Amazing victory for Ireland as they chase down England’s 327 with 5 balls and 3 wickets in hand.

March 3, 2011 at 00:08 #343018Hi Colin,
I was going to write about this game, but you beat me to it (frankly, I’m glad as I’m busy speaking to teenagers on UK chatbox).
I thought it was a superb performance from Ireland – I did not think they could ever win it, esp not at 111 – 5.
I wonder what odds they were on Betfair at that point and at the beginning?
Kevin O’Brien played an innings of a lifetime.
I didn’t think Eng could win this competition as Morgan was too big a miss. Broad obviously was not 100%.
I found Ireland’s victory quite emotional even so I’m English.
Well done to them!
On another note – who do you think will win it? I think Sri-Lanka (still 9/2).
I’ve had a fiver E/W on Sangakkara to top bat. We’ll see.

March 3, 2011 at 06:43 #343028I’ve read that they were backed at 400/1 at some stage.
Who will win it?
Don’t know to be honest, I don’t think any of the teams are the complete package.
India probably best batting side but their bowling is a bit pants.
I can’t believe Australia can win it with the side they have.
Sri Lanka are surely past their sell-by date.
If England could recapture their Ashes form they would be favourites.
As far as playing ability is concerned I think South Africa are the best balanced side but they seem to lack self-belief.
If forced to have an interest I think I’d go for the South Africans.

March 3, 2011 at 12:05 #343078But, Nathan, it seems that county cricket is dying and very few seem to care.
The four day, as it is now, is the best form of the game in my opinion but because there are not enough people around like us it is going to die out.
It is not economic.
The suits that run the game only see the bottom line and as far as the county game goes that is all in red.
There are too many sides playing in the County Championship, there are not enough good players around, the talent is diluted and there are too many easy runs and easy wickets about.
Regionalisation wasn’t a popular happening in Welsh rugby and it hasn’t really worked, too many supporters alienated, too many ‘foreign’ players. the gates are not great and the national side is not noticeably stronger but I think the experiment of regionalising ‘county’ cricket might be worth a try.
Whatever, something needs doing.

March 3, 2011 at 20:59 #343153England bowlers are just too tired. No lack of effort. We won ashes and should have come home for a rest. Bloody unbelievable what they have done phisically.
March 6, 2011 at 20:40 #343530Don’t entirely buy the tired and jaded argument. I haven’t heard Australians complaining, nor for that matter the Pakistanis and New Zealanders, who also played a Test/T20/ODI series at the same time as England.
Memorable day’s cricket on Wednesday, very entertaining. O’Brien’s reply to Anderson’s feeble sledging (by smashing him out of the ground) was particularly memorable.
Then again, excellent scrap by England today. Enjoying the World Cup for a change.
Regionalisation of domestic cricket would be worth a try I think, perhaps as another tier between county and international. Big change is coming either way, the current county set up is unsustainable and more significantly, the counties are falling out amongst themselves.
March 12, 2011 at 03:08 #344279Well done the Bengal Tigers. I thought they’d bottled it – but no!
England look knackered

Good post, completely agree. Cricket seems to attract administrators who are totally useless, and have no idea about the sport’s standing in sporting world.
As far as County cricket stands, it’s no longer the 1950’s. Very few people are interested in the sport – which considering it’s meant to be our main summer sport, is quite sad.
The ECB have sold the game down the river to Sky – some form of it needs to be on ‘normal’ TV. What kind of sport has it’s teams/clubs relying on ‘hand-outs’ just so they can stay in business? Ridiculous!!
I don’t want to see any county fold – but thay have to remain somehow viable – if that means ‘part-time’ players, so be it. There just isn’t the money in County cricket for it to remain sustainable – which in my opinion, is a shocking indictment of sport in the UK.
Bring back a 50 over Sunday League, ditch the 40 over comp, and have dedicated days for the County Championship, e;g Mon-Thur, also, promote the CC more, in the long summer evenings, have the final session from 6-8pm – get more people into the grounds.
There is more to cricket than The Ashes – take the current World Cup – be honest – how may people are really interested? Hardly captured the public’s attention, has it? Forgive my doom and gloom, but I really believe cricket in this country is soon to be in trouble.
As for the World Cup – I hope India don’t win it – not what the sport needs; the ICC run the sport for their benefit anyway, and take no notice of the emerging nations. With this attitude, it will never be a truly world game.
Rant over…….March 25, 2011 at 19:02 #347215The game has survived for over 100 years without people being interested. Yes alot of counties are in dire straights financially and something needs to be done but without knowing all the facts and figures are not the likes of big football teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool been struggling with debts recently despite all the supporters and sky hand outs.
All the more reason to get your dosh on Somerset to win everything this season. While by the sound of things all these counties haven’t got 2 pennies or supporters to rub together, Somerset continue to go from strength to strength on and off the pitch……

March 25, 2011 at 23:16 #347250Agree hope about Somerset – I hope they do win the CC this year. They deserved it last year, but Lancashire put up no fight against Notts in both games, and Notts undeservedly ‘won’ the Title on bonus points.
Somerset seem a well run club, as do Hampshire, who have an enlightened chairman who seems to see the bigger picture.
April 4, 2011 at 16:08 #348629I see there is a special report on sky sports news this evening at 7.30 about the financial crisis in county cricket.
