I’d have Freddie parrot faced Davis for the commentary

I listen to more podcasts than I watch ITV racing (and do not have Racing TV, though I do enjoy the replays, which include paddock comments pre-race, on the Sporting Life website).

There are so many podcasts and preview shows on YouTube, but they all include people I enjoy listening to and people I do not enjoy listening to.

I’d love a podcast hosted by Ross Brierly, with Rory Delargy, Tom Segal and Dan Barber as guests – that’s my Dream Team podcast. I also like listening to Keith Melrose and Paul Kealy. Of course tipsters are never going to tip every winner (who is) but I like how they explain what they like about a horse.

I do like Kevin Blake, though he can be holier than thou a lot.

Darren McGrath has recently done some Final Furlong, and was very good to listen to. But I endure Emmet Kennedy rather than enjoy him.

For TV, I like that Scottish guy who does the pre-race stuff in the north and Scotland on Racing TV, no idea of his name though. Also Neesom, enjoy him too.

For race commentator, Machin, Hoiles or Topham, for me.

Would love to hear some of the posters in here doing a podcast, just a chat about their involvement in racing similar to the Betting People series of podcasts. That would be enjoyable.

Disclaimer: I’m only interested in jumps and don’t listen or watch flat.

What has happened to Jim Mcgrath?. I thought he was as good a pundit as we’ve seen on TV

Interesting choices, QF. I cannot have either Brierley or Delargy because I have an aversion to people who use “er” and “um” every few seconds, but each to their own.

I think you mean Gordon Brown. Not to be confused with the former Prime Minister.

    …and Stanley Unwin as presenter

Is James Willoughby still around? Used to enjoy his ever-decreasing circles

He seems to have disappeared from RTV.

On the subject of presenters, where is Nick Luck? He was absent from RTV’s coverage of Aintree and has not been on Luck on Sunday for a few weeks.

    Dream team:

Presenter – Nick Luck but only if he stops his habit of talking non stop for 60 seconds at the end of a race before letting anyone else get a word in.

Paddock & interviews – Lydia Hislop. Best in the business.

Form – Jonathan Neesom & Steve Mellish. Informative and entertaining.

Ex jockey – Ruby Walsh is superb. Jason Weaver for the flat.

Female – Jane Mangan is an up and coming star.

Ken Pitterson should have a bigger role than the 30 seconds he gets before big races.

Commentator – Stewart Machin with Simon Holt covering the 2nd meeting.

    Nightmare team

    Presenter – Francesca Cumani

Paddock & interviews – Alice Plunkett. I’m sure she’s a really nice person but constantly telling everyone how wonderful they are really irritates me.

Ex jockey – John Francome. Every post race analysis consisted of him telling us what a wonderful ride the winning jockey gave whilst constantly refusing to criticise any other riders.

    Commentator – Peter O’Hehir and Ian Bartlett(snooze)

    Plunkett.

Either a “great big boy or lad”, very repetitive but given the nature of that role they have employed her for she is probably very limited to what she can say.

It does not really need someone in the paddock highlighting what could be said in the studio or anywhere elsewhere on camera.

Willoughby pops up on the Nick Luck podcast most weeks to cover the TRC World rankings.

As for Lucky himself clocking up more air miles then Rishi Sunak!

Presenter: There is only one lord and master, and its Cormack15.

Form: A Rob North / Gingertipster dream team, even without the Timeform sub.

Betting: Its got to be the peerless Mike. Anything unfavourable is cashed out for no loss 10 yards before the winning post, any winner has inflated odds. Get in!

Paddock: Triptych makes some interesting observations regarding this. They all look terrific, are brown or grey, and have four legs, to a layman like me.

Commentator: Ian Davies has the form in the bag here with his Dictator commentary.

A wonderful line up – which just gets better with each successive appointment – I’d far rather work for TTC than ITV, anyway.

The sunny disposition of Tony Ennis presenting from a subterranean hovel handing over to man at the track Peter Naughton with Leonna Mayor adding gravitas. It would be the intention to use Tim Peters for the commentaries if he’s not too busy, but Ennis or a feed from the track as required. A concise summary of the day’s action from Dave Yates.

Thanks Gladiateur, am pleased to see the thread has got back on track since my last post! And thanks for your comments too Ian; I’ve clearly not learned anything about the correct way to post on an internet forum if someone is describing me as courteous ;-)

Anyway, my dream team would be some mix of:
Hosts – Ed Chamberlin, Alice Plunkett. Yes, I know this will bring some people out in a cold sweat.
    Interviews/roving reporter – Lydia Hislop
Analysis – Kevin Blake, Ruby Walsh
Ex-jockeys – John Francome, Luke Harvey, Richard Pitman
Commentator – Richard Hoiles, Simon Holt
Betting ring – John McCririck (from the days before he became a reality TV caricature)

Once upon a time I’d have said Clare Balding was the ideal host, but she seems to have distanced herself from racing in recent years. ITV has certainly been trying out a lot of new female presenters in the past year. So many in fact that it’s difficult for them to make much of an impression individually. I’ve been quite impressed by Jane Mangan though, and Megan Nicholls has some promise too.

I also think ITV using Chris Hughes to try and broaden their appeal is a good move. It’s a shame he seems to have been turned into a comedy act with Oli Bell, as I think he would be capable of more.

Clare Balding probably does not want to be seen as being too close to racing. The London media crowd she moves in would not like it.

Agree about Jane Mangan. She provides good insight and is not bland. I commented during Cheltenham that she was not worried about ruffling a few feathers, even sharply disagreeing with Nick Luck during RTV’s Cheltenham coverage.

Although she made a shocking error at Leopardstown last week. When a filly named Emily Dickinson was being put into the stalls, she asked Gary O’Brien if he knew who Emily Dickinson was. When O’Brien replied he did not, Jane confidently assured him she was the suffragette who threw herself in front of the King’s horse in the Derby.

She was a poet. The suffragette was named Emily Davison. Should have paid more attention at school, Jane! ;-)
