It’s not all doom and gloom..yet!

Well done to all the British teams this week in Europe, some decent results though some games await a return leg but Spurs, Bolton, Everton and Rangers all progressed, Arsenal (0-0), Man Utd (1-1), Liverpool (2-0 up) and Chelsea (0-0) hold every chance of joining them.
In the Uefa cup it gets harder from here on in.

Fiorentina v Everton
Spurs v PSV
Bolton v Sporting Lisbon
Rangers v Werder BremenCeltic however have it all to do in the Champions league to overturn a 3-2 deficit against Barcelona in the Nou Camp, and yes I still class Celtic as British even though their fans don’t.

Aberdeen, sadly, were thumped by Bayern Munich 7-3 on agg and go out
February 22, 2008 at 11:55 #145467Re: Celtic v Barcelona.
I was at the match. I have attended European nights at Celtic Park many times over the decades. The atmosphere is always electric – the best of any ground in Europe on these occasions – i.e. according to visiting fans and players. I wouldn’t disagree.
I have now seen Barcelona play at Celtic Park on three different occasions in the last few years. Celtic did manage to beat them 1-0 in the Uefa Cup when Martin O’Neill was the manager. However, Barcelona have won the last two encounters – 1-3 (when Henrik Larsson scored for Barca ) & the other evening – 2-3. In fact, they managed to beat Celtic’s fantastic unbeaten sequence in the Champions League, and indeed, were the last team to win at Celtic Park in that competition.
Quite simply, they are a class apart. An absolute joy to behold. I would go as far to say that this display of football from the Catalan giants was the finest I have ever witnessed from any visiting side to Celtic Park. It was simply breath taking at times. Lionel Messi is a wonderful player. You don’t really get a true idea of his brilliance until you watch him in the flesh. Likewise Iniesta, Puyol, Ronaldhino and Thierry Henry, who seems to have re-captured something approaching the form he displayed with Arsenal.
I honestly believe they can win the Champions League this year. Not because of what they did to Celtic, but with what I saw them do with a football. Simply stunning. You can take that as written that Celtic haven’t a prayer in the return leg.

February 22, 2008 at 15:06 #145535A few points here…
I kept Celtic apart from other teams in my thread because they and Aberdeen were the only two teams that lost, my dig at them being non British was justified because thats what most of their fans wish they were.
Fair comment from Himself but it’s funny how when Celtic lose to a very good side in Barcelona they are praised by the press and fans alike but when Rangers frustrated them and drew 0-0 at Ibrox in the champions league this campaign Rangers were slated for their tactics that lead to players such as Messi moaning about it. (you see where I’m coming from?)
To Davidbrady (I know he’ll look in) – I’ve not stooped low with my signature, what I’m doing is making Kwai (avg 16 posts a day) aware how badly Celtic fans behave when he had a go at Rangers fans for being the nasty ones (simple as that).
I will change my signature again when I feel the time is right.
TRUTH HURTS , so I take it my signature is getting the message across in the correct context.

