Hello All , am hoping there are some knowledgeable racing historians out there – failing that , keen racing "anoraks" are just fine by me.
A few months ago I had the daft idea of trying to find the colours carried by all classic winners there have ever been. I imagined that I’d be ok for the past 30/35 years and then be stuck and able to give up. Thank heaven for the internet !! By hook or by crook I know find myself needing only 26 owners colours and am too close to abandon the project but am struggling now.
If anyone knows any of the following I’d be happily surprised and very grateful. Year / Race / Winner / Owner
1897 Oaks Limasol 2nd Baron Hindlip
1898 2000 Disraeli Wallace Johnstone
1898 Oaks Airs and Graces W. T. Jones
1906 1000 Flair Sir Daniel Cooper
1907 Derby Orby Richard Croker
1909 Oaks Perola William Cooper
1912 Oaks Mirska Jean Prat
1921 Oaks Love in IdlenessJoseph Watson
1929 1000 Taj Mah Simon Guthmann
1934 St LegerWindsor Lad Martin H. Benson
1940 1000 Godiva 2nd Viscount Rothermere
1947 Derby Pearl Diver Baron Geoffroy de Waldner
1947 Oaks Imprudence Mrs Pierre Corbiere
1949 1000 Musidora Norman Donaldson
1949 St LegerRidge Wood Geoffrey Smith
1951 1000 Belle of All Henry Tufton
1951 2000 Ki Ming Ley On

November 13, 2009 at 21:26 #258555One would have thought it would be easy to find out Jean Prat’s colours . . .
November 14, 2009 at 12:17 #258612brown jacket orange sleeves white cap
cheers Gerald , you were right . Don’t know how I didn’t get that before but again , Google comes up trumps.
thanks for the prompt
November 14, 2009 at 14:14 #258625How the hell did you do that? I spent about an hour looking for the colours of Jean Prat, the 2nd Baron, the 2nd Visount, and the very interesting character Richard Croker.
Any chance that the colours of the 2nd Baron and 2nd Viscount would be the same as the 3rd and 4th ones? (Not that I found those ones either.)
November 14, 2009 at 14:31 #258628There is Pathe footage of Taj Mah winning the 1000 Guineas.
Light, with dark sleeves and cap.

White, with red sleeves and cap? White with blue sleeves and cap?
November 14, 2009 at 17:48 #258651Hi Gerald
sometimes the obvious is the last thing you try – must have spent weeks going in circles and missing the following :- all I did after your comment that it "should" be easy to find was ——
"googled" – jean prat mirska colours and BINGO !!
bet the others don’t appear as easily
cheers for your help and the time you’ve spent – appreciated.
November 14, 2009 at 19:17 #258670The Goulandris colours for the most recent member of the family are emerald green and royal blue halved, blue sleeves, quartered cap.
I don’t know if the Goulandris you’re looking for is the same family, but it seems highly likely and racing colours are usually passed on from generation to generation.
Those colours have been around for as long as I can remember, carried on home bred horses trained by John Dunlop amongst others.

November 14, 2009 at 19:21 #258672Well, I’ve found out that Kirstie Allsopp is a descendant of Lord Hindlip!
Also found out how you got all those Victorian colours: Raciana, by Muir.
Not sure how rich you are: you can buy the 1975 1000 Guineas racecard for £50 or £60.
November 15, 2009 at 05:57 #258704If you’ve got the colours of the 1908 1000 Guineas winner Rhodora, that might help you with the 1907 Derby winner Ormy . . .
November 15, 2009 at 06:29 #258706Deleted. Mainly his father.
November 15, 2009 at 07:21 #258707Godiva won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks?
Would he have been Viscount Rothermere at that time, with his father still alive? In the NY Times it is reported that Harmsworth’s Godiva wins the 1000 Gineas.
The first Viscount didn’t die until 26 Nov 1940.
November 15, 2009 at 07:37 #258708Not sure whether you spared giving us duplicates, or whether you’ve overlooked that Imprudence also won the Oaks [ edit: erm, 1000 Guineas].
In that case, you’ve already got it.
Otherwise, she also won the Pouliches, but a brief search hasn’t yielded anything.
I’m going to get on with finding the Hennessy winner now.

"He was a staunch supporter of the classic races, and captured the One Thousand Guineas, 1906, with Flair, a filly of his own breeding; while Flotsam carried his orange and white livery into third place in the Derby 1905, won by Rock Sand."
With a bit more effort, should be able to clarify. Owned several top-class horses in Australia in the 80s, and was elected to the Jockey Club in the 90s.

# MR WC COOPER, of Whittlebury, as one of the morning papers observes, is recognised far and wide as a sportsman of the best type, and the congratulations he has received on the brilliant victory of his filly, Perola, in the Oaks on Friday, have been many and cordial. As he has the same, initials, WC, I’m feeling fairly safe to assume that W Cooper was the brother of Sir Daniel.
November 15, 2009 at 10:39 #258727This might be a bit dodgy, as I think some horses also ran in her husband’s name, and some ran in the name of their stud, Hickory Tree.
She also owned Gorytus (out of Glad Rags).
There is a picture of the ill-fated Gorytus here.

I can’t quite see whether there is more than one colour to the body.
The best I can describe it is
yukky green, yellow and yukky green hooped sleeves, yukky green cap.November 15, 2009 at 14:56 #258770Thanks Gerald , feeling guilty about the time you’re spending but as I said it’s much appreciated – same to the other kind folks that are commenting. I did leave out duplicates as I thought the list more than long enough ; apologies for any confusion. That Raciana publication was a major help – if that man’s around I’d buy him a drink. I stumbled across Kistie Allsopp as well – not many can say that !!
cheers & good luck in the Hennessy
November 15, 2009 at 16:15 #258791To be honest Isinglass, I reckon only about half-a-dozen to a dozen people visit this Trends etc section on a regular basis. You’ll get far more replies if you post on the main horse racing section.
If has been quite fun, finding out about Tammany Hall, the Maharajah Of Rajpipla, and Benson, who also bought Nearco in 1938.
