This isn’t about Frankel, Black Caviar or Camelot (certainly not after the St. Leger).
But which horse has been YOUR personal banker? Either the one that has made you the most profit, or the one that has been most consistent and reliable in terms of giving you a return.
Here’s my top three:
3rd – Moonstone Magic gave me my biggest win at 40/1 at Leicester back in April but to be honest it was a lucky punt. However, she has to go on the list for my longest odds win.
2nd – Izzi Top has been a profitable horse for me and has run some great races. Plus I am a huge fan of the Gosden / Buick partnership.
1st – For sheer regular running, reliability, and consistent profit my horse of the flat season is PRUSSIAN. A great handicapper who you can always rely on for a gutsy performance.

MY horse is Frankel. Easy peasy.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"

At 10/1 to win the Queen Anne by 10 lengths or more, indeed why not Frankel!

Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
September 25, 2012 at 11:49 #414153Rumh 2 races from a mark of 90, lovely.
September 25, 2012 at 11:55 #414155I think this is another gambling thread for people who gamble.
Personally, my horses of the year have been the fifty three odd thousand that haven’t cost me a single penny. Well Frankel cost me train fares and a ticket at York but I was very OK with that.
September 25, 2012 at 12:15 #414156As I don’t do betting, my answer takes a very different approach. Yes, I do have my favourites among the bigger names, but my horses of the year are the also rans, the no hopers, and the horses who just ‘make up the numbers’. These must be the real fun horses for their owners ( who certainly aren’t in the game for the profit), and I’m full of admiration for them all. Well done you guys.

I meant that for me this particular post isn’t about Frankel etc. There didn’t seem much point asking the question, "Who is the horse of the year?" unless you are interested in reading 100 posts saying "Frankel". I thought it might be interesting for people to post about a particular horse or two that they have followed, for whatever reason, and why they like it.
The reasons can be financial or otherwise. Mine are financial because having a small bet is what makes racing more interesting for me. And I only bet small for the record, and am capable of enjoying racing without having a bet.
I always start a season off with a significant number of horses that I am keeping an eye out for. Often they may not be the superstars but I get enjoyment from following their fortunes. Some of them have flopped badly on a regular basis, some have won sporadically. But out of all of them Prussian has been the one who has stood out of the ones I’ve been following.
I’m not disputing for a second that Frankel is THE horse of the year, but let’s face it he doesn’t race under the same sorts of conditions that Prussian, or thousands of other horses face on a regular basis. Frankel goes out and runs his races and wins them with ease. Yes that’s because he’s the best by a country mile, but he doesn’t have to run in a big field handicap in conditions that don’t suit etc. That’s why Prussian is my personal favourite from this flat season.
September 25, 2012 at 17:21 #414184I’m another that struggles to look past Frankel when assessing my ‘horse of the year’, but if I were pushed to give another I’d say I was mightily impressed with Aussie challenger Ortensia.
It must take quite a feat of training to travel a horse across an entire hemisphere and take on good horses in their own back yard, and beat them. I think Ortensia’s team can be rightly proud of her campaign these past few months.

September 25, 2012 at 18:27 #414190Danedream, by a long way, for coming back and winning the King George and for that alone…
one instance where ”nothing more to prove” is valid, I think…
September 25, 2012 at 18:55 #414192Famous Name
Has become one of my favourite horses (from the enjoyment of seeing him run, rather than betting). He finally wins a G2, and if you want a certain short price banker he is it. Even if I didn’t find any other winners on the day I could always relay on him.
Perhaps his sister will be horse of the year next year(?)

Oh S*it thats put the mockers on him!
September 26, 2012 at 12:47 #414242Premio Loco continuing to do his best at a high level and Snow Fairy bouncing back from injury in style will do for me.
Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
September 26, 2012 at 12:55 #414243Red Tanber running up a sequence in Scotland. Very moderate over hurdles, his athletic jumping made all the difference going over fences. He was outclassed at Cheltenham but had done enough to earn the Mactaggarts their day out.

September 26, 2012 at 14:17 #414248Obviously my horse of the year would’ve been Frankel

Bar the SHC superstar, my horse of the year would have to be the ill-fated Brindisi Breeze! To advance from a £2,599 Maiden Hurdle win to a very gutsy victory (over red-hot favourite Boston Bob) in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham three months later was nothing short of brilliant…

September 26, 2012 at 22:09 #414274For making me actually cry watching a horse race: Kauto. Frankel’s wins have been so mechanical I have felt at times emotionless. It’s the moments where a horse wins one pure heart rather than exceptional talent that make it all worthwhile for me.
