Interest died away? Proper teams are left, and Spain are beginning to purr, despite Del Bosque setting up in auto-defense mode due to the fitness of Torres and Iniesta.
Spain brush aside Paraguay and, imo, Brazil brush aside Holland..Lucio has been outstanding at the back for the samba men, and their relentless pressing and retention of possession will restrict and hurt the dutch – who are reliant on Robben for a threat – in equal measure.
Uruguay can overcome Ghana, and Germany will cause the Argies some real problems, with Maradona’s midfield not looking the strongest..
July 1, 2010 at 12:47 #304009Its between germany and brazil, both teams have had the hardest run so far and have made it look like they’vre only exceptional world class teams in this. Cant see germany losing 2 argentina or spain. They just look to good. If holland even get a goal against brazil i’ll be surprised. Ghana uruguay will be a great game and although i’ll be cheering ghana, could go either way. Spain paraguay is likely 2 be pretty dull, and although i’d love paraguay 2 win, i think spain will go 1 goal up and pass the ball around until the final whistle goes.
July 1, 2010 at 14:26 #304024Germany far, far from being a world cup final team imho..
Defense, which doesn’t look great, will face a major test against Argentina, and I can’t see how they could keep a clean sheet against D Villa and the rest.

Oh dear Bucksy! I being distantly related to King Juan Carlos of Spain fears the Germans more than any other team, including Brazil. The Germans are the best bet of the tournament to Blitz the Argies, they are a mechanical unit who work and run as one,the Argies south American flair will be crushed by the machine known as Germany! If Spain can beat them they can beat the Samba dancing Brazilians who have no Rivelinho or Jairzinho and are quite capable of conceding!Villa must score another against Paraguay before things start to toughen up!
July 1, 2010 at 16:53 #304041Think you’ve been taken in by the demolition of a dreadful England team..
but we’ll see, I don’t see them as a danger to Spain personally..
July 2, 2010 at 21:56 #304243Well it’s not Brazil…very disappointed with that.

I think the Germans can beat the Argies – it’s up for grabs this cup!

Tbh, APK, It’s your modesty that dazzles me!
July 3, 2010 at 16:35 #304398Actually, I do want to purr a bit about ze Germans.
I thought they were simply sublime against the Argies today.
Every player in the unit performed magnificently. Typified by Klose’s tracking-back and closing down of the oppo as soon as he lost the ball…let alone his goals.
I did not fancy Germany at all pre-tournament but having witnessed their last two performances I think they are favs – esp if the Spaniards get dumped by paraguay (unlikely but ya never know).
The way they absorbed the pressure and then counter- attacked to make it 4-0 was an utter masterclass.
Q) Where was Maradonna in their hour of need?

July 3, 2010 at 16:47 #304405Very, very impressed with Germany again.
Maybe a lot of us didn’t quite give them the credit they deserved when they beat us, instead we were focussing on how poor we thought we was rather than how good they were?
Interesting to see two European teams in Germany and Holland who are doing very well, when not that many people were talking them up before. Holland especially are a team when I was growing up who were always strong favourite’s to do well in the major tournament’s only to flatter to decieve and let everyone down.
Not sure what the expectations of those two were from their own country? Maybe Parlo…in about 3 days when the hangover wears off could enlighten us? Well done Parlo by the way..bet you’re absolutely buzzing!
Both these teams though seem to be young, fresh and fearless and certainly deserve their place in the last 4 unlike those cheating barstewards from Uruguay!
July 3, 2010 at 17:21 #304411Well, you can imagine that all the nation is very proud in this very moment.

In the morning I said to my friend, who is German but is married and lives in the Netherlands (I live very close to the borders to Belgium / the Netherlands): "I’m very optimistic, the GER-team will beat the ARG-team decisively. The match vs. ENG was not a lucky chance and I was happy that the goal not given to ENG didn’t decide the match. This is just to confirm now".
This GER-team is like that great team of 1972 – they are more Brazilian than the BRA-team ever was in their best days.
You know, there is an open account with Spain since the final of the Euro 2008 – but in the form of the last 2 matches this GER-team can beat any other team, and the Spain-team was not really convincing so far.
So I hope for another good match on Wednesday and a final NED vs. GER, with the winner …. yes, you are right!

By the way: this GER-team consists of players, whose parents came to Germany from 8 different countries / cultures. Just this deserves the championship-title for that team!
Was Klose’s first goal offside? I think, he was a bit lucky in that moment.
Finally, I was disappointed that the Ghana-team didn’t get through yesterday night.
Kind regards!
July 3, 2010 at 18:07 #304416I haven’t had a bet on football since the lace was removed from the brown leather balls but Mrs CS has about half a dozen bets a year on football and is very shrewd, her last bet was Ross Country to beat Celtic in the semis.
Much to my amazement she’s just had a bet on Germany to win outright, who, may I add, are far from her favourite team so the tip is obvious. Her reasoning is they are the only team to dismiss the minnows without breaking sweat.
Who does your missus fancy for the July Cup at Newmarket, CS?

July 8, 2010 at 10:35 #305399England are a thoroughly average International team. I’d be stunned if they weren’t knocked out early.
Spain. Back. Collect.
Nearly there

Well played Bucksy, the best team won!My 16/1 Spain/villa ended up paying a miserly 3/1,that missed penalty did come back to haunt us!
July 11, 2010 at 22:41 #306021hola chief, well done with the bet though, close to the full glory! Yeah that pen miss has cost a fair few people a lotta money I’d think!! Shame Holland were dreadful in the main, although Spain should have scored more goals through the tourny really…but happy days I’m buzzing!! Hope you are too
