That Dewhurst was one of the few times ive been gripped to the television with excitement by a flat race. Its a shame they won’t be renewing rivalry in the guineas.
March 10, 2007 at 16:30 #43014I assume you lot probably watch Racing UK but they did it on Channel 4 as breaking news and just said that he would "miss the 2000 Guineas". This doesn’t necessarily mean he is retired surely?
March 10, 2007 at 17:43 #43015george washington is infertile so HRE has taken his place at stud which is crap news for those who have backed him ante post
March 10, 2007 at 17:49 #43016Amazing news really. Let’s get George Washington gelded then and see how good he really is
March 10, 2007 at 17:50 #43017So far the only news is he’s out of the 2000, but I heard a similar story to newyork…

Well it makes sense doesnt it? He probably hasnt developed much, wouldnt stand much chance of increasing his stud value. Top class flat racing…You gotta love it. Roll on the Autumn.

March 10, 2007 at 18:02 #43019Seemingly definitely retired to stud. Weird! Must be more to it…
March 10, 2007 at 19:39 #43020Such a shame for everyone who backed him for the Guineas, and the O’Brien team must be gutted. I can understand the stud needing a replacement – at this stage in the season it is too late to swap coverings to other existing stallions on the roster, all the obvious contenders like Danehill Dancer and Oratorio would be fully booked, and I can’t see some breeders being happy to swap to some of the lesser Danehills.
To be completely honest, if my mare was booked to George and switched to HRE I would be delighted – HRE has a far better stallion’s pedigree.
To diagnose a problem with George this early in the season it must be serious – his first set of coverings would only just be coming back into season and it is very early to tell that they are not in foal. Suggests impotence rather than infertility. Would love to see him back on the track – maybe Aidan would be happy with the swap?
As for HRE, there is no real reason why he can’t cover George’s book, go back into training and be racing again in July (unless of course George was already booked to shuttle). Doesn’t help the antepost voucher holders though.
March 10, 2007 at 19:45 #43021Do you think the decision to replace him with HRE suggests a lack of confidence in HRE guineas chances at all from Coolmore?
March 10, 2007 at 19:45 #43022Once Cheltenham was over I was looking forward to the start of the turf flat season- fast young horses etc.
This news reinforces my cynicism over colts being packed off to stud with indecent haste due to financial reasons. This has happened with several classic winners, but an uninjured horse that never raced at 3?
It certainly had plenty to prove in terms of its ability to train on- that may be a reason.
Thought we were moving away from this kind of thing with rivals Godolphin keeping older horses in training.
Agree that George Washington should be cut and returned to training.
March 10, 2007 at 20:10 #43023
I hadn’t backed him for anything but as a massive fan of the sport it’s just ridiculous that HRE has been packed off to stud.
Coolmore seem to run their business as though they can only just put the bread on the table. If HRE raced on they would hardly go out of business so it’s sad really.
I think that it’s clear to see what Aidan O’Brien thinks judging by his comments on the RP site.
Having said all of this, I would just love to see GW make a return!
March 10, 2007 at 20:15 #43024Ok Paul and Lingfield….your John Magnier…what would you tell the 100 breeders who have booked your stallion for the up coming season to do? As Sal says Danehill Dancer and Oratario and co will all be booked up at this stage…so what would you do…tell them to p**s
off?March 10, 2007 at 20:22 #43025If what’s been reported is true, then it’s a deplorable decision.
The Coolmore gang need to take a long look at themselves, rather than spending all their time counting their money. They should realise that they have a big responsibility towards the sport that’s made them so wealthy.

Any responsibilities to the breeders Ven? What would you have done?
March 10, 2007 at 20:40 #43027This unfortunate situation will have happened and been resolved before.
Will HRE be acceptable as a substitute to GW to all the breeders involved bearing in mind he never raced in the classic generation, let alone won one, and will be best remembered for being beaten by Teofilio?.
That said, I’m sure most of the breeders won’t want to upset Magnier
March 10, 2007 at 20:53 #43028
Aidan,
The breeders will obviously be very disappointed but they should just accept what is a very unfortunate situation with GW.
Personally I think that Aidan Docherty should have a look at GW, see if he can he do anything….
March 10, 2007 at 20:57 #43029I find this decision incredible and it isn’t good for the sport.
Can’t believe what I’m reading to be honest. Got an ante post on Dutch Art for the Guineas so its one out of the way but its a decision that disgusts me to be honest.
