Indeed, probably manage a few pirouettes on the way down.
Bit surprised how many people were there, probably just my ignorance, but surely Real must win that cup on a regular basis?
Edit: Not won it since 1993 apparently.
On the one hand, David Cameron wants us to vote no. On the other, Nick Clegg would like us to vote yes. As there doesn’t appear to be any way to ensure that they both lose, this puts me in a dilemma. I might actually have to vote based on the facts.
Has anyone made up their mind yet?
Notts County look safe now after beating Swindon, their next game against Brentford should see them over the line, although they finish off with tricky fixtures against Brighton and a trip to Milton Keynes. Some discrepancy in the odds. Corals have them 11-4 to go down, whilst a couple of others are 16-1.
Remaining fixtures for the other three:
Dagenham & Redbridge (currently on 44 pts)
Away Huddersfield
Home Carlisle
Away PeterboroughWalsall (44 pts)
Away Oldham
Home Charlton
Away SouthamptonBristol Rovers (44 pts)
Away Bournemouth
Home Sheff Wed
Away ColchesterDagenham will do well to get anything from trips to Huddersfield and Peterborough, but they should be able to turn over Carlisle at home, leaving them on 47.
Bristol Rovers are likely to come back with nothing from Bournemouth, but they ought to be able to overcome Sheff Wed as the Owls are nothing special and a point at Colchester is not out of the question. I reckon they can get to 48. But their GD is shocking.
Which leaves Walsall. A point at Oldham is the best we can hope for and even if Southampton are in party mood, can’t see us getting anything down there. We can beat Charlton, who have nothing to play for. We are capable of 48.
So that’s simple then. After my rigorous scientific analysis I can confidently predict that it is Bristol R and D & R to go down with Swindon and Plymouth. D&R are currently outside the drop zone and are available at 1.5 with Bet365 or 1.71 on Betfair.
Instead the authorities should concentrate on correcting the lies and misinformation that this well organised group of bigots feed to their sympathisers in the media.
Any student of history will be familiar with Goebbels theory of ‘The Big Lie’ and how successful it can be. We under estimate Animal Aid at our peril.
Spot on. If the National, NH and ultimately Flat racing is to survive, the battle will be won on the field of public opinion and here a good soundbite is the best weapon.
Plenty of time left though. Last year it was the competition no-one wanted to win, perhaps the bad start will shake them up a bit.
Saw Thomas in the Pune’s first IPL game, he opened the bowling with Parnell, looked v.good.
And on the subject of the IPL, I think people can still make a profit in the match odds markets by automatically backing the bigger priced team. The logic being that all these teams are full of match-winners and T20 is a lottery. We’ll see how it goes.
Today it’s Delhi v Punjab and even if you attempt to go on ‘form’ I have no idea why Delhi are favourites. Bottom of the table, weaker squad than most, ordinary captain.
I backed Punjab to win the thing, along with Kochi, which they probably won’t, but they are 2.3 on the exchanges and should be backed at that price.
Nathan, I logged onto Cricinfo today and was shocked to find this headline:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2011/content/current/story/512262.html
Has the world gone mad?
The best forum? Of course it is, don’t be silly.
If there is a better forum out there, I haven’t seen it. I barely knew one end of a horse from the other when I joined, but I found the natives hereabouts were friendly and over the years I’ve learned a great deal from them (for example, I’m now fairly sure that the end with the teeth is the front).
Long may TRF continue.
March 6, 2011 at 20:48 in reply to: Speed Sensing Equipment to be carried by runners in Guineas #343532I think Turftrax are involved again and sectional timing will be part of the British Champions Series.
Don’t entirely buy the tired and jaded argument. I haven’t heard Australians complaining, nor for that matter the Pakistanis and New Zealanders, who also played a Test/T20/ODI series at the same time as England.
Memorable day’s cricket on Wednesday, very entertaining. O’Brien’s reply to Anderson’s feeble sledging (by smashing him out of the ground) was particularly memorable.
Then again, excellent scrap by England today. Enjoying the World Cup for a change.
Regionalisation of domestic cricket would be worth a try I think, perhaps as another tier between county and international. Big change is coming either way, the current county set up is unsustainable and more significantly, the counties are falling out amongst themselves.
Just goes to show how bad Div Two is! I confidently predict Worcester will be back next year. The lack of funds will see to that. They need to get Shakib again (and Moeen obviously)
Commiserations Nathan, Somerset deserved more than that out of the season. They’ve played some good cricket this year and they’ll surely win something next.
As Alan suggested earlier, these bets would most likely have been placed with bookies in South Asia, where bookmaking is illegal. I haven’t come across any such betting opportunities with bookies in the UK and I would imagine they aren’t allowed to offer them, given that the time and number of no-balls, like throw-ins in football, can be so easily manipulated.
It is a good question, why are the police investigating the potential defrauding of bookmakers who are based overseas and are themselves outside the law? I don’t know, but to the extent that it is adding extra heat to the issue, I am glad they are. Hopefully there will be tough action taken this time.
Three players involved in match fixing?
A Test match thrown in Sydney?
Asian Cup shenanigans?
Captains forced out because they didn’t like what was going on?
Life bans all round?Just another day in Pakistan cricket.
It’s deja vu all over again
Thrilling game, the tension at the end was near unbearable, especially when they had to mark out the lines at either end. Just seemed that Somerset weren’t quite themselves, perhaps 95%. Pollard’s injury could well have been the difference
You’re absolutely right, Nathan, that had passed me by entirely, I think I must have assumed that the usual bluster from the ECB would be short-lived.
Maybe we are still in transition and there are still many at counties like Notts who regard the Championship as the pinnacle. I think the younger players will take a different view.
There was a similar picture a year or two back of the Sussex team on an open-top bus parade along the seafront – to the complete indifference of commuters and shoppers.
And whereas the original limited overs competitions were reluctantly-adopted money-making formats to enable the perennially bankrupt counties to stagger on for another decade or two, T20 Indian style has the potential to subvert the entire game. A good performance in the FPT Final could land you an IPL contract and money will always trump glory.
In all seriousness, I have the impression that most players would prefer to win the T20 (and a place in the Champions League) than the C.Championship.
Walk in the park for Somerset, very impressive win and with Pollard to come back, they must surely have a great chance.
Naturally, I got 3/4 of the semi-finalists wrong, the 2nd Test in Colombo is heading for a draw and Jayawardene managed 163 but still didn’t top score.
Have backed Jamaica to beat Trinidad today as the Yardies looked more convincing in disposing of Canada and the Leeward Islands (who almost gave T&T a shock). Also backed Pakistan at 4.2, with England absurdly odds on. I think Pakistan’s attack is the equal of ours, in the conditions.
