On behalf of the forum members @ UpInClass Racing Forum (USA),
I wish extend my deepest sympathy to Darren’s family and friends…
Mr. Tyquin was kind to share his spirit and passion for horse racing
with us… and we appreciated his excitement and love for the game!

The following is a 2005 interview
posted on our website in the United States:
    —————————————————————————————————

2005 Melbourne Cup Thread Interview With Darren Tyquin

    October 5 2005

This week we are talking with Darren Tyquin
one of New Zealand’s and Australia’s leading Racecallers.
Darren’s, colourful race calls are enjoyed by millions of punters around the globe
and is one of our favourite people here on UIC.

Darren, it is our pleasure to talk with you today
for our 2005 UIC Melbourne Cup Page and you are a cool person for doing this.

What does the Melbourne Cup mean to you?

It’s the race that stops the nations..The great race.
For spectacle and theatre there isn’t a race like it in the world.
It’s been part of my history as long as I can remember.

Will you be a part of the 2005 Melbourne Cup?

It will depend on what Radio Trackside decides to do for it’s Cup coverage,
    but yes I will play a role…

What’s your favourite Melbourne Cup memory?

Working for 3UZ in 1983 as John Russell’s assistant on race day.
John’s call of the race was faultless and Kiwi’s win breathtaking.

Who is your early selection to win the 2005 Melbourne Cup?

I have two.. Kitten’s Joy and Xcellent.

What do you remember about your first horse racing experience?

Listening to Bill Collins calling the Melbourne races on 3DB.

    Who is/was your role model?

Bill Collins. The world is a lesser place with his early retirement
from race calling and his premature death.

What is your racing career highlight thus far?

Calling Popular Alm to win the Gr1 Winfield Cup at Moonee Valley
and calling the Gr1 Breeders Stakes at Te Aroha.

Do you have a pre race day ritual or routine?

    Early to bed.

Who is your favourite race horse?

Manikato, Kingston Town and Bonecrusher in a triple Dead Heat..
Hoping Xcellent can join that illustrious list.

What’s your goal for the 2005/2006 horse racing season?

I’m always seeking to become a better race caller and a better radio broadcaster.
I set myself high targets and expect to achieve them.

What’s the best thing about horse racing?

    Without a doubt the people.
Racing people, young or old or in between are awesome and it’s been my privilege to meet many.

If you had three wishes what would you wish for?

An end to terrorism. Harmony throughout the entire world and that The Good Lord
would give me a dream with a million dollar pick six result… In advance of course.

Who is your funniest mate in horse racing?

George Simon, especially at 3am after our annual racecallers day.

    What charity do you support?

I believe in supporting missionaries and ministries that preach The Gospel of Jesus Christ.

What female celebrity would you most like to meet?

Paris Hilton.. I don’t find her that attractive
but I think she would have an awesome personality
and would be a big plus at our annual racecallers day.. hehe..

    Who is your sporting hero?

Martina Navratilova would have to be
the greatest female athlete I’ve ever seen in my lifetime
and Roy Higgins the greatest jockey.

    Your favourite TV show?

Dallas and I’ve been addicted to Days Of Our Lives all my life…

The best sporting event you have attended?

The Melbourne Cup and the Australian Open tennis woman’s final in 1982
when played at Kooyong on grass between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evett Lloyd.

What is your interest away from horse racing?

As you know I’m a Christian minister and preach and speak at a lot of different functions..
I particularly enjoy speaking and sharing my testimony at Full Gospel Businessmen’s meetings..
A great group of guys that are switched on to God and want to see good ethics take place
    in the business community.

    Your favourite drink and food?

A really good flat white coffee,
    failing that a Crown Larger..
You just can’t beat a tender rump steak…

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

That we will know when JESUS returns..

What is your motto on life?

I give The Lord Jesus Christ No1 place in my life…
My wife No2… Racing No3… And I find I get looked after very well.

What is your Website address for international horse racing people to contact you?

    http://www.trackannouncer.com is my racing Website
and http://www.roseofsharon.co.nz is our ministry Website.

Darren, thank you very much for talking with us today.
    —————————————————————————————————

    Rest In Peace.
