Did Grandouet get up ok?
They just showed a replay and the horse got up straight away and ran after the field. Barry Geraghty gave a comment after the race and nothing was said about an injury so I guess that means he is all right.
Seemed to be raced off his feet for the first half, but had plenty in the tank when it counted. I wanted Zarkandar to win, but I can see now that he has not got the pace for 2m over hurdles. Perhaps a world hurdle prospect or time to try fences?

Looks like he is enjoying his second career!

It is a myth to think horses are reared and killed in humane conditions. Every year thousands of unwanted horses are taken from Britain by live transport. Many horses are crammed into unsuitable lorries and driven across Europe for days without ever being let out the van. They are starved of water and food and sometimes horses will die on the way and the carcass only removed at the destination.
In principle there is nothing wrong with eating horse meant. As a horse owner I realise it is hypocritical to refuse to eat horsemeat but to happily eat other animals. Nevertheless, my horse is a pet and many people would refuse to eat dog or cat meat for the same reasons.
Horses are not machines, and they cannot be galloped into the group all year round just so that punters get a good run for their money. The amount of training involved in getting a horse 100% fit involves a lot of wear and tear on the legs which increases the risk of injury. Unless horses are given the chance over a number of months and races to develop gradually to top fitness they will have a shorter career overall.
I cannot seem to avoid the conclusion that the principle of age discrimination means that the only way an employer can avoid liability is to allow older employees to keep working until they die. How on earth does an employer get rid of old employees without the implication of age discrimination?
This sort of "social engineering" rhetoric is becoming increasingly trendy nowadays. I heard they were going to ban Frosties the other day in order to target obesity. If only it were that simple!
In a way the cross country ride that comprises part of the Three day Eventing competition is something akin to horse racing. Although each horse goes round alone they are racing around the countryside against the clock over various obstacles in order to complete the course without time penalties. Imagine the Cheltenham XC Race without the other horses. This is as close as racing is going to get to the Olympics.

How about this?

Already played that…
Last time I checked no animal had received an Olympic medal as part of a team or otherwise. The Olympics are about human achievement and horse racing is predominantly about equine achievement. It is completely distinguishable from show jumping, eventing and dressage by virtue of the fact in those three sports the rider has a massively important role in both the training of the horse and in riding the horse in order to decide the results. Racehorses will gallop anyway, whereas in the three Olympic equestrian discipline’s horses are trained to complete manoeuvres/actions they would not otherwise have done/learned to do.
Well, that’s a point but I don’t see a world of difference between equestrian events and racing and if some insist there is, so what?
You probably wouldn’t get the Frankel’s competing but you don’t get the best footballers or boxers either.
I think it would be massively supported and connections would love to win an Olympic Gold – the crowds would also go mad for it! It probably won’t happen as there’s too many Jeremiahs in racing to get a campaign off the ground, but imagine what a fantastic advert for the sport it would be…
Mike
Yes but Mike you miss my main point. Horse racing is primarily about the horse’s achievement whereas other equestrian sports involve the rider’s skill/ability to a much greater extent. If you let horse racing in and give out gold medals to horses then the Olympics is no longer about human achievement.
Who would win the medals, horses? Not really fair giving the medal to the rider as all he does is sit on top and time the run.
A medal each to horse, owner, trainer and jockey. Just like any team sport at the Olympics, really.

December 31, 2012 at 09:44 in reply to: RSPCA & Grant Kill Thousands of Healthy Animals every year #424860Unfortunately they know how to get attention and how to get emotive supporters to donate money so that the office staff can have a raise and the managers a bigger pension…
Clearly it requires true genius to realise that an amateur (part-time) sports person is going to fall short of a professional (full time) sports person, otherwise there would not be so much airtime dedicated to this ridiculous debate.
SWC does as good a job as many professionals on a horse that does not jump well.
To suggest that his FATHER sack his own son and replace him with a professional is to miss the point entirely. Maybe, just maybe, RWC gains as much if not far more enjoyment from witnessing a beloved son winning racing’s blue riband than he does owning a horse that wins the blue riband with some other jockey.
The whole Long Run project is about Sam and RWC together, and not simply about RWC being racehorse owner.
Even though that was before my time I do recognise that music and it is very good. I guess it is a generational thing, I love the current music and will always associate racing with that and resent any change like you did when they changed to my music!
