I notice that a few days ago Jacob Rees-Mogg opined: “In the next few years we may face a war. And if we face a war, we will need people who will join the armed services and who will go out and do their duty…people have to die to save their country as they did in the First and Second World Wars.” (my italics).
This lot never give up. I am convinced our political class actively wants a war with Russia. I expect it is pencilled in for around 2027.
It makes me think of the scene in “Duck Soup”, where a diplomat says he is willing to do anything to prevent the war and the great Groucho Marx replies “It’s too late. I’ve already paid a month’s rent on the battlefield.”
Anyway, Rees Mogg’s eldest son is now 19, so I assume he will be answering the call and getting measured up for his uniform and tin hat when the time comes.
When Somerset needed a result, was it really a good idea to prepare a pitch where Surrey scored 422 and Somerset have scored nearly 700?
Warwickshire win the title.
I agree it will rumble on for years.
I am not sure about stripping the titles. I recognise there is an argument in favour – and I recall this punishment was handed out to Juventus, so there is a sort of precedent.
But do the other teams want to “win” a title something like ten years after the event? It would be a hollow victory. And sport is about celebrating a win in the here and now.
Front page of today’s edition of “The Guardian”. Considered to be headline news. Unless the Grauniad’s sub editors have moved the sports pages to the front..
I thought it was a news item as much as a sports story. It was the lead news item on several sites yesterday and is on the front page of some of today’s newspapers.
If the mods want to move it, then OK. But there is already a thread in the Lounge about the England cricket team, so sporting matters are discussed here.
Warwickshire have secured the six bonus points, so only a draw is required for the title to be heading to Edgbaston.
Watched Emilio Gay compile a quality century at Old Trafford. If only Lancashire had someone who can bat half as well as him!
Agree with Mr Walton and Oscar. My understanding has always been if your antepost selection is declared on the day but is balloted out, the stake is refunded. On the basis that the horse’s connections clearly intended the horse to run.
It is something of a grey area, like the rules about reserves.
“Whing for Southport, your doomed CAS.”
Calum McIntyre, formerly at Chester, has been mentioned now. That wouldn’t be a bad appointment but I doubt it will happen.
Away to Garstang tomorrow in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy is next up, followed by bottom of the table Spennymoor at Haig Avenue on Saturday. A match which is already looking like a must win.
Oklahoma, 6th out of 7 at Listowel today.
No doubt Mike cashed out for the full amount afterwards.
He was top class, had a great racing career and it sounds like a good retirement as well.
On RTV, Gary O’Brien said the horse raised Paul Townend’s profile (he won a few times on him when Walsh was injured). I believe Hurricane Fly took Willie Mullins to another level as well.
Mullins was a successful trainer before the Fly – but the dominant empire he has established began with him. He won 22 Grade 1s and really put Mullins on the map.
It is sad to lose two great hurdlers – Hurricane Fly and Big Bucks – within a few weeks of each other. But they both had good lives and have left us with plenty to remember.
Southport and South Liverpool both out of the FA Cup.
I was going to say the Wembley Dream is over for another season but there is still the Trophy and the Vase..
Some posters on Port Chat have suggested Whing for the vacant manager post at Southport. I hope they are joking.
Warwickshire assume top position in the County Championship. A win, or a draw with six bonus points, will secure the title.
Another defeat for Lancashire. And with Gloucestershire escaping with a draw, nine wickets down when the rain arrived, there is a good chance Lancashire will finish in last place for the first time.
The mutinous mood of the membership and several ex-players is not likely to have got any better.
“It has to be said, like other racing presenters and pundits that Nick is on the payroll of bookmakers (William Hill) and could have a conflict of interest”.
This is my main issue with racing presenters. Plenty of them take money from bookmakers. As such, they are compromised and have a direct financial interest in punters losing.
It is so obviously wrong, as is racing stables being sponsored by bookmakers. But I don’t expect anyone in racing will recognise it.
About 10 years ago, there was a short lived paper named Racing Plus. It had the racecards, a few pages of tipping and was only about half the price of the Post.
It wasn’t bad but it didn’t last long. I don’t believe there is a market for it nowadays when most people can access the information they need online.
