that’s great , thanks for those two.
I owe you again so some time please let me know if I can be of any help with your "gaps"
cheers again
just checked the Sir Ivor dvd – Cox Brady’s horse was Piggott’s ride in the ’68 Oaks not the 1000 Guineas as I said.
Vaguely Noble’s colours were a very pale orange – P O’S described them as "gold" in commentary. cap looked to have some pale green but I think that’s just a blurring of the old footage.
hope that helps a bit anyway
cheersIle de Bourbon – spent ages as a kid in 1978 working out ratings for the King George VI & QE II Stakes. Came up with "I de B " as a selection at a good price and won a few pounds – now what was that system ???
thanks for what you’ve helped with ; here’s a few back that I found somehow/somewhere :-
Nimbus – Cerise & White hoops Blue slvs wWite cap (Copes 1949 Racegoers Encyclopedia)
Nebbiolo – White Red crossbelts and cap ( still got the 2000 guineas field cut out of the paper – anorak !! )
Nonoalco – Pink Grey epaulettes not sure of cap , think pink
Niksar – Red White striped slvs hooped cap
Sweet Solera – Light Blue Claret sash qtd cap
Son Of Love – Mauve Orange V slvs & cap (extract of 1979 derby runners & colours on inside cover of Peter O’Sullivans Horse Racing Heroes – info everywhere )
re James Cox Brady – on the DVD Year of Sir Ivor theres a clip of horses coming out for the 1000 Guineas and Lester is riding something in White Red hoop Black slvs Red cap – reckon that’s it . Will look again because there’s obviously footage of Vaguely Noble’s arc – colours predominantly orange but will try and clarify that for you.
cheers , appreciate the help and time taken
Gerald , your devotion to the cause humbles me.
cheers Sir.
Blimey , not on the Forum for a few hours and I see you’ve put down your handicrafts and are talking politics – good how one thing leads to another but mind you kids don’t get into trouble.
Blackbarn – thanks for the offer but I won’t bother you for the photos. Have been in contact with Weatherbys and the archivist says they have copies of all Racing Calendars back donkey’s years and that I can either go and look myself or ask that they do some research for a fee per hour – that may be the option soon as I think you folks have just about exhausted all avenues.
Drone – will try as you suggest and send a letter to a member of the current nobility ( not mentioning fascists though !! )
Gerald – the bit about discovering I had a maternal fourth granddaughter wasn’t amusing as suddenly thought I had one more Christmas present to buy ! Not happy she died though .
thanks all , enjoy reading your postings
Never know when the embroidery may come in – stick with it Gerald.
Managed to find Premonition 1953 St Leger Wilfred Wyatt
Olive & Old Gold hoops Olive cap
got Copes 1954 from ebay but no listing of colours in that edition which went down well however ……. whilst flicking through the section on leading owners these got a specific mention – only ones in the whole book !! may be tempted to get a lottery ticket and see if my luck holds.
cheers
You are all good people !
Cheers Blackbarn for your help and Gerald for the facings info. Hope people are actually enjoying trawling around looking for this info ; guess you wouldn’t do it otherwise.
Agree with Crepello that the Pathe site is great – should really watch it whilst wearing a smoking jacket and bemoaning the loss of the Empire.thanks again
Evening Crepello
I have a copy of the Benson & Hedges Book of Racing Colours that was published in 1973 and that’s helped – saw it advertised in Pacemaker magazine I think when I was a kid – £10 new then was beyond a Christmas present so had to wait 35 years and pay £40 – still , worth it. Try "googling" Raciana colours ( the web , not just uk ) and on an archive site you get colours from the 1700’s to late 1890’s – nearly cried with joy when I stumbled across that site.
Looking at cigarette cards on the iternet/ebay has helped as well as just random searches on the net.
Fascinating is one word for this – slightly obsessive are two others I’m thinking. Still , keeps me off the streets !!
cheers
Hi Gerald , thanks for still being in your thoughts. I reckon that’s after the Derby when Windsor Lad was still owned by the Maharaja of Rajpipla ( are there any Maharaja’s still around ? ) – lilac/mauve cream sash & quartered cap
On the britishpathe.com site ther’s footage of the 1934 Leger but the colours look darker and different , albeit with a quartered cap.
Have discovered that old editions of Copes Racegoers Encyclopedia detail some owners colours so are following that lead now.
regards
thanks Crepello for taking the time to find that one .
much appreciated
I must confess I hadn’t given any thought about what to do with what I managed to find , probably because I never thought I’d get this far. Apologies for the term "anorak" , I must certainly be one! Thanks for suggesting I look at another big race ( !! ) , think I need a rest from google etc to be honest.
Very helpful : I make it that you sorted the Hennessy yesterday , finishing the National now – it’ll soon be the Lincoln. Time flies when you’re having fun eh ?
Cheers Gerald , will give it a go.
Re Sir Daniel Cooper & Flair , in the Raciana list there’s a D Cooper registered from 1877 orange & white hoops white cap. Seems reasonable to assume that could be the same guy.thanks again
Thanks Gerald , feeling guilty about the time you’re spending but as I said it’s much appreciated – same to the other kind folks that are commenting. I did leave out duplicates as I thought the list more than long enough ; apologies for any confusion. That Raciana publication was a major help – if that man’s around I’d buy him a drink. I stumbled across Kistie Allsopp as well – not many can say that !!
cheers & good luck in the Hennessy
Hi Gerald
sometimes the obvious is the last thing you try – must have spent weeks going in circles and missing the following :- all I did after your comment that it "should" be easy to find was ——
"googled" – jean prat mirska colours and BINGO !!
bet the others don’t appear as easily
cheers for your help and the time you’ve spent – appreciated.
brown jacket orange sleeves white cap
cheers Gerald , you were right . Don’t know how I didn’t get that before but again , Google comes up trumps.
thanks for the prompt
Hi folks , just joined and hope I’m doing this right otherwise I’m talking to myself.
A while ago , whilst having nothing better to do , I had the daft idea of finding out the racing colours of all the classic winners there’d ever been. Being pretty sure this would lead nowhere in particular I started with the thought I’d be able to identify the past 30 years at most and then give up. God Bless the internet though !! Now I’ve got down to some 26 owners that I’m stuck on and can’t really stop being so close to finishing.
If I post a few of these am I likely to be successful do you think ? Couple to start with perhaps :-
1949 Musidora Norman Donaldson (owner)
1975 Nocturnal Spree Mrs D O’KellyCheers
