I am just glad neither fell or got brought down and that we saw a finish.
Apropos of which… it will be noted that of all the Wilson beasts, only Fustrien Du Paon was any better than in the last trio for a significant part of the race, and even then only until halfway. A relief.

March 14, 2008 at 22:40 #151267OH ive got it maybe ime a mind reader but something tells me i know your job, a not very funny commedian? NOT….
Actually, I work with the less fortunate members of society – helping them to learn the basics of the English language. As always, however, I do try to bear in mind that for every tick there’s a tock.
March 14, 2008 at 22:45 #151272BLA BLA CONSULTANT LOL………………………………………………
March 14, 2008 at 22:46 #151273I cannot believe some of what’s been written on….
and as far as Neptune Collonges holding the form down, well, 2-3 years ago when the Nicholls camp thought Kauto was an out-and-out two-miler all the talk there was of Neptune Collonges as their potential future 3m champion, indeed many at Ditcheat were talking of him going for the Gold Cup in his novice year before he’d even jumped a fence in public, and now someone on here has called him a handicapper!!!!
God some of you have poor memories.Nope, no sign of mentioning hurdling there, even a bit about "before he’d even jumped a fence in public". May be you think racing in France does not count.
God some people have poor memories.
Or should that be selective?

Value Is EverythingMarch 14, 2008 at 22:56 #151284just watched the race again – pure class – made the hair on the back of my neck stand out after having seen it in the flesh. It was a demolition job – a jumping galloping staying chaser – seeing horses like that perform like that is why I like national hunt racing, isnt that why we all do ? … not interested in anything else
Havent seen any serious errors on the rerun – only one minor one so no real excuses in my opinion – infact Denman pulversied the opposition. If it had been sofer i think he would have won further. I didnt back him – had a fun bet instead and just enjoyed the race.
If you are not impressed by that they i suggest you visit specsavers. Neptune Collenges is a good young improving horse (look how easily he won his last race) and might be a threat if he liked cheltenham a bit more. Wasnt a tactical race on fast ground, no hard luck stories, no bad falls.
Denman is a tank and it was a privilage to see him today
March 14, 2008 at 22:56 #151286BLA BLA CONSULTANT LOL
You’re improving, give you that, since you managed to spell consultant correctly. Now just manage to sort out the difference between upper and lower case text and we’ll be getting somewhere.
I do hope that you haven’t been too selfish and taken all the fancy prices about NC in next year’s Gold Cup?
March 14, 2008 at 23:19 #151305If only life were black & white.
Turning things on their head, Ginge, are you saying that KS ran 2 stones below his best and, as a consequence, this was just about as bad a Gold Cup as we’re ever likely to see?
No Scallywag,
I think Denman’s was an excellant Gold Cup, one of the best I have seen. Personally I rate it above Best Mate and last years when Kauto Star won it. Just that Kauto ran below form, his Gold Cup winning performance is not his best form. How much is hard to quantify as I believe no horse this year actually ran to form.At a first guess, I would say:
Neptunes Collonges improved 5lbs to 170.
Denman improved to 181
Kauto Star on 170 means he ran about a stone below his best but curiously above what I would give last years winning performance as.Value Is EverythingMarch 14, 2008 at 23:41 #151322Ginge,
To my eyes that was an awesome performance by Denman.
I’m still waiting for someone to tell me when a Gold Cup in recent years has been dominated in such a fashion; that certainly wasn’t the case last year.
For those who need to quantify the performance, the Gold Cup this year must pose problems but that does not, necessarily detract from the level of form shown by Denman. As I said in a previous post, with KS it’s been a case of same-old, same-old in terms of the horses that he’s been beating of late and, unfortunately for him today, the deck of cards was slightly different.

March 14, 2008 at 23:56 #151337Kicking King’s or Best Mate’s second for a start scally.
Neither of them would’ve beaten Kauto though let alone Denman today.
March 14, 2008 at 23:57 #151339At a first guess, I would say:
Neptunes Collonges improved 5lbs to 170.
Denman improved to 181
Kauto Star on 170 means he ran about a stone below his best but curiously above what I would give last years winning performance as.NC surely ran to at least 175, his official rating was 172 leading into the race and he has bags of scope for improvement.
March 14, 2008 at 23:57 #151340Think the problem I had with the result was I was hoping to see both horses at their best. We did not see that, but you are right, Denman’s performance was awsome. The best in the Gold Cup since…
Trying to remember a better one Master Oats? But his rating was questionable. Very soft ground etc.
Burrough Lill Lad? Was not an avid racing fan until just after his time.
So although at the time I was disappointed, I think we do have to give great credit to Denman. Even though I played down the hype beforehand, think it might have got to me.
Had Kauto been at his best I think it would have been very tight between the pair.

Correct. But both dominated their Gold Cup fields in similarly imperious fashion, which is what the question asked.
March 15, 2008 at 00:07 #151343Have just been flicking through my history of the gold cup book, which ends in 2000, and realised what races we’ve had in the 8 years since it was written…a triple winner, Kauto Star, and now Denman..not bad!
March 15, 2008 at 00:10 #151344I had a big bet on Kicking King when he won the Gold Cup but his Gold Cup can not be considered as good as his King George. Take The Stand was not that good.
Best Mate for all he won it three times, never beat anything that good.
Commanche Court, Truckers Tavern, Harbour Pilot, Sir Rembrandt. Hardly great chasers. The more I think about it the more I can appreciate Denman’s performance. Just a shame Kauto Star could not have jumped better and given him a race.
Have connections said yet whether any of the first three will race again this season? I want to see Denman or Neptunes Collonges frank the form.

Value Is EverythingMarch 15, 2008 at 00:13 #151346Hope they do – the nh season is slipping away from me much too fast…
March 15, 2008 at 00:15 #151347David,
Suggest you watch the replays of both those races.
