I kind of agree with JJM in that this flat season has been "lacking something", but it’s early days, and I don’t think it was the best Guineas we’ve seen, which didn’t help. I’m sure it won’t be long in sparking into life though. I would hate to see the NH season judged on the first few weeks, it would hardly be fair would it?
Well this is it isn’t it? … early days!
Flat racing will nearly always start off slower than NH because those of us who love flat racing (I’m one) have to wait ‘n’ see a new potential superstar as the season progresses. Fans of NH already have their perennial superstars to look forward to (Kauto Star and Big Bucks being prime examples) whilst us Flat fans have to savour the moment with annual superstars (Sea The Stars) that are all too often taken away from us prematurely.
While I do like NH, there are just too many fallers and fatalities that kinda tarnish it for me.
In my opinion, Chester is the worst racecourse in the country. Even some of the horses look as though they’re suffering from disorientation as they turn into the final bend.
My prediction :-
1 Pollenator
2 Rumoosh
3 Special DutyCanford Cliffs was very solid given the difficulties in riding him quieter. He can turn the tables on Makfi @ Ascot, which will be an enthralling contest in itself.
I agree. Looking at the early stages of the race, it appeared plain obvious that Canford Cliffs wanted to do his own thing since he has a natural high-cruising speed and, perhaps, denying him from doing so may have cost him a couple of vital lengths that could’ve made the difference. Of course, this was one of those ‘trial and error’ tactics that no-one can be blamed for. I also fancy him turning the tables on Makfi (and Dick Turpin too).
If
Canford Cliffs stays the mile and settles well in behind, then I think he’ll win. I’ve just got slight doubts about him getting the mile.
At 6 furlongs on good ground, I feel that Canford Cliffs will be close to invincible.
I always feel that George Washington’s demise could/should have been avoided. If he was my horse, I’d have never let him run in those waterlogged conditions in that 2007 Breeders Cup.
Don’t worry about it Fivelongdays, it’s happened to most of us.
By the way, anyone else here who thinks that Sir Nicholas Abbey will finish out of the frame in next saturday’s 2000 Guineas? I do

Back in the early 80’s, I seem to remember Michael Stoute had a 3yo called Childown that finished (I think) second EIGHT times in a row before winning!
I remember Childown as a hurdler but he won about six in a row. I think he fell at the first fence in the triumph hurdle (ridden by John Francome) but never got up from the fall

Since the Greenham, I’m now having slight doubts about Canford Cliffs staying the mile as he looks more of a sprinter (remembering Green Desert). Having said that, yesterdays race was ran in a very fast time. However, I’m feeling more inclined to go with Elusive Pimpernel as things currently stand.
OK, there still a fair chance that Canford Cliffs, if ridden with more restraint, might last out the mile and still run a cracker but he looks more of an each-way proposition.
Elusive Pimpernel does look the one to beat and I was impressed how well he quickened when he hit the rising ground at Newmarket. If the ground is good to firm on Guineas day, this is the horse to find the cracks in St Nicholas Abbey’s armour.
Awzaan is the dark horse of the 2000.
RIP Greville.
The fact that Dancing Brave’s two races as a 2YO were at a mile suggests that the Derby seemed the obvious target for the horse. Mr Starkey knew what the horse was capable of hence his confidence. He should have ridden DB closer to the pace since Epsom is quite an unforgiving course. In my opinion, Greville got his tactics wrong.
Quite liked Coordinated Cut’s win today in the Tattersalls Timeform 3-y-o Trophy. There aren’t many horses who get hampered, have to switch and still win with just over a furlong to run. He has a splendid, long stride. Definitely a Derby horse and can see this one thundering down the home straight at Epsom.
I’m still stinging from the 1986 Epsom Derby

Liked the look of Aldovrandi at Kempton yesterday. You don’t get many newcomers popping up in fields like that and winning so convincingly. Certainly keeping my eyes on this one.
I’m fairly sure that Mon Mome can repeat last year’s success. However, my wonga will be going on Tricky Trickster instead

The One and only Son of Lyphard out of Navajo Princess by Drone!

100% agree … the wonder horse in my avatar!
Within close proximity and about to hit top gear, I do wonder how other greats such as Sea Bird, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard, etc, would’ve coped with his tremendous turn of speed.
I got 5 out of 6 today at Wolverhampton. Second Brook was the lead-footed mule that let me down in the last race.
Bugger!
