After a long absence, tomorrow sees the return of Martin Chuzzlewit to the track. A first-time visor is applied and his last run at Chester on rather desperate ground gives him every chance here.

A 20 runner handicap is hardly an event to back anything with surety but at around 11 or 12/1, a Stoute trained 3yo is a hopeful selection.

In recent days there have been a fair few Stoute horses going off short in handicaps and getting stuffed, for example:-

    Sir John Hawkwood 2/1

    Ladyship 2/1

    Commend 5/4

    Grandiloquent 15/8

I never rule anything out but backers of the above had Great Expectations before falling on Hard Times ;)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Beacause of losing heavily on the above I had to tell my youngest daughter that Santa Claus wouldn’t be visiting this year and that we couldn’t afford a tree.

I explained all we’d be able to do this year was exchange cards and have a chicken dinner instead of turkey.

"This is going to be a real Bleak House" she said and all I could reply is "But at least it’s A Christmas, Carol".

Not sure how i’m going to tell my son Oliver…..

Not quite as good as the exchange between Ronald Fraser and Simon Cadell in "Life without George" but some worthy efforts.

Fraser "Harold David Copperfield Chambers at your service"

Cadell "Your mother liked Dickens then?"

Fraser "I dont think so, I’m an only child."

Martin Chuzzlewit wouldn’t be one I’d put my trust in. He’s acts as lead horse or some of his more talented inmates and is well used to getting his ass kicked. I’d be worried he takes the habit to the racecourse

I’d can’t see he visor making much difference to him, as he looks very genuine. No doubt he’ll be ridden up with the pace again as he’s what you’d call slow and lacks the tactical speed to be ridden any other way.

This looks a much more competitive race than Chester and despite SMS ability to improve horses after a lay of he’ll need all his magic and more to get a win out of this slow coach.

If I end up with egg on my face so be it but you have to say it the way you see it.

The horse that had to be Stoute’s banker Tales of Grimm doesn’t run. He’s been catching the eye at home apparently with some sterling work and kicked Tazahum into touch recently.

He’s left Tazahum in the race and he must have a squeak but not because he’s the better horse. I’m sure the idea is to get a Group win into Sir Robert Ogden’s Tales of Grimm it looks like he’ll have his chance and an easier opportunity at Windsor tomorrow night in the Group 3

That’s where I’m putting my cash so why don’t ya all join in the fan and we’ll blame EF if it goes wrong, as he did start this thread

Unlucky EF every change just beat for speed, Hope you backed him EW.. I thought Willie Wagtail would have won had Fallon kept a straighter course on the winner.

Martin Chuzzlewit is probably the horse to take out of today’s race provided his temperament holds. For me he’s got plenty of speed and travelled well in to the race, looked the winner as he struck the front. Beaten by hold up horses and did much the best of the prominent runners. Possibly went off too quickly and MC is (imo) better than his finishing position suggests. Therefore, may well be attractively handicapped once reasessed.

Don’t give up on him EF.

Certainly looked to be more suited to York than Chester.

In fact, you could say it was a tale of two cit…(yeah, yeah)

You’ve been reading too much Dickens

    As I said up above

"No doubt he’ll be ridden up with the pace again as he’s what you’d call slow and lacks the tactical speed to be ridden any other way"

It seems you disagree with me and with SMS who had him ridden exactly the way I predicted.

What this horse needs and will get is a tougher test of stamina…mark my words

I thought Willie Wag Tail was going to win. I backed him the time before and he got no run after William Buick decided to try for a miracle run behind a wall of horses. I backed him this time in singles and a double with Ortensia. Sometimes these hold up horses look unluckier than they really are and he will probably go off way shorter than he ought to be next time. Caution advised!!

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I don’t think we disagree all that much Fist. With Martin Chuzzlewit’s temperament it may well be he’ll always be suited by being ridden up with/near the pace. Also highly likely to stay further; as it was his staying power that enabled him to remain towards the front, doing better than the other horses up there from the start.

But also (before that staying power kicked in) he quickened ahead of horses who hadn’t (at that stage) reached the end of their tether. Therefore, in my opinion MC has enough pace to win over this trip (when again racing prominently) providing the over all pace isn’t quite as strong as here, ie favours prominent runners a little more.

Sorry, I didn’t see Willie Wag Tail was running today or I would have posted a reminder on Lays and Plays. As I had suspected he went off short today at Yarmouth (10/11) and could finish only third of six runners.

Duffman had a bad feeling about that!!

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
