Gingertipster under a false guise of Steve Smith claims that he can name 40 horses that was in the Grand National between the years of 1980 and 1990 whether it won, fell, refused, pulled up etc chosen at random.

February 19, 2022 at 23:04 #1583923Please don’t mention the 1985 Grand National – I had 20/1 West Tip ante-post, 25/1 Mr Snugfit win only, and the pair in a combination tricast with Corbiere and Greasepaint.
I could never “hate” a horse, but I’m not Last Suspect’s biggest fan.
I was just getting over the flu too – that tail-swishing monster, with Hywel Davies defying 5lb overweight to boot, gave me a relapse!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"February 20, 2022 at 23:00 #1584050Great find! Success was never in the slightest doubt.
I was amused that one of the panellists said that anyone who was able to succeed would be a multi-millionaire. He seemed to be confusing the ability to predict future race results with the ability to remember past ones.
February 21, 2022 at 10:08 #1584082I seem to recall another contestant had recognition of owners colours as his party piece/challenge. “Random” silks were revealed and he had to correctly name the registered owner I think. I’ll see if I can find any coverage/mention of that anywhere unless anyone already has it to hand.
February 21, 2022 at 10:37 #1584083Ah, You Bet. Used to love that along with Gladiators. Back before all Saturday evening ITV shows were either Cowell ‘talent’ contests or Ant and Dec.
Speaking of game shows, there must have been a few Masterminds who had racing as a specialist subject over the years.
February 22, 2022 at 10:05 #1584276Yes Richard, I remember a “contender” answering questions on the Derby as the questions were set by John Randall of the Racing Post. This would have been 15-20 years ago. From what I remember they didn’t do very well – if you pick something that’s been happening for over 200 years you give the questioner plenty of scope to defeat you. Nowadays you get people putting date ranges in e.g The History of The Derby in the 21st Century.
There might have also been a Grand National “expert” more recently who suffered a similar fate.
February 22, 2022 at 14:04 #1584299There was a very short lived “Sports Mastermind” hosted by Des Lynam. I think it only ran for one series. I remember someone answering questions on the Champion Hurdle.
February 25, 2022 at 20:24 #1584724This brings back memories, I remember watching that guy on You Bet when it was on TV and him saying he backed Otter Way.

John Randall won £500,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire back in the year 2000.
At that time there was a qualifying round to reduce the field from 100 to the 10 contestants required for the show. Someone from WWTBAM would call you at home to ask a question. The totally random question Randall got was, ‘What is the distance of the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe ‘.
