The best of nineteen suits most of the top players & Ronnie would certainly be in that category. Higgins is probably the best player on the circuit over longer formats & is very much at home in Sheffield, but I still maintain for value, the best two bets available at present are Mark Selby & Shaun Murphy, who are both comfortable with longer formats & both have won a tournament this season.

April 15, 2010 at 00:05 #290348This is one of my favourite events of the year.
I will go for the same two players as last year, they are Ali Carter and Mark Selby. Carter has reached the final before so knows what’s required but he has got a tough 1st round against Jamie Cope. That match could go either way but if Carter gets through he can go all the way.
Mark Selby is for me a future world champion but will it be this year. He was very unlucky last year to come up against John Higgins in the match of the championship. This year he could meet Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarters and if Selby can keep it close he can get under Ronnie’s skin like he has in the past. Having said that Ronnie has got a very hard draw who will have to be at the top of his game from the start.
John Higgins has to be a possible winner but I think it was Hendry in 95/96 to be the last back to back winner. The other possible winners for me are Neil Robertson and Mark Allen. Robertson is a very exciting player who can beat anyone on his day and Allen is one of those players who reserves his best for the longer matches at the Crucible.
April 15, 2010 at 09:04 #290375Pat, the Carter – Cope match does look the pick of the first round. Alot depends on the early frames as Cope is a confidence player and if Carter gets a quick lead he could very well steamroll him but if Cope is on form it could well go the distance, I’ve had a few quid on the correct score 10-9 to
Cope

Selby reminds me a bit of the late Paul Hunter….very good match player…..excels in events like the masters but is just a little short on the big stage. He may well win a world one day,but i dont think its cut and dried…..My bets this year are Ronnie,Allen and a little ew on Marco Fu as well at massive odds.

I would certainly agree with you regarding Mark Selby, but not on Ali Carter, despite being a recent runner up in the China Open. I think the longer formats catch a few players out & Carter comes into that category.
Best of Luck

April 16, 2010 at 11:57 #290593Tomorrow is the big day & one of my favourite events on the
sporting calendar, ofcourse it’s the World Snooker Championships.I hope the guys from across the water are all available, although
most of them have digs in England & shouldn’t be affected.Looking at the latest odds, I think there is still good value with
Mark Selby
&
Shaun Murphy
at slightly longer odds. Both like longer
formats & they’ve been playing quite well recently in tournaments & are
both well accustomed to the Crucible.Mark
April 18, 2010 at 17:21 #291026I think it’s safe to say Cope is being steamrolled.
With Somerset losing the cricket aswell today and my return to work tomorrow I’ll be going to bed with a bit of a headache.

At least Selby won through.

Your spot on about your earlier comments regarding Cope. He is very much a confidence player & if his head starts to go down he’s doomed. He has to overcome this problem & his manager should be looking at this, as the guy has ability, but his temperament is questionable. He’s not the only one that spits the dummy, there are at least three top players, who seem to lose interest when they don’t get their own way – O’Sullivan, Maguire, Ding Junhui all come to mind.

April 20, 2010 at 04:50 #291276DING looks a safe money buying bet @ 1.11
to beat Pettman in their match which starts at 10am
April 20, 2010 at 14:01 #291331Still early days but I’m obviously happy that Carter and Selby are still in but Cope is in serious danger of never realising his true potential as he faces another season outside the top 16.
Ronnie and Ding look as if they are playing well but hopefully Williams will give Ronnie more of a match in round 2.

Selby is playing well & I can see him winning the title, although I hope not. Carter’s had a good season, but will probably fall short & find one to good. As for Cope, I think he has to conquer the demons inside his head, he has good ability but his head goes down far to quick.

If you won the bet then, I would normally say well done but risking £100 to win £11 is crazy, even if you thought Pettman was a pub player & the both of us could give him a game.
Not to long ago I laid a horse you probaly know well called
Zaynar
for £250. Not because I thought he wouldn’t win, but I thought the lay odds of 1.07 were incredible & there was one other horse that would test him & so it proved. I risked £17.50 to win £250 – 4.5% commission.

April 22, 2010 at 08:42 #291639Murphy looked in super form last night. Won 8 Frames on the bounce. I backed him at 20/1 and think he has a great chance. O’Sullivan’s attitude doesn’t seem right and he has to be on top form if he is going to win. So I’d be layer of him at the minute.

Couldn’t agree with you more & he gave Greene false hope in the first frame. My two value recommendations before the tournament started were Selby & Murphy.
My checklist for them ticked the three boxes –
Crucible Experience
Recent Form
Longer Formats (Mental Stamina)Both of these players have got all three at present & that is why the value odds were with those two & a reason to oppose O’Sullivan & Higgins.

April 23, 2010 at 20:48 #292057Hi Guys,
Some good tips been posted pre championships on this thread. personally i am on Allen @ 16-1 which is good at the minute. Cant help but feel he is peaking too soon though.
Just thought I’d through in a few other bets to consider. Some playeare great breakbuilders such as hendry, selby, o’sullivan, higgins, allen. Spot these players, then whenever they clash get on the number of centuries in the match. For the weekend Selby v Hendry…its 12-1 for 6 Centuries, 28-1 for 7 Centuries and 40-1 for 8 plus centuries. a few quid on all 3 with a cover all stakes bet on 5 centuries @ 13-2 will do for me.
so 1pt 5 centuries @ 13-2 = 6.5pts
2pts 6 centuries @ 12-1 = 24pts
2pts 7 centuries @ 28-1 = 56pts
2.5pts 8+ centuries @ 40-1 = 100pts.I reckon there will be 5 centuries minimum in this match…hoping for 7 or 8 though!
April 24, 2010 at 15:52 #292232Hi Doug, nice of you to pop in, I think you’ve got a good idea concerning the centuries bet in the Selby vs Hendry match so I’m going to copy you only I’m being greedy and going for 6, 7 and +8 centuries hopefully Selby will get the lot of them aswell, although with you being Scottish i expect you will be cheering on Hendry.
