Going back to the original question, the reason why presenters often go OTT is simple: it is their job to hype up the sport and its star performers.
The powers that be are always trying to attract newcomers to the sport and anyone watching racing for the first time may well be swayed by the eulogies of those behind the microphones and decide to take an interest in racing as a result. Those who have followed events for a bit longer will know that everything which is said ought to be taken with a pinch of salt but newcomers won’t have any historical context into which to place horses’ performances and are consequently more susceptible to such exaggerations.

Don’t think so, racing was still on ITV then I think.
June 3, 2006 at 18:50 #72793Channel 4 launched in November 1982. I don’t believe the racing switched to the channel instantly – World Of Sport still limped on until 1985 – but others here may be better placed to confirm or contradict that.

June 3, 2006 at 19:03 #72794Sorry Prufrock. Didn’t know I was expected to produce an essay. Study his form – not the Arima Kinen in which he was over the top and poorly ridden.<br>Then let me know if you disagree.;)

What, the best 2yo from 2005 goes on to finish 2nd in the Guineas and win the Derby? Maybe pigs will fly tomorrow!
On a different subject that I don’t think has been mentioned, I thought that Noddies Way far from disgraced himself for a 2000-1 shot and pulled his way up quite handy for a long time before obviously being outclassed in the straight. Must have been a great day out for connections.

Yes. Robinson looked suitably unimpressed at the comparison
