The meeting soon to be introduced euphemistically on ATR as being a “competitive card”.

To think some cruel people used to joke about how ATR stood for All The Rubbish.

I love Brighton racecourse – I’d go there often if someone else owned it, individual admission was reasonable (£10 maximum, access all areas, for today wouldn’t be a bargain) and they didn’t have 100% Class 6 cards.

I like it too. Great location and views. It has been a lucky track for me over the years as well.

The racing has always been on the modest side but there did used to be a few reasonable quality races at the venue. Today is just dire.

I’m now quite excited to see how Ness Ta Rah does today. Who needs the Derby?!

How about Ascot… Then Rubbish? 🤔

True – but remember Ascot was on RUK for a few years!

To be fair, she’s hammered Ocean Wilde (OR 40!) and that once won a race!

Good point Ian. Ocean Wilde’s initial form figures were similarly dire to Ness Ta Rah’s, and seem to have returned to that level. But his win proves there’s always hope!

Ness Ta Rah is treated very badly by whoever writes the in running comments for RTV’s results page. It simply says “outpaced”.

Nothing else! No mention of beating a horse rated over 20 lbs higher. The injustice!

I sense a dedicated, ongoing thread to Ness Ta Rah brewing……..!

There’s an argument for saying she’s run to 44 today – if only she could actually race off 18 in a Handicap (if only they went down to about Class 10) somewhere!

This is a filly on an upward curve!

She’s only been beaten about seven lengths!

If this rate of improvement is maintained race on race all year she’s winning the Prix De L’Abbaye in October!

Presumably the short lived ‘Regional Racing’ of a few years back had meetings with a lower ‘highest rating’.

Looking through today’s card (highest rating: 76) made me think of this thread.

CAS said that there used to be a couple of decent races at Brighton, but I’m struggling to think of them. 🤷‍♂️

Who was the best horse ever to run at Brighton? I’m drawing a blank here.

Cacoethes won a 1m2f Graduation Stakes contest there in 1989.

Cacoethes made his 3yo debut in the Prince of Wales Graduation Stakes on 24 April and was made the 5/6 favourite against nine opponents.

He took the lead before half-way and accelerated away in the last quarter mile to win “very easily” by seven lengths from Dolpour, a colt who later that year was beaten only a head when finishing second in the Champion Stakes.

Brighton is an ideal venue for a Derby trial – having walked both courses in their entirety I can attest to that.

Thanks, Chezza. I’d forgotten that he won at Brighton; as you say, Dolpour was a good horse, too.

Always wondered why there wasn’t a Derby trial at Brighton; given that ARC own Lingfield as well, there probably won’t ever be one now.
