Firstly there must be a caveat for those who vote here for those who attend the meeting for all four days (votes should count as double) and those who sit in the warmth of their armchairs – sorry but the latter are not entitled to the one man one vote mantra.

Second of all we are stuck with the four day meeting whether we like it or not – and now the races are in the book we have to live with it.

However as mentioned earlier it is the running order idea that gives people the option to stay on for the final day if they so wish that I would most like Mr Gillespie et al to reconsider.

I would like to return roughly to the old three day running order and on the Friday as follows

    Tuesday

    Sup Nov
Arkle
Ch Hurdle
Will Hill
Kim Muir
Pertemps

    Wed

    RSA Nov
RSA Nov
QM
Coral Cup
NH Chase
Bumper

    Thurs

    Triumph
Stayers
Gold Cup
Foxhunters
Grand Annual
Racing Post Plate

    Fri

    The 4 y old handicap
The 3 mile novice hurdle
A new championship 2m 5 novice chase (replace Jewson)
The Ryanair (upgrade to Grade 1)
Cross Country Chase
County Hurdle
Now I know this may not be everybody’s cup of tea but I reckon as a solution it might work – i would be interested in others thoughts

Best from Singapore – do you know a Festival visitor who travelled further??

Without Question the opening day of the Festival is without equal, the nervous release of anticipation, the optimism and the feeling like you are stepping on a roller coaster

    Flat -Melbourne |Cup

Worst -Royal Ascot – Stratford before Festival

An wonderful horse – a beautiful jumper of a fence – it was a pleasure to have seen him in the flesh

I was never a huge fan of connections however they did not deserve this end

    A sad day all round
indeed rory your first visit to prestbury park did have certain evangelical overtones – a la Mecca or Lourdes or Tibet maybe
Cheltenham but for reasons that the divine has put togther not man meaning that the facilities suck and the management seemingly don’t care but the stunning natural vista is beautiful

Sandown – having clambered over the Railways a few times my favourite outside of the hallowed turf in the Cotswolds

    Whoa Whoa hold on there

At the risk of getting sentimental and misty eyed about the Festival – i feel the need to balance the books somewhat.

Ok the facilities are lacking and it is over priced – but for me it is the now four best days of my year without question and the best and bravest horses in the world plus the unrivalled atmosphere is worth every penny
Also people have to be realis that Cheltenham is the RHT flagship and the Festival in essence provides the financial backing required to ensure that other RHT racecourses actually survive –

Hi there I moved to Singapore from the UK a few mlonths back and feel the need to balance the books here a little

My cost of entry even to the hospitality areas is about £7 – buffet lunch – glass fronted table

However the annoying thing is watching the horse you backed at value tumbling in price before the off – which impacts on my ability to get a better return on my investment which impacts my entertainment. This component allied to the much higher quality of racing mfeeling is that this is the difference between the books option and the PMU option. Why cant I pay for the pleasure of punting with the books if I want- equally why cant we get away with the class linked enclosures at uk races and charge everybody entry fee of x dependant on enclosure type and if you want to bet with the books you pay an additional y – seems best policy to me.

Don’;t agree with this at all

Question mark against Fallon for going way too soon and challenging PP on his inside – close proximity asked for a fight, had Fallon held on to his horse a little longer and challenged wide – different result I am afraid

Which west country spoke to your friend ?

Please Ian you really should name your sources otherwise this becomes all hearsay and supposition was it Wales, Ireland or maybe the U.S

As a former racing journalist and champion of the role of the editor you have left yourself open for some gentle ribbing here

My father had a horse with M Pipe in 1990 called Our Tinker which ran I think three times for Pipe who subsequently said it was not very good and it was promptly sold – horse left yard – did not run again – nothing sinister – horse just not very fast

As far as I am aware L Lungo adopts a very similar spartan approach when it comes to separating the wheat from the chaff.

Pipe does have long term owners in Ennis, Weedon, Kilpatrick and the Archers – it is hard to think that any them would knowingly send their horses to be mistreated

    BB

1995 I believe was the year in question and you are right it was an unbelievable debacle with poor crowds and no atmosphere to speak of with some pretty tame fare on offer – I recall having a bundle on Cab on Target – which was chinned

However your sentiments re the Queens I would have to take issue – it is a mere imitation of bygone days of glory – the old restaurant (home to many an epic card school) to the right as one walks in the main door is now a bar – and a ropey one at that

The residents bar now closes at 2 in the morning and always runs out of drink – no BB I think if I had the option I would be checking into the Cheltenham Park or the Golden Valley

alsoran my definition of connections referred to trainers/lads/lasses.I should have made that clearer

Those who buy a horse are in my opinion more likely to punt on it but not to top up incomes but out of blind loyalty.

Those who buy horses know that it is an expensive hobby and should be viewed as an income write off not potential income gain.

Some have attacked my posting as being arrogant – it is not it is based on fact witnessed by my own eyes and in reference to betting patterns both on and of course

The question is whether racing is bent not to the varying degrees of comparisons with other jurisdictions or other sports it is just whether it is or not.

I may add as a racing fanatic it is with some major dissapointment that my post is as negative as it on first reading appears

The difficulty is that we have a sport that is poorly funded and conections are obliged to "top up incomes" from betting revenues _FACT

Further we have in the majority of races a supposedly fair system called handicaps gving each animal a fair crack of the whip. But this is the precisely the area which is rife with abuse

As someone one said you cannot be a little pregnant – hence in response to the question is racing is bent my honest belief is yes