You know me too well Jim!!!
Regarding your link, I think it’s sad for anybody (be they Celtic or Rangers or even Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, or Jew) to dedicate themselves to making any one group of people look bad, as the owner of that site clearly has (this is not a dig at you BTW)
You could have merely posted the link on the relevant thread rather than splaying it across the entire forum.
To be honest, I don’t really follow Celtic at all and I certainly don’t look for their result every week.
Life’s too short to be worrying about stuff like this.
February 22, 2008 at 19:16 #145621Fair points David and I tend to agree it’s not nice atall but I didn’t start this religious/bad fans thing, I did however feel it was right to point out and even the argument up of who the real bad fans are. (I’m not saying Rangers fans are angels but I had to open some eyes).
I don’t know who owns that site but it’s a certainty that he’s a Rangers man and probably only getting the message across like myself as this almost goes unnoticed in the press up here (one rule for one and one for another), there are plenty of football fans all around Britain even the world that behave badly but some people just like to put the blame on the big bad boys of Rangers FC for everyone’s troubles.
As for life being too short – that I agree with but football is very passionate in Glasgow probably more so than anywhere in the world but nobody outside Glasgow will see it as only passion as they’ll want to tar it with religious bigotry which is a part of it but isn’t the full story, if the bigotry one day goes away (and it probably won’t for various reasons) both clubs will still be the most passionate set of fans world wide, you’ve got to be involved to understand it.
February 22, 2008 at 20:47 #145639The reality is that both Celtic and Rangers have fans whose attitudes and behaviour is appalling. Celtic were the first of the pair to really adress it in a meaningful way but Rangers have recently made real strides in that area.
Quote from Jim – ‘Rangers frustrated them and drew 0-0 at Ibrox in the champions league this campaign Rangers were slated for their tactics that lead to players such as Messi moaning about it’
Rangers result against Barcelona was a good one and I don’t recall them being ‘slated’ apart from by Messi who was obviously ‘at it’. Celtic’s result was creditable as Barcelona appeared to be much more up for it against Celtic , which may have had something to do with the competition now having reached the knockout stage where tactics tend to differ.
(The Daylight Cup is at the same stage but I’m afraid I appear to have an even harder task than Celtic, with an 18 point deficit to overcome. And that against a Cowdenbeather.)
February 22, 2008 at 20:58 #145641
Corm, I’m 26 points behind in the Daylight Cup but I’ll be giving it a go to make the score a bit more respectable.
On the Barcelona scenario – you are probably correct regarding the different stage in tournament but I’d go along the lines of Celtic’s tactics were wrong and Barcelona wanted Celtic to play openly so they could get in behind them, it worked as Celtic were never in the game even though the scoreline may suggest otherwise. There are stats on the official champions league website if interested.
ps. the media DID slate Rangers for their tactics against Barcelona at Ibrox, and even to this day on various Celtic forums some fans are actually saying Celtics 3-2 defeat was a better result than Rangers’ 0-0 draw all becuase Celtic "had a go" –
you really couldn’t make it up.April 10, 2008 at 22:17 #157333Guess who’s still representing Britain in the Uefa Cup

even I’m beginning to get a bit excited now.

April 11, 2008 at 07:05 #157351Good luck to Rangers.

