First of all each horse race has to be treated as such and therefor when pricing up a race to your system/critea’s you have to take all the horses into account.
A simple example is the 2.50 at Doncater today.
Say your system is very simple (the way you come to your selection) for example = to use Post Mark in the RP as your ratings and you additionally award 5pts per course winner and 7pts per distance winner.
The race then becomes rated by you to your system as follows:
Zabadi (pm133) (dist7) = 140<br>Virtous Circle (pm134) = 134<br>Dream of Numari (139) = 139<br>Passereau (pm132) = 132
These figures are clearly too close together and too high to produce an acurate book so we should take 100 off each competitor to show market differences.
As the top rated horse is 40 (after 100 deducted) this becomes the figure you divide all ratings by as the top rated will return a figure of 1 then.
You now have these figures now assigned:
Zabadi = 1<br>Virtous Circle = 0.85<br>Dream of Numari = 0.975<br>Passereau = 0.8
Now add all these up and lets call it A which equals 3.625
Still with me or have you dropped off yet? :bore:
So now all you do is calculate the percent for each horse which is 100 [divided by] A [times] chance:
Zabadi 100 / A X 1 = 27.6% (5/2)<br>Virtous Circle 100 / A X 0.85 = 23.4% (100/30)<br>Dream of Numari 100 / A X 0.975 = 26.9% (11-4)<br>Passereau 100 / A X 0.8 = 22% (7-2)
Now if you look at the RP forcast betting you will see:<br>5/2 Dream of Numari, 11/4 Paaereau, Zabadi, 3-1 Virtous Circle.
As you can see it’s not a million miles away from the actual betting and if this were your system nothing would jump out at you as value.

Why would I back a horse in a race that I fancy which I feel should be 6/1 and it’s priced up at 2/1? Answer = I wouldn’t, because I feel it’s odds percent are less than its real chance and I know that if I backed these types long term I would lose as EVERYONE has losing runs and you have to have structures in place to be prepared for them and backing non-value horses will make losing runs considerably worse. ‘A winner is a winner’ is a quote I don’t believe in is complete tosh, it’s easy to be wise after an event but if you seek value you have to be prepared to miss winners but just think of all the bad value bets that lost and wait patiently for the next one. I don’t have consistent runs or a high strike rate good enough, but I do know what my capabilities are, which is where most fall as they try and pick things they are not capable off, so I allow for them by backing value. A prime example was during the last few months of the flat season I was putting up my bets in the ‘Betting Tips’ forum once I placed my bets and of course you have to work these out to SP in that forum for fairness. After 100 bets I was +9pts up but upon checking my betting records on the prices I actually took I was +21.5pts up! Therefor the value aspect returned an extra 12.5% on my returns! I think that figure alone shows you how important value is?
My way of pricing a book is similar to Mr Hatton’s as I award points on top of the speed figure ratings (flat only) and then the higest rated becomes the figure to divide the others by, so the top rated is always 1 and the rest are lower and then I do exactly the same thereafter execpt I work to a 90% book.

Odds compilers/tissue price creators have their methods of pricing up a race which generally takes a most of things into account, but when creating a book it should be done using the aspects of critea you think are key to the horses success (your method) as I mainly use stopwatch times, trainer form, going, distance & draw biases which are only a small part of how odds compilers come to their conclusions. This means that when I produce a book 9/10 it is considerably different to the tissue and should I have a selection in the race I think has an outstanding chance I will punt it if it’s 2pts or more over priced to my book, if it isn’t then I will leave it (yes Esc, I will leave it!) and should it win I will strug my shoulders and look for the next one as betting to what I consider not value will not give me the edge long-term.<br>Lets say your average win price is 4/1 and during an average run you have one winner in every 4 punted (same strike rate as price percent) which over 40 bets would leave you dead level assumming your stakes are even. Now lets assume 20 of these bets were ‘not value’ in the selctors book. We now have less bets and less winners but if you got 6/1 on the winners you would be +10pts profit now!<br>It’s all about opinions but I know from personal experiences that these value selections have put me in profit in times when I’m just have an average time of it.<br>The key to success is quite simple really in maths form whether you look for value or not – your strike rate % has to be higher than the odds % you punt too! Sounds simple but thats the bottom line, now all you have to do is implement it which is the hard part!

This is the concept that makes most people lose as I never ‘got it’ until somone pointed the obvious to me that my aims were too high and I would ALWAYS fail long term.
I now aim for between 5-20pts profit per 100pts staked which sounds low but if I can continue to add these mounts eventually (as my bank builds) 5-20pts will be a lot of money.
To be serious you have to leave the greed behind.
Mine would have to be the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup as these races create the most debate on here.
There are some systems that cannot be tested very easily without having a copy of a racing post for the however many years. Take for instance my repeat winner system, I have a database of all results stretching back 5 years but I cannot test for these without physically checking every result manually and as you can imagine that could takes years in the few minutes I get spare and I wouldn’t imagine the program that checks all pass performance can check for this either – so some systems have to be trial and error!

I think the different systems within this forum answer that question for you – I think Keith the Teeth hit the nail on the head when he said ‘some systems work for a while’ but if it were common knowledge of a guarenteed system known by the public then those system selections would all be favorites.
Mr E. The system top 10 is something I’m trying to throw together for future and further enhancement of this forum category. The top 10 was thrown together in minutes and requires a bit of research, but it’s something I just needed to upload so it keeps reminding me that I need to do it. Appologies if the data is incorrect at the moment.
I do have little spare time so it is going to take me a while to get it right so if anyone wants to help with this new feature it will be gladly recieved by me.
