The bedlam that is Cheltenham has yet to start and we’ve already had the first European 2yo race of the season won by Clecame at Saint Cloud on Saturday. A daughter of Slickly who’s looking a good stallion for his fee.

If they were stupid enough to send three mares to a first season sire then it serves them right.

One of the points a breeder has to take in to consideration when sending a mare to a new stallion is that he is unproven in every way. If he fails to fire then tough s**t

If you pay by direct debit it’s still £70 and worth every penny. As a record of the season it is unbeatable.

For the quality of racing it has to be Royal Ascot. I agree completely with tdk; the advantage it has over it’s NH equivalent is that it is both a mid season championship event and a spring board to others later in the season.

From a racegoer’s point of view, especially one that wants to see the horses and not the poseurs, it is a nightmare so I’ve voted for the July Cup meeting, which is relaxed, informal and has an abundance of top class racing.

I fully respect that this is all down to opinion but if this was a vote for the worst, Aintree would get my nomination without any hesitation.

    Good thread.

James321’s list is interesting but doesn’t give the whole picture. How many of the sires that have nil winners on heavy, have had more than a handful of runners? All statistics are there to be broken.

I was nearly sacked because of the 1989 Derby. Still run on a Wednesday at that time, I made an excuse about going to see a client, but drove a half mile up the road to the nearest bookmakers and watched the race in there. Unbeknown to me, I was spotted and hauled up in front of my boss on my return. Backed Cacoethes too so it was bad day all round.

The best finish was 1997, as Aidan has said.

Best from a betting point of view was Slip Anchor. I had my biggest bet at that time on him, and listened to it down the telephone with my partner holding the receiver up to the TV.

A very similar story to that of Desert King, who is another son of Danehill, inbred 3×3 to Northern Dancer. It hasn’t stopped him getting 100+ mares a year but it’s debatable as to what sort of quality they are and worringly, there have been a number of mares sent to him that are by other sons of Danzig making them 3×3 to Danzig & 4x4x4 to Northern Dancer.

It’s early days yet with sons of Danehill at stud, but Desert King and Danehill Dancer both had Group 1 winners this season, and the Aussie stallions like Danzero and Flying Spur have been hugely successful down under.
