozen races or so is dumped by an owner because of a fall. Wouldn’t surprise me if he lost a wad on the horse and took it out on the lad.
I looked back TL’s record just now and he has been beaten by Kauto Star twice, Denman once, Old Vic once, Taranis, Beef or Salmon and Noland.
Not a bad lot of horses to run against let alone beat.
I usually write The Listener off at first glance despite the fact having backed him once when he won in the past.
Could put Lester Piggot on him if he wants I still wouldn’t fancy him in a top class race anywhere.
January 3, 2009 at 15:20 #201230I seldom watch h`caps in Ireland but i take in all the novice hurdles/chases and significant races , from watching these i am of the opinion that McNamara won`t be much of an improvement although he`s probably a better chase jockey than he is hurdles, the ride he gave JUDGE ROY BEAN was incompetetant,on SIZING EUROPE he got their far too soon (Ignoring the fact that the horse is a bottler) and on DONT PUSH IT he was outridden by a jockey who is hardly an household name!!
With regards to Daryl Jacob, im no great fan but i think his knowledge of the horse probably won him races, i wouldn`t be tempted to change trainer as the horse isn`t the youngest and he`s probably suited by the Alners!
January 3, 2009 at 15:29 #201235Could change the owner Tony then there would be no problem
January 3, 2009 at 15:37 #201237I think it’s harsh on Daryl, The Listener is one of those horses that makes catastrophic blunders, and hardly seems to save himself. When it goes wrong he always jumps into the top of the fence, can’t get the landing gear out, and falls over his feet trying to stand up. I was beside the fence in the Sun Alliance when he fell with Andrew Thornton. I doubt there’s a jockey on the planet that could keep the horse on his feet when he blunders. Strange really, when he’s such an impressive jumper most of the time.
The owner is obviously fickle.
January 3, 2009 at 16:58 #201256Think the choice of replacement is surprising, personally would have waited till his next race and used the best available in the hope of getting Walsh, Carberry or McCoy.
January 4, 2009 at 00:06 #201356Yeats..your saying the best available…(Carberry and McCoy) that doesnt always mean the right jockey for the right horse,Me personally think that somebody like Graeme Lee or Timmy Murphy would be more suited to the horse(brilliant horsemnen who get the best out of a horse without resorting to helicopter actions with there whiphand)Just my opinion.
January 4, 2009 at 00:31 #201365Tricky one, especially in regard to how we view the owner, but roughly in his defence, I think Andrew Thornton gave the horse a criminal ride in the RSA before he fell and I’d have been livid had I been the owner. I’m not sure Daryl Jacob has done much wrong on him as such but he’s caught my eye recently for some poor rides on other horses, especially on Reve De Sivola at Chepstow recently and he wouldn’t be in my top twenty jockeys riding currently. He did pick up the ride fortuitously though and so can’t be too upset that the merry go round has moved on again.
January 4, 2009 at 01:35 #201383He wouldn’t be happy Rory that;s for sure. He is only one horse and he is surely not got long to go until these falls and the many tough races he;s had catches up with him. That doesn’t soften the blow by any means
What can hurt is if he has been close to the owner in the past. Perhaps a few bottle of champers and celebration dinners after the races he won on him. hen the same guy who was singing your praises when times were good turns his back on you.
Jockeys can also get remarkably fond of some horses and they might put on a brace face but deep down you can bet it hurst like hell.
Not getting at you here mate but we can comment on his abilities or the lack of, but I don’t think any of us know how the guys feels………
