No real complaints there. Wasn’t much more Spencer could have done and as last time, she just took a while to get going, the trouble being this time instead of 3 lengths off the pace she was 8 lengths off it. It was a better ride than that Zaham got. Although he was always up against it after stumbling, Hills just sat wide, neither trying to get cover or try and get on the pace and that horses chance was effectively over after 3f.
Sympathies for anyone who backed Philatelist too. He’d surely have been in the shake up with a clear run, though it could be a blessing in disguise as he’s likely to be able to go back into handicaps off 94.
I was on Philatelist, but that is just Lingfield for you!
Re Spencer, a lot of people on the betfair forum were saying he should have moved closer earlier in the race. The problem with that is that she would almost certainly have had to circle the field – you have to have loads and loads in hand if you are to win a race around here if you are 5 wide all the way….
I don’t reckon Silver Pivotal is a Lingfield horse, but she is easily going to be group class when they get her to a nice galloping turf track.
March 15, 2008 at 21:34 #151655I had a fiver on Hattan at 22, hah-hah, he-he, ho-ho, they’re coming to take me away away, ha-ha-he-he, ho-ho! And thanks to a certain newspaper tipster, I also had a fiver on Himalayan Trail at 21, ha-ha-he-he-ho-ho,they’re coming to take me away, away, away… Eat dust, numpties!
March 15, 2008 at 21:53 #151662Thanks Sailing Shoes: that seems plausible.
But I remember Equitrack and front runners could win on that surface. I remember horses trained by the much missed Bill O Gorman (e.g. Nucleon) who would blast out and make all around the same undulations.
Is it not a surface issue too? And aren’t jockeys making their own self-fulfilling prophecy? (If they believe rabbits can’t win, they don’t front run and ergo, contribute to a draggy pace very few horses can win off)

Went yesterday for the first time to get a feel for the course configuration. I agree and you are absolutely correct in your assessment.
For the record I was on Philatelist and Red Meloney

Again I don’t know for certain, but I think the bend into the straight might have been made even tighter since the Polytrack went down, which IMO makes it much more difficult for horses that have already attempted to quicken before the bend to then re-kick in the straight.
It is certainly not impossible to front-run, but I think lots of things contribute to it being very difficult.
March 16, 2008 at 13:11 #151773I’m not sure it’s as straightforward as that. In this same race back in 2005, John Egan made all on Eccentric with a well-timed ride and Kabeer did the same thing later in the day. I think the belief that you can’t make all here has become self-fulfilling.
March 16, 2008 at 13:25 #151777I quite liked the look of paco boy yesterday, think he’s up to winning a few more flat races this season.
Dont know what to make of clive brittain saying that hattan will be at his best this year and next because he is from same family as warsaan, have always had a bit of a soft spot for hattan since he won that derby trial at chester, as did think he looked a very nice horse but he hasn’t really produced anything of note and dont often bet him and indeed didnt bet him yesterday. Warsaan did improve right enough in his older days, may keep an eye on hattan when he is largely priced.
March 16, 2008 at 13:58 #151784Paco Boy did look very impressive – Tasdeer had a four length head start when they kicked for home and he still picked him up. Already looks better than his brother Fuel Cell.
i’m much more annoyed about the last, excusez moi’s jockey not only gave the field half a dozen lengths at the gates, when finishing fast he had to try quite hard to not finish in the place pos – that rides got to be worth a ban for not doing everything to get the best possible finishing pos
That would have gone nicely with his ban for his effort (or perceived lack of) on Emshabb in the opening maiden.
March 16, 2008 at 23:28 #151954I am no expert on American racing, but have watched enough to be fairly certain that none contain the undualtions that there are at Lingfield. Southwell & Wolves can suit a front runner, but the very nature of Lingfields speedy downhill run makes it difficult to front run and save enough for the run

Keeping in mind Nad Al Sheba was built to the same spec as Belomont Park (apart from the coat-hanger shape of course) I think any horse that has ran the stretch there never forgets and has an edge here on any of the A/W courses.April 5, 2008 at 16:30 #156185What an absolutely magnificent ride by Neil Pollard!
The unsung journeyman outrode the Champions and several other high profile jockeys as if they were, as the Americans say, bugboys. And in doing so, showed you can make all at Lingfield at a good tempo and hold on; especially as there have been several farcical "jockeys" races there today.
Well done.