April 14, 2008 at 08:42 #157728Rangers at bottom of hygiene league
who would eat here 5 star my ass
SIR Sean Connery is among a host of celebrities who have enjoyed VIP hospitality over the years at the home of Glasgow Rangers.
But 007, not to mention thousands of paying fans, would doubtless be more than a little shaken and stirred to learn that the club was shown the yellow card by food hygiene officials.Scotland on Sunday can reveal that public health inspectors found beetles and flies in kitchens at Ibrox Stadium.
The discovery of insects in cooking and food storage areas was one of a catalogue of hygiene breaches unearthed in an inspection, which took place 18 months ago but has only now been made public.
Rangers said last night they had fixed the problem completely within three weeks of the report.
One kitchen, which was infested with sewage flies, was adjacent to the club’s prestigious Thornton Suite, which hosts champagne receptions and five-course meals.
Well-heeled VIP fans spend up to £5,460 a season to reserve a table in the executive hospitality area next to the manager’s office.
Rotting food and a bucket of stagnant water were also discovered in meal preparation areas. The inspectors reported:
• Dermestes beetles in a Members’ Lounge kitchen store;
• Filter flies in both the Thornton Suite and Argyle Suite kitchens;
• "Putrefying food matter" in the Members’ Lounge kitchen store;
• A bucket of dirty water in the Members’ Lounge kitchen;
• Condensation from the ceiling dripping onto food in the walk-in freezer in the main kitchen;
• Defective dishwashers, filthy ventilation grilles and grease filters, out-of-date marmalade, loose ceiling panels, uncovered ice cream, sugar and flour being stored, broken plasterwork and flaking paint in the chairman’s kitchen.
The report also ordered the club to remove a disused and obsolete fish fridge from the main kitchen, to subject other food preparation areas to a "deep clean before use" and to repair missing grouting from kitchen floor tiles.
It also demanded that the populations of flies and beetles be eradicated and states: "It is recommended that access to the kitchens be limited to food handlers only."
The results of the inspection have been put into the public domain by the Environmental Protection Services department of Glasgow City Council.
Corporate hospitality is a huge money-spinner for the SPL leaders.
Rangers operates a host of restaurants, bars, lounges and executive boxes in the stadium, with prices ranging from £90 for a match-day table in the Symon Lounge to more than £5,400 for a season-long package at the plush Thornton Suite and Club Deck Boxes.
The club’s portfolio describes its hospitality facilities as "unbeatable". It states: "Ibrox hospitality is about more than just watching football in style. Visits from Rangers legends and current first-team players are part of the experience, plus tours of the famous Trophy Room."
The blue-carpeted Thornton Suite, where flies were found in the kitchen, is billed as the ultimate in match-day luxury. "The Suite symbolises the heritage that has made Rangers one of the most celebrated clubs in the world. Surrounded by some of Ibrox’s most famous rooms, guests experience first-hand the unique atmosphere.
"Guests enter via the main door, exclusive to VIPs and players, and proceed via the marble staircase to a champagne reception before enjoying a five-course meal in luxurious surroundings."
The club boasts that the Members’ Lounge, where beetles and rotting food were found in the kitchen and in a store, "will make an impression on any guest".
Sir Sean, perhaps the best-known Rangers fan and a close friend of club chairman David Murray, has received VIP hospitality at Ibrox on several occasions. Comedian Andy Cameron and current Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist have hosted match-day receptions for fans at the stadium.
According to one council pest control expert, Dermestes, or larder, beetles – which are black or brown and can grow to a third of an inch long and live for a year – cause considerable problems in kitchens.
He said: "They feed on almost any material that is rich in protein and attack meats, cheese, fish and dried foods."
Makes you proud Eh??
April 14, 2008 at 09:42 #157731Serves them right imo the only reason you should go the match is to watch a game of football not to eat.
April 14, 2008 at 16:40 #157770Very good point there Danny but Rangers like to show some class in all departments, here is the latest news on the above remarks.
taken from the Rangers website..
"FOLLOWING dated inaccurate reports in today’s media, Rangers would like to give assurances that the standard of hygiene in the Club’s hospitality facilities is extremely high.
Eighteen months ago representatives from Glasgow City Council’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) visited Ibrox Stadium as part of a routine inspection and within their report noted a small number of matters which had to be addressed’.
The Club – who subcontracts its catering operation to Azure – immediately addressed these minor issues to the EPA’s satisfaction.
A further routine inspection by the EPA took place at Ibrox as recently as Friday 28 March 2008 and once again no significant areas of concern were highlighted.
Indeed Rangers have been classified as category C for inspection purposes which is an excellent grade for a food operation of our size – and the Council have recently confirmed they are happy with the hygiene practices currently adopted."
I would ALSO like to add this :-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibrox_Stadium
For a stadium to achieve a 5 star status, it must meet all requirements outlined by the awarding football authority. Some of which are, a minimum of 50,000 seats, a certain size of playing surface, first rate home and away dressing rooms, safe entry to the stadium and pitch for officials and teams, a certain criteria for flood-lighting, modern efficient public address systems and stadium surveillance systems controlled via a control room, first rate media facilities and VIP seating.
Ibrox stadium has a 5 star rating awarded by UEFA for meeting rigorous standards.
April 14, 2008 at 17:40 #157774**** all that pi*sh, Jimbo. Have you seen the state of the site clock? Still on GM-*******-T!
Should you not be ranting about that, rather than displaying this kind of lucid counter-argument about foodstuffs and kitchen hygiene??
