I must have visited a different London recently then because there were people of all ages and multiple faiths/nationalities all over the place enjoying themselves all of whom were perfectly safe. Quite a lot of Union Flags flying too (before all this hanging cheap crap halfway up lamp posts started) and they looked great because they were quality flags that were properly hung.
Of course here are rough parts of London, just as there are in any large city on the planet, but you probably wouldn’t take your adult relatives there either.
October 12, 2025 at 13:26 #1741905One of the many ironies is that the flags being put up all over the place are usually made in China.
Another of my favourites is that if St George were to attempt to enter England now, he’d be labelled an illegal immigrant by the very same people who wave his flag so proudly on their marches.
Idiots.
October 12, 2025 at 13:28 #1741906No Glad scared(for the grandkids) of all the vile crap being shouted and screeched at on the underground. I am no snowflake brought up in Canning Town, family of dock workers but I am not putting my grand kids through that shyte. But as I have said each to there own and you along with Richard and others find it ok
Right lets get back to my knitting
October 12, 2025 at 14:02 #1741909Thanks for the reply, nwalton.
Many years ago, when I was a lad, it was considered improper to swear or use foul language if women and/or children were present. Do you not believe that the almost complete abandonment of such basic good manners is symptomatic of modern society?
October 12, 2025 at 14:17 #1741910yes mate as said came from a very rough area of London we had to fight work on the docks or play football to survive. My late dad a docker ran loan clubs out of pubs for the locals so he had to know how to handle himself carry all that money about with my uncle. Anyway i digress, was always told respect elders and women and even now at 66 and my sons 43,39 drop down into the road to let ladies the eldery or younger girls pass. Now I feel even some of my age have lost there way with manners (I dont just blame the young) if my kids (or their children)do not respect the groups i mention they’d get a thick ear as my old man would say.
I am no Einstein but respect does not take a genius to hand it outSorry for long answer mate
October 12, 2025 at 14:46 #1741916I still open doors for others and stand aside to let others through a open door way , I’ll be honest I rarely see others do this

I believe we all agree that standards of civility and general politeness have slipped over recent decades. How much can this decline be attributed to the “me first” doctrine of neoliberalism, as espoused by Thatcher, Reagan, et al?
October 12, 2025 at 16:29 #1741927I realise we’ve strayed wildly off topic but such is the nature of forums (fora?) and I agree with much of what has been raised.
I will say on London that I do accept that I’m essentially coming from the view of a tourist and I’m almost as much of one there as I am in Paris or Rome. In my experience it’s actually the people who don’t live or even go there that generally express the most negative opinions, obviously there are exceptions.
I’m very much from the school of ‘manners cost nothing’ as you all clearly are too. Everyone should spend some time in a customer facing job I think. It’s telling and saddening that a lot of customer service workers wear body cams these days.
October 12, 2025 at 16:45 #1741933I am actually bringing us back on topic, step by step. 😉
October 12, 2025 at 18:12 #1741940I’ve long lived by the maxim “all I expect from Joe Public is common courtesy and a smile”
This simple wish for my fellow folk has declined, as an increasing number seem so wrapped up in their own little worlds when out and about; be that being glued to a smartphone, cocooned in headphones, or a rather blank ‘1000 yard stare’ demeanour: essentially a preoccupation with self and disinterest in those milling about them
While the doctrine of ‘me first’ neo-liberalism has undoubtedly seeped its way into the general national conciousness I’m of the opinion that Social Media is more the culprit, along with the interminable brain-dead TV broadcast on a myriad channels. The worship of those false gods ‘celebrities’ doesn’t help either. Being bombarded by ‘wealth porn’ provided by – some would say – bodies beautiful results in little more than sad resentment ‘why can’t I be like that’ and hence an erosion of self worth and contentment
October 12, 2025 at 18:20 #1741943” I’m the reflection of perfection , the number one selection ” this was the claim of wrestler Superstar Billy Graham in the 70s , an outlandish , cartoonish character created for the crazy world of wrestling …. It’s now the aim of every talentless z lister

October 19, 2025 at 16:59 #1742525As predicted, didn’t take Netanyahu long to resume the attacks.
October 19, 2025 at 17:07 #1742528How does Trump act now ?

October 19, 2025 at 19:27 #1742535Sod all. Trump said bombing might need to restart if hamas don’t behave themselves which they haven’t. All that fanfare and lauding of Trump less than a week ago and now the suffering could continue as much needed aid seems to have slowed also. I knew peace wouldn’t last but thought it would be longer than 6 days.
October 20, 2025 at 00:25 #1742553Maybe, just maybe Hamas broke the ceasefire.
This place is full of anti-Jewish sentiment.
Some of you just cant wait to bash Israel, can you?
